Hi Live,

Yes, the home tests can be inaccurate.  They are likely to read "false negative" when you test early.

When was your period due last month?  When did you test?  Since your period is more than a month late, retest.  Use your first morning urine.  It is more concentrated and more likely to show a positive.

False negatives are common, false positives are not.

Remember too, you're young.  It is not uncommon to have irregular periods.

Okay so i can test again at any time? I dont have to wait until my next period?

It was due the week of May 5th. It had just finished when we had sex.

I know it can be irregular for some people but i got mine when i was 11 and its always been the same except when i first got on the pill a year and a half ago. Do you think it can it randomly change like that?

Thank you for your help.

Hi Live,

Which period did you miss?  June?  You need to be clear of when things occurred.

OK, your last period was the first week of May and you had sex just after it finished, so 8-9 days later.

This would likely be near the peak of your fertility.  It would be just before you ovulate and any sperm from your boyfriend can remain viable for about 5 days.

Yes, you can retest now.  Use your first morning urine as it is more concentrated and likely to indicate pregnancy earlier.

If you period has been regular for several years, it is unlikely, not impossible, that you skipped one.

Yes i missed the period that was supposed to start June 6.

I had my period May 5. Had sex May 13/14. Missed my Period June 6. Took a test June 11 and got negative.

So i'll do it again tomorrow morning. Thanks for your input.

Thanks. Im just curious but how soon after you get pregnant can it be caught on a test?

There is no one answer to that.

Pregnancy tests look for a specific hormone, hCG.  It's made by the developing fetus.  The level of hCG increases rapidly.  It depends upon how fast, and how sensitive the test is.  Blood or urine, they look for the same marker.

Remember too, you are not "instantly" pregnant.  It can take several days for it to occur, then for implantation to happen.

Some new tests claim a week before you're due.  The only problem is that they are likely to have many more "false" negatives than testing when you're due.

If you have the option, the blood test is the most likely to detect the hormone first, then you can watch the levels rise.

Hope it helps.
