Hello, I had same problem. It started with flu, we all got flu in one large office regardless flu-shots. After antibiotics, we all left with the mucus inside the back of throat. some goes away with the time and some left with the mucus forever.

The problem may cause by: the flu or the antibiotics...

No doctor can help me so far.

My husband has excess mucus in his throat at all times, and it is so distracting to everyone around him. He has seen his primary care physician, a ENT specialist, and a gastroenterologist, with no success.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Is there a test to check the PH balance in the body? Also, has anyone had problems with their ears, and if so, did treatment help this mucus condition?

We are desperate.

the first poster said that she wakes up in the morning choking..

If I were to lie back, with my head up, I would get unbearable gagging. Dentist was an absolute nightmare, I couldn't breath.

The obvious thing with the sleeping, is not to sleep on your back.

I find sleeping on the side can cause me tinitus, which happens sometimes in some positions.. So if you have that problem, I find that if I put your hands up and bend my arms 90 degrees. Like i'm doing a pullup. So my hands and head in between them make a |_|_|
And when I sleep on say the left side, I keep the left arm in that position.
Key is, sleep on the side, so you don't gag. If you have a tinitus problem then amend it as necesary.

The gagging only feels dangerous and stops you breathing, if you are on your back with your head up. I can't imagine waking up like that!!
Don't go to sleep like that.. I would not be able to get to sleep like that!

I stumbled across this thread yesterday when I was looking for answers myself. Thought I'd throw my findings here in case it could be helpful to someone.

I had the post-nasal drip, mucus, horrible gagging/choking/coughing where I couldn't cough or swallow it away... All that. I went to the doctor last week and she had me take OTC allergy medicine and prescribed an inhaler, thinking it was allergies. The inhaler helped some, but the allergy medicine did nothing.

So I kept looking around and finally found the words Laryngopharyngeal Reflux. It's acid reflux often *without* heartburn that gets into your larynx.

http://heartburn.about.com/od/gastrictractdisorders/a/whatis_LPR.htm

I started taking an OTC acid-reducer pill yesterday, and I'm already feeling better. While I still have some mucus in my throat today, I had no coughing/choking fits this morning. HUGE improvement. (I'm thinking it'll probably take a few days to clear out the mucus completely while my larynx heals from the acid irritation.)

There is constant secretion of mucus in my throat. I bring out the mucus with a lot of effort. A lot of this happens all day long, I continuously suffer pain at the back of my head, all along the lower jaw, at the back of my neck in this effort. I've taken all kinds of medication that the doctor has prescribed but no luck. He has done nasal and throat endoscopy and he tells me my throat is very clear. He said, may be I am allergic to something which i need to find out. I am suffering this since five years, now it is becoming more painful and nagging even when i go to sleep. It is becoming a CAUSE OF WORRY TO ME. If I keep my mouth open a little pain lessens but My throat gets so dry and i have to shut it.I feel like something is stretching the inside of my throat . But suddenly sometimes I feel the release of the that mucus from wherever it is hanging and I feel a great relief. I find goggling with Rexidine(Chlohexidine) does give me temporary relief. But I need permanent relief and am lookinf for a new Doctor. Please advise. Strange as it may sound, but when i sit in sinking sofas the pain acceleratest and feel the stretch of muscles at backof my throat and I have to abandon the sofa and go for hard base. What is the connection I wonder. Please Help me.

I have the same problem. Had if for two years I believe. An annoying lump in my throat that never really goes away. I'm trying to quit smoking but the problem is that symptoms get worse whenever I try which causes stress and which has me reaching for some cigarettes, so it's a vicious circle. Especially psychologically it is damaging for me as it affects my overall feeling of good health. The constant slimey feeling in my throat drives me crazy and makes me feel to be in bad condition and health. When I go and see a doctor they don't seem to take it very seriously and subscribe me some nasal spray which I could have gotten myself. I wonder if it might be chlamydia of the throat or something like that. I did take antibiotics once and it did make the mucus much lighter and runnier for a few days but antibiotics never seemed to have been strong enough to completely clear it. Maybe a resistant strain? I'm also wondering if it might be due to air conditioning at work. When I started to work at my current work place there was this girl who drew my attention because she was constantly clearing her throat and coughing up and lo and behold a few months later I'm doing the same thing. I also get night sweats which might indicate walking pneumonia? Too many options really, so I guess I'll just try to live a healthier lifestyle and stop smoking first for a longer period than the usual 1 month and see what that brings.

It could be acid reflux. I'm a singer, and have had the same problem, and was misdiagnosed with "allergies." I tried Mucinex, nasal sprays, sinus rinses, humidifiers, vaporizers, EVERYTHING. I then found out from my ENT that it was silent reflux (which is different from acid reflux, because I don't get heartburn or anything like that) and the reason I had so much mucus buildup in my throat specifically was because my body was basically trying to protect my throat from any further damage. I was prescribed Nexium and given a list of foods/beverages to avoid which include: caffeine, chocolate, citrus, tomatoes, anything spicy.. It's also important not to eat too much in one sitting, not to eat too late at night, and to chew all your food really well - as all of these can cause reflux. Also sleeping with your head slightly elevated (they make angled pillows for this, or you can put a brick or a stack of books under your mattress) can help so that during the night acid isn't coming up to reach your throat and cause damage.

Hope this helps!

I'm having the exact same problem; only difference...and im not sure if this applies to anyone else in here: is that i smoke. This gurgling only happens when i exhale deeply.

Ive taken antibiotics, mucinex, nasal spray, cold+flu meds, claritin etc....it doesnt seem to have any relation to a cold, virus or allergies and for me it seems to be chronic (it comes and goes)

hot drinks: tea, coffee, w/honey/ginseng/mint dont seem to offer anything more than extremely temporary relief.

Does anyone else experience a similar problem? It seems there a lot of us in here but everyone's situation varies slightly. I would love for this gurgling to disappear and never show its face in my body again:(

I have mucus in my throat for 21 (!!!) years. Took hundred kinds of different medications. Nothing helped, none of the hundred doctors could help me.
Lately I learned on the Internet about Hyperventilation, and I figured out I was not sick just my brain did not get enough carbon dioxide from my breath, that was a problem. Now I have to relearn how to breath correctly, it
takes long time, much patience but it works, I have to relax and practice breathing. I do it every available minute and it works and works great. Just try and do your breath out longer then breath in. Good luck

Hello everyone!

Well, I just started experiencing major symptoms, although post nasal drip and allergies have been with me my entire life.

The interesting (and kinda gross) thing that just started a couple months ago is this: I feel like the mucus is building up on the back of the throat, and then one day, for no apparent reason (not hacking or coughing), I feel a large *something* detach from the back of my throat. I have had this happen twice now. Both times it has had some mucus on it, but the weirder thing is that most of it feels like a hard piece of plastic. Not chunks like some people describe, but flat. Like 1/2" x 1". I was surprised at how hard it felt.

Immediately after that, my throat feels absolutely clear. Then of course five minutes later the process starts all over again.

Anyone know what this is? Is it just mucus that builds up for so long it hardens? I just got presribed my first spray. Wish me luck!

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Reading all of these posts sounds like there's more than one cause of this mysterious problem that doctors don't understand. The most interesting thing I have to add is that it improved significantly when i went camping. it used to improve when traveling, but not anymore. I have trouble believing this is just an alergy, but clear air helps at home too. When I was lifeguading outdoor pool i didn't have problems during the day. I have read it could be an imuno overreaction... but don't know what to do about that.

Mine has always been just in the morning. It started after I had broncitis last summer and the phlem just never quite went away. It's progressed to an all day thing that's worse at night. I found some 400mg/4hr guaffenessin that helped, in about 3 hr incriments... but it could get you through a meeting (usually). I got a neti pot and after about a week of worsened congestion the phlem turned from light yellow (darker and harder in the morning) to clear, and after some homeopathic medicine (might be helping) now it tasts funny.

when i had bronchitis i could tell that yellow mucus came down from my nose, and clear was coughed up from my lungs. I can't always tell where this comes from, just that it's annoying. I have family history of throat clearing sinus problems, but none are quite this annoying.

I hope only to add clues to the great mistery

I know this sounds gross but I now scrape my tongue morning and night and it helps clear the mucus in the back of my throat. It's been the only way I can clear it relatively easily. I still gag sometimes when I do it, much less than before thank goodness and only when I'm worse. For me it does seem allergy related. Sucking on a cough lolly also helps relieve the symptoms.

Glad I'm not alone with this horrid business.

I have been clearing my throat CONSTANTLY for over 3 years. It started right after a major cold/flu and never went away. Have had lung xray, lung function tests, ENT exams, 24 hr ph and esophageal tests for GERD, and injected allergens tests. The only thing that was found was allergic reaction to fusarium mold. But I don't think mold allergy would cause what I have. I don't have any sinus mucus and very little mucus that I can ever hack up. It doesn't seem to get any worse when I am working racking leaves, which has a lot of this kind of mold. I have tried antihistamines and they are no help. It does help a little when I do a nasal rinse, but very soon after that it comes back. This is driving me and my co-workers crazy. I may try allergy shots since I have very little left to try. I've even played around with eliminating foods (e.g., wheat and dairy) that commonly cause problems without any effect. Wife says I should see a naturopathic type doctor but I don't think that would do any good. The only other thing that I thought might have caused this is long-term use of statin drugs to control cholesterol, which I stopped taking about two years ago. It also caused me to get burning in both feet, which my doctor said probably was caused by the drug. However, he doesn't think this would cause my throat clearing problems.

I will keep reading the posts in this thread in hopes that someone will say something that rings a bell as to a possible cause or cure for my problem. Thanks to anyone who might have any more ideas about this.
