I have herniated discs in my lower back that has caused pain from my inner thigh, hip, outer hip and leg and knee off and on depending on how much I stand or walk that day. I am in chiropractic treatment and in trying to relieve the pressure from the discs, I now have some numbness right at that outer knee soft area. The chiropractor told me it would come and go and when I apply ice to my lower back and take an anti-inflammatory like motrin or naproxen, it goes away. The nerves pass through a small hole in the bone of the back and any inflammation or herniation of the lumbar discs can cause this leg pain/numbness. I got so bad I could hardly walk and with 3 weeks of chiropractic treatment I am now doing much better! The thing is that prior when I went to my regular doctor, they were only looking at the site of the pain (hip, knee, leg) and were just giving me injections that lasted a few hours and then the pain returned. Now that the chiropractor has determined the "root" of the pain, I have much more relief and not so much worry about damaging the nerves.

I too have this. It seems to be a result of a bakers cyst that happened a couple of months ago, but I am not for sure.

ugh, same exact symptoms here, too. a few months of sharp pain and burning, followed by severe sensitivity and now numbess, sometimes extending to my toes and up to my quad. this is the FIRST discussion i've found that nailed the exact symptoms and didn't make my think i have a tumor or neurological disease. so while i'm sorry you all are going through this, i sure am glad you wrote about it. for the record, i am a group fitness instructor and play soccer 3 times a week. i'm guessing (hoping?) it's bursitis/overuse... sigh. good luck everyone!

I have the same symptoms on the outside of my left knee. There is numbness and sometimes tingling. It's as if a 1.25" section just to the left of the kneecap is dead. I cannot use that knee to get into bed, because the burning sensation is too much discomfort.

Hi! I too have similar symptoms which started as a sharp pain the lateral side of my knee below and to the side of my knee cap which came when I kneeled. Now it's numb. Researching this I think it's caused by a compression of the infrapatellar branch of the sphenous nerve which looks like it innervates this area. It can be damaged by trauma too. An orthopedic surgeon should be able to answer this fully so I'm likely going to check with them. Hope this helps!!

This is most likely due to a pinched nerve on your lower back. Lay on your stomach. Prop yourself up so that your elbows and wrists are still on the floor as well as your lower half. Arch your back inward slightly. This helped me tremendously. I also had someone rubs by my sciatic nerve.

I had a tkr 2 months ago & have numbness on the entire left side of the incision. On the right of the incision is where the pain is and sometimes radiates down my leg. I asked my surgeon at my most recent visit and he explained that it was from the specific nerve(s) that were cut during surgery. He said the pain should go away over time but the numbness may not.

After having a torn meniscus in both knees, could it be that a piece of meniscus has migrated across the knee and is compressing the nerves and thus causing numbness?
