Day 7: (Wednesday)

I don't feel worse!!!
It's amazing. Well, this time I was up every 2.5 hours drinking and taking painkillers and the big pain didn't come back. Around lunch and early afternoon some semi major pain came back but I just ramped up the pain killers a little more and beat it. I had scrambled eggs and a slice of buttered white bread without the crust. I even managed to have a look at my throat. The back of it is white on the sides and my tongue is still mega white. My dangly thing is way swollen too. I can also speak softly.

After eating dinner (pumpkin soup, mashed potato and mashed peas) it hurt more but again not as much as in recent times and the pills fixed that soon enough. Something has definitely turned around today.

Marshal, a friend found this about the white tongue:

"What causes the white coating on my tongue?
Sulfur-producing Anaerobic Bacteria living below the surface of the tongue (away from oxygen) create chemicals, such as Hydrogen Sulfide (the rotten egg smell) when they contact proteins. When the mouth becomes dry, an anaerobic condition is created allowing these chemicals to create more of these compounds which then rise to the tongue’s surface. You notice this eaction if you don’t eat or drink for several hours, or if your mouth is always dry."

I tried to scrape it off but it's not coming off, only a bit at the front. Underneath I don't have red patches and it doensn't burn. The doctor did look in my kmouth yesterday when I got the shot and didn't say anything. I didn't think to ask, was in no state to care then, but I think he would have told me if I had thrush, so hopefully that'll sort itself out. I can't believe you got pneumonia on top of all this. That's unbelievable, I'm so sorry to hear that. Does the thrush add any more pain for you or just the burning tongue after scraping?

I have had some weird hallucination type things, for example I know I'm not in my livingroom talking with my sister but I can see and hear it as if it were happening vividly etc. I think it's the pain meds. Also have had a couple of scary violent dreams.

Yes still in some pain but super excited that I think the worst is OVER.

Day 8: (Thursday)

I still kept waking up throughout the night to drink. I took less painkillers though as I was feeling too tired and out of it from them. The pain level was the same as yesterday, only got bad at around early afternoon. I took more tablets then but after that didn't take any in the evening and was fine.

I have started chewing gum today and it has really helped me be able to move my jaw better now.

There is less white gunk at the back of my throat than yesterday and I can see voids of nothing where it was before like holes. I ate chicken soup and pumpkin soup. Wondering if I should eat some solids in case they help get rid of more white gunk.

Tuesday - post op day # 5.

Where to begin......
My intentions were to take part in this 'daily blog' so that others like me would have a personal reference. A real time experience to what seems like at the time a living hell you might be going thru.

I had to leave out Tuesday becuase my Father in-law finally lost his long battle with Cancer. It was more of a relief for me because I knew how he suffured (my own father died of cancer) but my wife, that's a work in progress.

Tuesday night we stayed at my Mothers house because it's near her fathers. My mother is a active RN. This was a good thing.

I was having pain. The Thrush adds to the soarness of my throat, but again I was at Moms - she made it all better. Don't know why I didn't think of it early, but she suggested Yogurt. Yoplait Whips Light & Fluffy to be exact.

Women are told this all the time for their yeast infections. And since Thrush is basically a yeast infection....guess what? It was first best night of sleep I had in a long time.

It was so good, I slept thru my next med dosage and when I woke up, I wasn't in any real pain. I gargled, brushed my teeth swished some more Nstatin (for the Thrush) around - then took half the dosage for my meds, waited a few then ate my lunch....another Yoplait, and a big bowel of butter squash.

I joked with my wife and mother that before this surgery you would never have gotten me in a room with anything with squash in the title.

Wednesday post day # 6

- We had some funeral arrangements to make that day, so we left out for the hours drive to my in-laws. On the way, I got soooooooo hungry. And brave, that we stopped at a McDonalds. I ordered a single hamburger. I flicked off the ketchup and anything else I thought my burn and proceeded to triple chew the small bites of burger I was making. With each bite came a sip of water. I continued this process until the burger was 3/4 gone. I basically just got tired of chewing. But either way, it went down with no problem.

We took care of the business at my in-laws then headed back to my mothers.

HAD A BIT OF A SCARE last night when I was doing my pre-dinner gargle.

BLOOD! not alot, but enough to make me freak! My mother (God Bless her) was trying to reassure me as I demanded ice water to gargle with.

I gargled to see if the bleeding stopped for about 10 mintues. It eventually stopped but I was weary about this all night (more on this later).

I finally calmed down enough to enjoy another Yoplait, a big bowel of french onion soup and a bowel of orange jello.

For the most part, my pain control was getting better. I found that I could speak a little louder, the thrush on my tongue had all but dissappeared, and I could go longer times between med. Swallowing is still unconfortable, but no longer unbearable.

Like I said earlier, I was freaking out about my blood. Even though it had stopped earlier - I had eaten dinner and I had not seen any more evidence of more blood, I was running to the bathroom hacking up anything I could to see if there was more blood in it.

I do not want to bleed. You can't control your bleeding. You get caterized again. You reset back to square one. Hell no!

I guess Mom the RN got tired of that and decided to slip an anxiety pill under my tongue. I was out for the next 8 hours. WOKE UP FEELING GREAT!

Thursday - post op day # 7

I have to tell you, I'm feeling pretty good today. Other then the ear pain I still get (ear drops for that now). I feel almost normal.

I'm not as tired. The pneumonia isn't that bad, but it's still pneumonia and I'll have to deal with this when I'm healed enought so I don't have a reacurrence of Thrush.

Agapolish its funny that you mention hallucination. I would hallucinate me drinking fluids - so I wouldn't actually drink. When I realized I was hallucinating, I would set the cup at a different location on the table. That's how I kept tract. But the hallucinations seem to have stopped.

I also took a peek down the 'ol pie hole'. My uvula has started to shrink. You can clearly see where my ENT removed my Tonsils, but its really clear and clean looking.

I too am hoping that this long corner is starting to turn.

Friday - post op day # 8

Didn't sleep to well last night. The pneumonia in my chest kept me up for the better part of the night coughing.

When your throat is like this, coughing is the last thing you want to be doing. I eventually broke down and took a sleep aid around 4:am and then slept off and on to around 07:30 when I got up.

Breakfest - enjoyed yogart and some left over soup from the night before.

It's been pretty much drissling ALL day today. Over-cast and just ugly. Not to cold though, but a day to be inside for sure.

Pain for the most part was at about a 3 today - 3 out of the wood chipper 10. The only time I ran into any trouble was when I decided to help a friend out by taking him somewhere to pick up a vehicle. I thought I was going to be back in time for my next meds. BOY WAS I WRONG!

Its the ear pain that drives me crazy when the pain returns. Its like taking a bat to the ear drum each time. Best advice: stay on top of the meds.

Oh, I cough up my first major scab today! UGLY! It didn't hurt, I was drinking some water and felt compelled to 'hack', and up it came o.O with very little if not any blood at all.

AND I had my first sneeze o.O . That was very unpleasant!

Enjoyed a another bowel of french onion soup for lunch. I think I going to venture into more 'solid food' territory.

For dinner I had a bowel of mac & cheese. I took my time, but my throat still felt like c**p after I ate it. I'm still glad I tried because I'm getting tired of soup.

I think I'm going to try some pancakes tomorrow morning for breakfest. Wish me luck!

One fear I do have is, I'm going out of town this weekend for a funeral and my Hydrocodone is expected to run out. Either I stretch it out until Monday or try and deal with the pain using convential over the counter meds. either way its going to be a bumpy ride.

I will have to call my ENT's office on Monday for advice - I don't think I will necassarily need more Hydrocodone, I think that can be dialed down some. Besides, I don't want to keep taking something that I will grow to dependent on.

Based on my earlier experience today - and if I was running out of meds today, I can assure you that over the counter pain medicine would have done no good! I would have needed something stronger.

So maybe some T3's or something like that.

We will see.

Day 9: (Friday)

Things are still the same. The pain level is the same. I have been waking up automatically now every couple of hours, don't need the alarm anymore. As before I am still trying to take less pain tablets. They have really been making me feel sick with hallucinations, sweating, shaky, heart burn stomach pains and headache. Some of those symptons I'm sure are due to not eating etc too. A very slow lathargic day. Pain still does a great job of beating me around lunch and afternoon. Wonder why since I don't have a day or night!!

Day 10: (Saturday)

Finally double digits I thought. Still hurts, still the same. My white gunk coverage is the same, my dangly "uvula" is still giant and annoying because it's constantly touching my tongue and that irritates it making it hurt and also makes me feel like I have something to swallow all the time. I can feel the mucusy gunk in the bank of my throat which has not reduced. Still lethargic and hazy, still can't talk properly, only can talk in a really lame way. Still on mushy soft foods like scrambled eggs and chicken soup. So over it!!

Day 11: (Sunday)

I managed to sleep longer today but still waking up automatically randomly. The pain has reduced a bit today, I was happy about that but while gargling difflam some accidentally got too far back in my throat and it stung SO BAD I was paralyzed over my sink with tears and saliva pouring off my stunned face for a short time. Still nothing with the scabs.

Marshal!
So sorry to hear about all the trouble and your father in law. This all makes it so much worse for you and it's bad enough already..
Your hallucinations about drinking water were funny though

Tuesday - post op day # 12

Sorry Agapolish you don't seem to be feeling any better.
I have experience with reflux (Gerd) so - pop a Prilosec, you will feel a lot better!

Each day is a little better for me. This past weekend was ROUGH! Woke up coughing so bad, it triggered my gag reflex and I vomitted.

My GOD THAT was painful! It broke me down to my knees. I think I might have even teared up a little it burned so bad!

Solid foods are still a no-no, even though I still try. Most of my scabs have fallen off. I still have a few on the left side, but mostly they are on my right side.

Which is also the side where I get the most pain (including ear). I'm no longer on the liquid Hydrocodone. Now on on just plain vicodin pills.

They don't dull the pain instantanly like the liquid, but they work better in the long haul. They do give me the 'dry mouth' which was driving me crazy last night.

So nothing really new to report here. Hey I lost 15 pounds - don't really know if that's a good thing yet. I'm just hoping my throat is in fight shape for next week, it's THANKSGIVING here!

Until next time.

I have been following your stories about the tonsillectomy..I am so glad that I am not in that position again.I am 32 and got mine out when I was 19 because I too had severe cases of strep throat and tonsillitis. I always had laryngitis and also bronchitis at least once a month. The pain for me too was unbearable! I went through all the things you have described. The only difference is that rest was no option for me.I had a son that was 2 and a baby that was 6 months and I was a single mother! I will tell you though that the worst part of the whole thing for me was when the scabs came off!!!One morning I woke up and something just didn't feel right. The pain was gone by then but everytime I would try to talk or everytime I would swallow I would automatically gag..It felt like some thing was stuck, like a cotton ball or something.I called the hospital to see what I could do, and I swear while I was trying to explain to them what I was going through I couldn't stop gaging. They told me to come to the hospital so they could have a look. So,I got ready and had someone drive me and about a block away from my house, I swallowed and when I swallowed,I swallowed SOMETHING! Something big, someting sharp and someting disgusting! I started gaging and coughing and eventually vomited in a cup I had and, oh , it was so groce! There were the scabs! I swear, one was about the size of a quarter..So needless to say,I threw up the whole way to the hosp. Showed them what came up. They put a scope down my throat to make sure there was no bleeding and nothing else "stuck" in there, which, there wasn't...But after that, the worst part ever, it was all gone! I felt so great. No more pain,no more "full" feeling. I was ready to begin my new life! And I did! Was it all worth it to me? I think so. I hardly EVER,EVER get sick anymore. The worst I have is an occasional sinus cold and maybe a fever once a year!(And that's pretty good considering I have 4 school-aged children)I haven't had strep since not even a sore throat! I do,however, occasionally feel like there is something in that back of my throat and it does bug me but I have had tests done and it's just some bilingual tissue that gets irritated. I will not go through that again though..Once was enough!(The throat surgery) I am glad to see that through all of this, you two seem to have a sense of humor..I found a few things funny! I wish you all the luck in your recovery..Things will be much better once this all passes!!

Wednesday - post op day # 13

Thank you bhalligan32 for you contribution.
I can not even begin to fathom what it must have been like to deal with your recovery AND two very small children at the same time.

I am continuously amazed at the 'strength' of Women. I watched (almost help-less at times) as my own wife dealt with the final days of her father and my own recovery plus continued to work; keeping our household in order and our 3 children ( 6, 4 and 9 months). Amazing.

But even she had some degree of help. Like I mentioned earlier, my mother helped out a few days, plus I have two older children that live with us from a previous marriage (19, and 16). So they also were a big help.

Pretty much nothing has changed since yesterday. Getting kinda of bored. I'm actually looking foward to going back to work on Monday (if you can believe that o.O ) - but then I get one of those sharp pains and I think about taking off more time. I'll deal with it.

I'm eating more solids - still chewing about a gazillion times though just to get it down.

I'm finding I can speak in longer sessions without sounding like Kermit the frog and before my throat gets to dry to swallow without pain. I'm about an hour and half without discomfort now.

I'm going to need to improve that - I use my voice alot at work.

Certain things still bother me: loud sounds (high pitched), sour things just KILL me. I can barely tolerate anything grape. AND I LOVE GRAPE!

I chose the Gatoraid G2 Low Calorie becuase I thought it wasn't as 'grapie' WRONG! STILL KILLS ME!

I can't even take the icy pops I brought anymore. To sour.
Things that are to salty also has the same effect. When I gargle.....AARGUH!

You know, you never give to much thought to food descriptions such as "pointy" or "scratchy" until you have a surgery like this. It gives new meaning when you try and eat a chip or an Oreo.

I was reduced to just licking the creame out of my wifes holiday Oreo's. And EVEN that started to kill my salivary glands. Humiliating! Pissed her off also, because she said I ruined about 7 Oreo's. 8-|

Yawning. I missing yawning. I can't quit get that full jaw extention without excruciating pain.

The ear pain comes and goes. I learned the pain in my ear has nothing to do with actual ear pain, but rather a nerve thats proximal to where my tonsils were and that was shared. The pain is actually in my throat, but my the nerve sends the signal to my brain saying someone is digging in your right or left ear with a screw driver.

Still can't really blow my nose without pain. Kinda miss that also.

Energy level is back up. Starting to look at my wife again in the 'biblical sense' ;-) But I think I'll wait a little longer.

That's all I need is for the heat of the moment to strike and I blow a scab and bleed every where :$ yeah, I can wait.

So, until next time......

Day 12: (Monday)

The pain is sure not dissapearing at the rate that it appeared. It's been a very steep incline and now what seems like a very slow and steady decline. This is really frustrating and annoying.

I am eating the same things over and over: scrambled eggs, grain bread with margarine and no crusts, white fish, some boiled veggies, chicken soup, frittata. A new gross thing that is happening is I seem to have holes in the back of my throat where the food goes and gets stuck. There is also mucus in there too. Randomly a mix of chewed food and mucus will emerge into my mouth from these voids and completely gross me out. It sticks and tastes horible!!! I can't really maneuver the stuff out of there myself because it would require muscle work which is just too [painful.

I am on minimal painkillers now, I really want to stop them completely because of how sick they were making me feel and I have had a lot of headaches now too which I am afraid were some sort of withdrawal symptoms. I have started very moderate exercise in the form of walking.

Day 13: (Tuesday)

Felt a little less pain when I woke up. But not a lot of impromenet. It got worse later. Still hurts to drink, cannot talk properly. I took a couple of anti inflammatory pills hoping they will reduce the swelling but I can't tell any difference.

My uvula is still very swollen and somewhat painful, I have white gunk on both sides of the back of my throat. I am still spitting out this mucus.

I have started to try to be on a normal sleep schedule now. I was still waking up after about 3 hours sleep from habit but have been going right back to sleep and it's working.

Day 14: (Wednesday)

No improvement. I was due to go back to work this Friday but I can't. I have received next week off and am now due back on Mon dec 1. It's still painful and swollen and I can't speak which is the biggest problem.

I am glad I am sleeping nights now and awake during the day, that's a nice change. I'm sleeping a long time though I am dead tired by 9:30 pm and can sleep for 12 hours easily.

The gross food/mucus thing reemerging is still happening. What's with these holes now? Are they going to always be there?

I just want to be normal now I have had enough!!!!
