I am new to this dicsussion board but wanted to share my experience with the Mirena and ask for some advice or suggestions.
I had the IUD for the full 5 years...during those five years, I experienced pressure on my bladder (causing frequent urination) and some sexual side effects. I spent years (literally) thinking that something was wrong with me (sexually) which took it's toll on my marriage. After having the IUD removed in November, I realized it had caused serious discomfort during intercourse. YEAH!! I'm normal again. I am in no way trying to discredit the Mirena IUD; I feel it is remarkable for some and not so much for others.
Two weeks after having the IUD removed, I found out I was pregnant. My husband and I were trying, so we found out very early. Three days after our first positive pregnancy test, I began having what seemed to be a menstrual cycle; I say "seemed to be" because I hadn't had one in 5 years. Every since I had my cycle, I have been experiencing irregular bleeding. I had taken a pregnancy test 2 or 3 days ago, and notice that the pregnancy hormone seems to be declining. I realize that I have likely had a miscarriage or chemical pregnancy; I am still unclear what the difference is?? My concern is that my husband and I have had unprotected sex. Is infection a concern I should have even though I couldn't have been more than 3 weeks along? I am also concerned about becoming pregnant again right away. Since we have already had unprotected sex, I am hesitant to begin taking birth control.
Please...any advice or suggestions?? Or anyone have a similar experience? I do not currently have medical insurance and right now (with the holidays) it hard to come up with the extra money for an unnecessary? doctors visit.

I had the mirena iud put in back in December of 2005. It was wonderful. I did not have a period from day one of having it put in. I had no problems with sexual dysfunction and I even lost weight. I had it taken out in September of 2008. In December of 2008 I found out i was pregnant. I ended up have a miscarriage. I believe the reason was due to the fact that I didnt have a period for three years and I just got pregnant way to soon. I think my body needed time to get back to normal. Lets face it, it wasnt in Gods plan for women not to have their period. Since then I have decide I really don't want more children so I am having the Mirena put back in tomorrow. I hope this time it is as good as the first. I think it makes a huge difference on who puts it in. Maybe if you had had it adjusted it may not have hurt your back so bad. I don't think this is the birth control method for all people. I just know it was good for me.
