I am a mother of 3, and have breastfed all 3, all have had the same non-pooping problem at 4 months...it is nothing to worry about, the pediatrician who works out of the famous Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto told me that the breastmilk is so healthy for them that the body doesnt want to waste it! It is amazing. If your baby is formula fed that is a different story. One of my babies went up to 11 days! They were never bothered by it either... TRUST ME when they have a problem you will know about it! :-D

i have a 6 month old baby girl.. she had no problem with her poo until the doctors put her on antibiotices when she was just 4 weeks old.. since then she has had major problems with her bowel movement,, she goes up to 14 dys with no pooh.. but she passes alot of gas and she drools alot..(i think that is from that fact she is teething). is this normal for a baby to go this long without a bowel movement? she has been off the antibiotic oover 2 months now and she is still not going normal

my second baby had the same problem, he went once a week (sometimes longer), and it came out in floods. besides being a problem because it would inevitably leak out of the diaper, it is completely fine. they say breastfed babies can go for very long without having a bowel movement. my problem is now my one month old has the same problem, but he is in so much pain i want to help him to go more regularly. i know it is techincally "ok", but the poor little guy is not happy about it! and i think the majority of babies have gas, im not sure if it has anything to do with the bowel movement infrequency.

I have a 4 month old boy. He is 100% breastfed baby. At 2 month, his bowel movement changed from once every feeding to once every 5 days, then longer. The pediatrician said some baby undergoes this kind of change at 2 month age. We traveled overseas when he was 3 month, we had to give him glycerin a few times since we could not wait out for more than 9 days. When we came back, the pediatrician told us we could wait out for 14 days because he is 100% breast fed. His poo poo is not hard, more like peanut butter, he certainly pass a lot of gas at day 6 and beyond. We are waitting this time, today is day 8, nothing yet. We tried prune juice 5 ml X2 yesterday, nothing come out yet.. :'(

I'm having similar problems with my 6 1/2 month old son. It may not be a problem since he seems happy as can be. He is mainly breastfed. We began giving him a 4oz. juice bottle once a day (2 oz. juice and 2 oz. water) at about 4 months, and we started introducing solids to him just before he was 5 months old. We give him solid foods that are not known for constipating, and he only gets half a container of one food each night.
The morning will make 6 days since his last BM. He seems happy, and his stomach is soft. My husband and I always worry, since he was born with a blockage due to a small left colon. They the colon would grow to normal size as he grew, but we needed to watch him closely. Our Pediatrician said it is normal for him to go this long, but I'm concerned that it isn't normal since he also eats solids.
Does anyone else have this problem with their infant also eating solids while breastfeeding?

My son Jett, now nine months went through the poo poo change at about five months. And it can sometimes be 11 days in between. I make a teaspoon of flax seed oil in a jar of prunes, than I give him a few spoons of this in the evening. It usually gets him going in a day or so. I'm not to worried. I exclusively nurse and know that breast milk is what he needs and is best. his poops are never hard and he's a cheery little dude! ;-)

My 8 month old did the same at 6 months, exclusively breast fed. Now on solids still goes 5-7 days w/o bowel movements. She has always been a gassy baby and two days before bm she starts to become increasingly uncomfortable, no bloating but lots of gas. I have been off dairy since 5 months due to her lactose sensitivity. I still worry but my ped. said she is fine. She has dropped from 75%-25% for weight but is a fussy eater and ++active. No vomitting but the ped wanted to put her on Ranitadine for silent reflux, I can't bring myself to medicate her with unnecessary drugs. I just hopes she grows out of it.

I just called the Doctor. The Doctor just told me to give him either a full infant suppository or a pediatric suppository cut long way in half for 3-4 days until he is cleaned out. The hope is that his bowels will reset themself.
My 4 month old is right there with everyone. His bms slowed down progressively. He's working on day 5 now. He started to slow down a month ago. He was pooing everytime he ate to a few times a day, to once a day, to every other day, and now...whenever. I hate this! I've heard water or prunes could help, but the Doctor didn't give me the okay for that. He's so fussy and gassy. He's not himself and keeps drawing his legs up. I mentioned the problem to my Doctor last week and they assured me that breast fed babies do this all the time, but it doesn't make me feel any better about the situation. How are you suppose to relax when your baby is showing signs of discomfort? He's gaining well and all. He is running a low grade fever (100.4), but I believe that's from the teething. Why can't babies come with instruction books? They should hand them out as you check out from the hospital.

Hi
My baby didn't poo for 14 days when she was 8 weeks old. I was worried and took her to the doc, he said she was fine and as she was breast fed there was nothing to worry about.
I have let nature take its course and she is now a one poo a week wonder.

Hello there.
My baby is also experiencing the same thing. Longest without poop is 8 days and I brought her to her pediatrician who told us to use a suppository. We used it and she did poop. After that, it took 5 days again and we used a suppository again for her to poop. Her pediatrician advised us to see a pediatric gastrointestinal specialist to check her intestines.
But I read that it is normal for babies to have infrequent bowel movements and it can last as long as 10 days. So now I am less worried knowing that it is normal and that other babies are experiencing this too.

we are experiencing the same thing. it is crazy that a month ago our 2 month old preemie was having normal bm and now we don't go unless he gets a suppository. people are starting to say...oh...maybe it's your breast milk that is doing it. how is that possible? we are just waiting to see what happens but it is difficult to sit by when your baby isn't pooping. i feel like it is something i am doing wrong, but i don't think that is the case. it is good (not so much for all of your little ones) to hear that others have gone through the same thing with their babes. i just hope that it is just a normal thing. i hate to think it is my milk and it is emotionally difficult to have people saying that to you including your husband. i guess maybe it is the hormones affecting me as well. i just don't want to think it is something that i am doing to him.

Well I breastfed only for the first three months do to medical reasons then switched to formula and I have to say my baby my baby is now almost 6mths and she still is not regular my dr. said to give her karo syrup and suppositories but I don't want to give that to her every time I think she should be able to go on her own I don't want to have to depend on those things just for my baby to go. I feel that I should have her tested because she did have a hernia and now its going down. Maybe there is feces stuck in there somewhere I don't know I just want to relieve my baby and help her. A warm bath would help her sometimes on her bum but to help her go but now that doesn't even work anymore. My baby is also a preemie so that makes me worry too that she probably has a digestive problem and her muscles are probably not develop I don't know I just want help and the dr.s act like its okay. I know if I couldn't poo for weeks I would lose it. My baby also spits up frequently and passes gas but she just can't poop.

Our baby is 4 & half months old. Since birth his bowel motion is not regular. In his first 2 months he used to poo once in every 2-3 days and the poo amount used to be a lot. Then the situation started becoming worst. He started pooing once in 4-5 days. For the last 1 month the situation is the worst. He was given suppositories by a doctor after 12 days without poo. This was done at of the best children's hospital here in Sydney and we were referred to a Child Specialist. We were not satisfied by the advise of the specialist. Over the last 1 and half months we have called several times to Karitane, Tresilian, Local Early Childhood center, General Practitioners, family friends, elders and granny's. Nothing has worked so far. We have been giving suppositories to him in every 5-6 days now and he poos. But this morning we have given him one suppositories and this is evening and no sign of him pooing. He passes winds a lot and it's really smelly but it seems it's a good sign of not any blockage in his bowel. We have been giving cooled boiled water, prune juice and nothing helps. Me and my wife is very worried. We are going to see our family doctor again followed by a specialist but don't know what's in our fate. Hope someone read this forum and show some kind of help or some light of help to overcome this when we have tried all the avenues with all sorts of combinations.
