HI. I had a neuroma removed from the top of the foot beginning Nov 06. Had a bunion removed end Nov 06 on the other foot. Then beginning of Dec 06 the bunion removed on the neuroma foot. All have healed. I have a problem with Scar tissue from the neuroma and it feels like a lump in the pad of the foot. I tried laser therapy(4times) interferential(electrical therapy) 8 times. It still feels the same. I am running with orthodics but still have problems with walking of hard surfaces bare feet or sockings on. The Bunions healed well and have no problems with them. Can anyone suggest help with that scar tissue problem from the neuroma. Thanks.

I am recovering from surgery for Plantar Fasciotomy and am now contemplating surgery for Morton's Neuroma (obtained from using crutches after the PF surgery). I can say that massage has done wonders for the scar tissue I developed from the PF surgery. A friend recommended a Bodywork Therapist to me (an additional license that a message therapist can obtain) and the direct massage for 30 min twice a week has removed almost all of the scar tissue. Now, I face the decision about surgery for the neuroma. The experiences I read on this website make it harder to decide as it looks sooo risky. I am already in orthotics and am off of my foot completely for about two weeks now, have had two injections and not much difference.

Hi - I just thought I would pipe in and let you know about my experience with Neuromas as well.

I was training for a half marathon and developed excruciating pain in my foot, so I eventually went to a podiatrist. He immediately diagnosed it as a neuroma, and suggested several things: orthotics, wide shoes, alcohol injections. Well, I had about 10 of these horrible, painful alcohol injections directly into the nerve. It left my toes and underside of my foot numb, but the neuroma pain came back after a couple of months. He had told me about the surgery, but did not sound all that confident, so I went to a more well-known podiatrist in the state for a second opinion.

He said the alcohol injections probably did more harm than good (left scar tissue in my foot), and he recommended surgery for me. I had the surgery about 6 months ago - with the incision on the top of my foot. I can definitely relate to some of the pain/sensations you have all mentioned. I had those "live wire" sensations on the bottom of my foot for a while. But I actually had a foot massage one day, and it's like the pain was rubbed out - it's very minimal now...definitely bearable. While I still have some random phantom pains, I must say that the surgery has been a HUGE IMPROVEMENT to my foot...any pain that I am enduring now is so minimal compared to the pain I was feeling before the surgery that I would definitely recommend it to those with unbearable pain.

I'm actually contemplating having a neuroma removed from the other foot now. It's not nearly as bad as my right foot was though, so I haven't yet decided if I should go ahead or wait.

Hope this is helpful to someone - and good luck to all of you experiencing neuromas. You're not alone :-)

I had my MN removed Jan. 26. I had been doing pretty well for a while. Now that I have returned to work, it seems to be getting worse. I am going to physical therapy 3x week and they think that I am getting a scar that is going down into my foot instead of coming to the surface. I have to see my Dr. Friday and decide whether to continue working and going to therapy or to quit both. I'll let you know the outcome.

I'm sorry y'all (yes, I'm a Texan) have had such bad experiences with neuroma sugery. I had the surgery 5 years ago, the neuroma was 12 mm, quite large. I credit my doctor for the successful surgery and recovery. He is very conservative and had a specific schedule for keeping the foot dry and elevated. The first 2 days after surgery, the foot could not be lower than the heart for more than 45 seconds at a time and no more than 5 times per day! Then for every 5 minutes the foot was down, it had to be elevated for 3 hours! Absolutely no weight on that foot for 11 days. My mother came and took care of me for a few days and my husband was got up in the middle of the night, to put me in the wheelchair to go to the bathroom. Stretching the scar when I did start walking on it was REAL painful for a few days. I was off work a month and even when I went back, I had to sit 90% of the time. Not allowed to drive for 2 months, nor wear regular shoes for 3 months. All that was a real drag, but there is no pain or swelling in that foot, and the scar is almost completely faded.

Im 17 and am having the MN surgery in about 2 weeks, the day after i graduate. My doctor said that he has never felt a MN as large as in someone as young as me, or even 30 years older. I've had constant pain while during my athletics throughout high and am looking forward to getting it removed. I am a little worried though after reading some of these recovery stories because 18 days after the surgery i will be working out in Glacier National Park. The hiking out there is incredible and now i am afraid that i wont be able to do much... If anyone has an suggestions to possibly get me back on my feet faster, i would appriciate the input!

hi i had my op on my left foot yesterday. i had a ankle block so this is the first day i have felt real pain. I have had foot pain for 10 months now day and night and the pain people describe after surgery seems like the pain i was getting constant all day even when i was resting. So after reading some of the horror stories about this surgery i went ahead. Your the only one so far that has had sucess so fingers crossed mine is too. Did you rest completely for 1-2 weeks keeping off the foot? My doc said to do that so if you can give me your advice that would be good?
? :-D

I am 19 and have had a problem with a neuroma for a few years. Just had an MRI on it and the doctor said i have a faily large neuroma. I play lacrosse in college and it absolutely kills when I play. After reading all of these posts im sort of reluctant to have surgery on this now. I had ACL replacement surgery last year so im not worried about having surgery or the recovery rather but how subseptible am i to more possibly worse lasting pain after this? Also how long is the recovery, my doctor said two weeks but most people here say it took them longer? I cant afford to be sidelined for much more than a few weeks. My doctor said he goes in through the top of the foot, is this typically better or worse?

Folks,

I had surgery on both feet about 2 years ago. It was a top down procedure. Prior to surgery I had about 5 years of pain. The pain started after a doctor recommended orthodoxies. They did not solve problem I was having but did leave me with neuroma's. Each morning I would get up and one foot of the other would feel like someone was running a knife through the 3rd & 4th toe. Lots of fun. During sports I would at times just fall to the ground due to the pain.

So, both feet had surgery the same day. Two years later my left foot has some very minor numbness, but can handle sports (think snow!), and I ran a 12K. The right foot continues to hurt too much. The pain appears to be growing again. It might be time to see the doc again. If the right foot felt like the left foot then life (with regards to my feet) would be great.

So, a 50/50 story.

Would I do it again? You bet. Pick you doctor very carefully, follow what appears to be unbelievable recovery with your feet in the air and the such, and get back to enjoying your life. Note, I was in my 50's when this happened.

I HAVE BEEN SEEING MY DR WEEKLY FOR 7 MONTHS. I HAD NEUROMA SURGERY 6WKS AGO AND I AM IN MORE PAIN NOW THAN EVER BEFORE. I AM SUPPOSED TO GO TOMORROW AND HAVE ANOTHER ULTRASOUND THINKING I HAVE ANOTHER NEUROMA IN THE SAME FOOT. I HATE TO HEAR ABOUT THE CONSTANT PAIN EVERYONE IS IN. I AM NO LONGER OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE SURGERY.

I had surgery for neuroma Nov 16. At this point I haven't been allowed to walk on the ball of my foot. My surgery was done on the top of my foot and so far everything is going good.( had a little infection) The third and fourth toe are numb as well as the ball of my foot. My doctor says that is to be expected since the nerve was removed.

Prior to my surgery for a right foot Morton's Neuroma I had "researched" via this blog for patient outcomes. Needless to say, I was very concerned about all the pain post surgery mentioned by patients here. Well, for me the fear of the known became greater than the fear of the unknown, so I kept my appt.. Dr. did about a 2 inch incision of top of foot between 3rd and 4th toes. Said going between toes would probably be having me back for second surgery in time. I am 57, female who heals well and maintains a positive attitude most of the time. Looking forward to getting back to yoga and long walks in the park behind my home.

I was released 4 hrs after arriving, walked into CVS to fill perscript. took my sister out to breakfast as a thank you for the ride and felt GREAT.
Upon arriving home, elevated my foot, placed on ice pack as recommended and waited for pain. 9:00 pm a very slight tingle/throb, took 1 pain pill just in case. Slept thru night without boot, felt like any other normal night of sleep. Today, forcing myself to not drive and keep foot elevated. Still no pain or pills, walk around in boot or on heal with out briefly. Dr. said no driving but I plan on keeping a short drive appt. tomorrow.

Will miss work Mon. and plan to return Tues. (1/2 hr drive) bar any unforseen events. Return to Dr. Thurs. for bandage change. I think the biggest challenge will be taking baths only and washing my hair in the sink. My sister (a nurse) reminds me to do exactly what Dr. says, I intend to do be somewhere in the middle as long as there are no complications. Well, back to watch ANOHTER movie to keep me still and foot elevated. If anyone is interested in the days ahead I'll post. Good-luck to all of you.
