My bf and I had the same problem. I told my Dr. She trimmed them without question. He feels them occasionally. But the thing I'm worried about is I just had a period 2 weeks ago after not having one for 2 months. And now I'm cramping again like I'm going to start and some light bleeding. I normally have him check the strings and um really good about doing it every month but I just checked them and it feels weird like I can feel more than the threads. My daughter is 9 months old and we don't want another baby any time soon. Any suggestions?

Hi I only just got mine in, and I waited the two days to have intercourse and then afew more days just to be sure. Then, the very next morning it came out. Wow. This was not a fun experience and I dont think I'm going to get another. I might just do the rod in my arm. I didn't even have my Mirena a week and it came out! besides the risks sound very scary anyway now that I read them all. I'd say just try a different birth control you don't have to monitor daily. Like the rod, it may not last as long as Mirena but it won't disapear into your uterus or poke your partner! ;)

I have had the mirana for 11 months now an I have the problem with it poking my boyfriend as well. But I have also had the problem of I have been bleeding since I got it put in, abnormal pains and it has caused asists on my ovieres. They put me on the birth control pill to balance out the mirana and my hormones, iron pill to help with how much of a blood loss I have been threw, and multi vitamins to help keep me from getting sick with all of this going on. I get into the doctors office an I tell him I'm hurt they take a look and say everything looks okay then they say see you in a couple months.  I have had nothing but problems.>;)

Have them keep the strings long, don't cut them short.  If they are left longer, they tend to come out of your cervix and curve upwards against your cervix and uterus, so the ends are pointing upwards.  If you cut it short (it's not actually "string", it's made out of a type of plastic, which is stiff and sharp when cut) the ends of the "string" will stick straight out of your cervix, creating  "arrows" in the direct line of fire of your man's member.  His tip or side of his member will run into the ends straight on.  Ask them to leave them long when it's inserted, you don't want them hanging out like a tampon, but long enough to remain flexible so they'll curve upwards, not point straight out because they're short.  Good luck!

I have to say, I have had the same issue just recently - I have a new partner, have had the IUD for about 3 years, and have never had an issue until this new guy came along. He is a bit larger than 'average', I don't know if that would be part of the problem. He said he could feel it, the 4th time we had sex. Never mentioned the other times, and he only noticed it in a certain position (from behind - sorry if that is TMI!). I went to the doctor's yesterday, to have them 'cut' the strings, as I have read many things that would / could solve the problem. She wouldn't do it though - said it may make it worse, since they are basically like fishing wire, cutting them would literally make them 'stick out', and could stab him worse. That the 'strings' are supposed to soften. and 'wrap'. That the strings could have just shifted over the years, and could be moved by me (or him). She moved them for me, but couldn't say if they would stay where she put them. It was very frustrating - as many of you have stated, this is a great form of birth control, but seems to have many disadvantages. Any advice from anyone? Should I have my doc cut them, even though she advises against it? I don't want him to be in pain!

I had my Mirena IUD for almost 2 years after having my son. While having the Mirena in my husband also complained about being poked by the strings. I mentioned this to my doctor and he suggested trimming the strings. Since I didn't see a problem I let him trim the strings. Even after having them trimmed my husband still complained of being poked. Also i noticed after having them trimmed that I was constantly being poked by them as well. Me and my husband decided that we would like to have another child so I had the Mirena taken out in December of 2011. Since having the Mirena removed I've only had two periods. Th first one I got was 11 months after having the mirena removed (November 2012). I only got the period because my doctor prescribed me medication to "Jump Star my period" as he called it. It took maybe 5 rounds of these pills before I got my first period. I had do appointment with my doctor in January where he told me that I was not ovulating and that there was a very high chance that no might now be infertile. Where as before having my son the first time me and my husband tried I got pregnant. So I just want to know if anyone has ever had this problem after having the Mirena taken out and if this is even normal? I'm stressed to the max trying to figure this out and why it happened. The medication my doctor proscribed me isn't working and he keeps telling me it will hake time. As I do understand that my question is HOW MUCH TIME should I give it before I try something else or move on to some other doctor or look into infertility doctors. It's still not ovulating and still not having regular periods without taking many different rounds of pills over the period do months on top of months. I'm just looking for an explanation on this problem or issue if anyone knows anything and could let me know that would be greatly appreciated.

I think a lot of the questions on this blog can be answered by this site:

I did a lot of research before deciding to go with the Mirena. I spoke to two separate women's specialists about the whole process and everything they told me is replicated on the site so I think it is fairly reliable. It addresses general information, possible side effects, how to tell if the IUD has slipped, and other concerns. I found the section on "IUD maintenance" to be especially useful.

Also as far as men sensing the strings, I've read most often that trimming is suggested but my gynecologist made a good point and suggested simply tucking them up with a finger. Imagine the difference between the points of the ends of the strings and the rounded dullness of the bent side of the strings- cutting the strings will not make the points duller but bending the strings to the side will prevent the tips of the strings, which are fairly stiff, from stabbing the penis. Also to address a potential concern, bending the strings like this will not alter the effectiveness of the device or make it harder to remove/ more likely to migrate so its a perfectly fine way to address the issue.

Best of luck to everyone!
