My childrens father had hip resurfacing, he is 64yrs good health, plays tennis. The nerve pain he has experienced has been terrible, a change in pain meds helped. He would be doing much better but he has drop foot, hopefully temporary. Should he get EMG and if so when? THANKS

My left hip replacement has left me with an inability sometimes to stand a sheet on the area above the knee. I cannot wash that area without pain and it feels like someone is sticking me with needles. It doesn't go down my leg into my foot, probably because I had the anterior approach? I am scared to death and am looking into this for diagnosis. I don' t know what to do because I still have another hip to get done and I know I don't care for the pain I deal with without the surgery. But now I can't figure out which is worse.

Hi,

I had a total hip replacement on my left hip 3 years ago and have exactly the same thing as you, in terms of numbness. Did your numbness go away, after the therapy to replace the hamstring? I did exercises for 2 years, with a small improvement, but still have the numbness and a tight feeling around the knee. In a warped way, it is such a relief to find other people with the same problem. My husband thinks I am making it up and that I should be like I was when I was 20 years old! Julie

Hi I've just discovered this site, I'm from Scotland and I had (L) hip full hybrid replacement in March 2009. After the op I couldn't feel my foot and calf was very sore. Consultant said he'd told me that nerve damage could occur in 1/200 surgeries and would recover in up to 18 mths. So far no recovery and walking etc really painful, (L) leg also left 1/2inch longer...feel like a weeble sometimes!!
I'm due to have same op on (r) leg but very worried!! Tried Gabapentin for nerve pain but side effects not good...(weight gain, night sweats). Any info is welcome!!

Hello.
I am 4 1/2 weeks post op a total hip replacement and I am experiencing the same problem with my inner part of my shin area feeling numb from the knee to my ankle on the left leg. It feels hard and numb. The doctor doesn't say much when I mention it accept it takes time. I also feel the operative leg is and looks longer. I limp to the opposite side then before.

It will be two years after a total hip replacement due to a fall with a ladder. at the start of July. I never had pain and was back to work in 4 weeks.
I still have a limp, and can not put any pressure on the leg to play golf or run. I have been working out fast walking about 4 mph for the past three months, but it has not helped with the strength of the leg being able to do these two functions. Any suggestions appreciated

i had my left hip replaced nov 7 2011. ready to go home but hemoglobin dropped so had to stay. had terrific pain all over leg. doc didn't come for over 7 hours. found out had hematoma the size of basketball on sciatic nerve. opened me up again and took it out. next day same thing happened, opened me up again. have no up or out movement of foot. extreme pain in foot, like steady "5" and with the pins, needles and burning it goes to "8 or 9". just wondering if the delay in getting it out made any difference. it is now dec 30 and there really are no changes day to day. physical therapy is a waste, i can do the bike, the arm thing etc. as i was/am in good shape to begin with. 57 years old. why pay for them to watch what i can do at home anyway. feel like i am getting nowhere and don't know where to turn. after reading things i am so worried that it won't come back or will take so long. me, being a bull, thought i'd get it back quickly. steve

I had THR in 2006 and May 2011. The Sciatic nerve was streched to far and I now have drop foot. My mother also had it after THR. I believe that in some people the Sciatic nerve is shorter than others.

I take Gabapentin for the pain and it works well with no side affects. How ever the pain changes. At first it changed like everyday. Not so much now. Back of the leg some times cramps. The worse is the toes, sometimes after I take my (Brace/AFO) off I can't hardly touch them. However I find pheraphy helps and a good massage is great. Long socks and hi top tennis shoe help with swelling and ankle pain.

HI people, I just had my 7th xray and my doctor of choice said we CANNOT give you your hip replacement until we address the back problems first as it could cause paralisys. These back problems were completely unnoticed by me, yet they are reticulitis and stenosis.  Hope all of you good luck and please find a practitioner that heals ALL of you and not just the obvious.

hello there, the same thing has just happend to me, i am a young 63 and have cried so many tears, i waited so long to get my hip done, the doc gave all the spiel this was the worst hip he had send, they gave me the pain blocker in my back and when i was in the first day after surgery and found my leg numb all they kept saying was it was that. well i am now 5 weeks after surgery, my leg from the knee is numb, i have drop foot, the pins and needles are awful, about 8pm the burning starts and shooting pains in my foot. i went to see a nurologist that i contacted myself, he said they damaged your leg when they rotated your legs. he ordered an afo which i have not got yet. also the nerve pill at night gaberpentin are somethling like that

the pt the doc everyone says the same thing it may come back nobody can commit, nobody seems to no much all hearsay. i was very very active, this has got me so upset that i got shingles wondering if it would ever get better. it seems u swap one problem for another.

i have been on this pc a few hours just trying to look up info. its seems some of those rubs might help. i hate taking pain killers but u soon get exhausted with no sleep. why it starts at night also nobody seems to know. its nice to hear someone else who has got through the same thing, although i wish they had not had to. cheers everyone. like winston churchill said dont ever ever ever give up. jill carter.

I too was left with a drop foot after my total hip replacement. The Dr. told me a nerve was stretched. The constant numbness, tingling, feeling like needles are sticking me never goes away. I am on gapapentine for the pain but it helps every so slightly. I was told I have severe nerve damage to the peroneal and tibial nerve. I have since gotten into a pool and now have some movement in my toes and can now flex my foot downward. I was told it would take 2-3 years before the nerve would be healed. Has anyone gotten thru this period and actually recovered? Does the pain eventually go away? I can't seem to find anyone with answers. Thanks,

Deb Musser

My Father at 75 years of age had hip replacement surgery. He immediately developed Foot Drop. That was fifteen years ago and still no change. This has gone to cause him to require knee replacement surgery in the opposite leg. However it is not recomended due to his age. His Hip surgeon said my Dad was hallucinating after the surgery due to a reaction to the anesthetic and had to be restrained. He was told, that while fighting the restraints, his nerve was damaged.
