My HRM battery died over the weekend and running without it seems very weird.
Didn't realize how much I relied on it for monitoring my effort.
Bad thing with a Polar unit is it needs to go to one of their repair centers for a battery raplacement.

Be thankful it was the HRM that died when your heart flat lined. :D
I just put mine on for a run in about 15 minutes.

I had run thousands of miles before I bought my HRM, so it pretty much reinforced what I already knew about my efforts. It was cool though. I did enjoy having it. I also had the transmitter/strap that you had to send to Polar. When mine died, I was so disgusted that I threw it all in the trash. I had the most basic model, so it wasn't that big of a deal. I decided that I did just fine without it.

The turnaround from Polar is pretty good, usually about 2 weeks. I think it was like 45 bux for my replacement, they changed the watch battery and gave me a new monitor and strap

That would drive me nuts! I've been trying to ween myself off some of my gadgets, the HRM being one. (there has to be a recovery group somewhere) So far, I've given it up on my long runs.
Hope you get it back soon.

I don't use one, does it help at all or is it just for a bit of personal knowledge?

Depends on who you ask. I find it useful to make sure my recovery days are truly easy runs. I do wear it for other runs, but that's mainly for my anal retentive side.

I like it because I can monitor how hard I am working. Instant gratification, so to speak!

It all depends how you use it. Right when I got mine, I borrowed a book from rtpd, on how to use the HRM in training/racing. I think knowing how to use a HRM properly can provide postive benefits in the long run (pun intended)
