I had an ultrasound and it came back clear. They said it was probably due to infection. I relaxed afterwards and didn't touch it and now it's reduced in size and doesn't hurt. I'm glad I had a scan though, they can tell if it's cancerous from the ultrasound.

I have had this same problem for over three years now. I have had ultra sound tests, these do NOT show cancer. They can only show mass which could be many things. I have had numerous blood tests as well, these are only good if your doctor has specifically requested testing for cancer. I have been to numerous doctors. They are all baffled, I have only had some success after seeing 1 doctor who prescribed me some low dose valium, they relax the throat without making me to sleepy. The only test that will show if you have cancer or not is called a barium test. If you are like me and live in Australia, no one can you as we do not have the people required here to do the tests. If you happen to be in Europe or USA , they can do these tests in minutes for you.The Royal Brisbane can do tests but it would be too late by the time they get too see you. I have been on their list for over three years now and am still waiting just to be seen. No matter what anyone including your doctor tells you, treat it as though it is cancer. If you are in a situation to afford it you can have the tests done anywhere for around $150 to $250 at any of the diagnostic centers. The secret to successfully beating throat cancer is early diagnosis. If you do not make it happen yourself your doctor certainly won't. Be sure they are actually testing for cancer. I think also despite what the so called experts say that it is cancer. The local g.p. would not even be able to diagnose it, and they feel they should make it their priority to tell you it is anxiety etc. Do not listen to them and get the tests done they can not tell you even with blood tests if you do or don't have cancer. Only specialists can, so do not waste time with blood tests that are not going to show what you want to know. My lump started off small and has grown a bit within 3 years, they gave me anti biotics too very strong ones. These work for about a week at first and not at all after more then 3 months. They told me it was pharingitis. It started like yours and now it is there ALL the time and my throat is always tight. They next thought it was anxiety. I do not no of anyone who is anxious 24/7. The truth is that it will make you feel like someone is choking you, you will get very dizzy, and always feel sick as well as weak and tired. I personally think it is cancer, but you have to be seen by a specialist who can order the specific tests. Do not go to the local g.p. as they will order every other test but the ones for cancer. It will eventually get so bad that like me the best you can hope for is to slip away in your sleep rather then fading a day at a time. This is my opinion on this and I speak from personal experience. If only one person listens and manages to save themselves from this slow way of dying then it is certainly worthwhile me giving my opinion.....

Sorry to burst your bubble but let me assure you they can NOT tell if it is cancerous from the ultrasound. The ultrasound only gives them an image of the size of the said gland etc. This will show the size of mass etc but do not be fooled it does NOT show cancer. If you ask the person doing the scan they tell you that they are looking for a mass to indicate that something is wrong . They will measure both the nodules and glands on both sides of your throat and neck areas. This is NOT a cancer test it merely is looking for indicators. You could still have cancer and this will not show it. Please get a blood test specifically to test for cancer and insist on some other tests such as a barium test etc. This is the only way that you will know for sure ..

Please listen. Don,t see your local dr. Book an appointment with a specialist or diagnotics center. The key is early detection if you go to doctors who are not specialists you are wasting early detection. Your local g.p. can only find one type of cancer the same as you and I can see the local dr can tell you if you have skin cancer because he/she can see it. The ultrasound does NOT show cancer. If the local dr orders blood tests most of the time these are not for cancer either. The dr will test for many other things before cancer. You may think they are testing for cancer when they are testing for other reasons why you feel sick. INSIST ON SPECIFIC TESTS FOR CANCER and make sure you get the results as well as the dr..

i had an ultrasound and they told me it was just slightly bigger than the other and possibly due to infection, nothing to worry about. After that, I stopped touching it and it went down in size but it does still come back up sometimes and it hurts when it does. I also get pains on the same side but in the back of my neck. I also have a bad tooth on that side which is the next step, I will see if that it the cause.

I woke up this morning with this painful, small bulge just under my jaw on the right side. I know its my lymph node, but i've never had a swollen lymph node in my 24 years of living. I've had everything from scarlett fever to mono, and more, but this is particularly worrying me. How long were yours swollen? :-)

Well let me add to the posts here....as many of us that have posted something here...I too had a swollen lymph node, under my jaw and it swelled up quickly...it was so large that everyone could see it, I didnt have a jaw line anymore it was so large.  I was concerned as I am also dealing with a kidney stone.  I had placed a hot towel on it and it started to go down quite quickly, then when I pressed on it, I could feel something draining into my throat. I went to the ER and the doctor there was not concerned since it was continuing to go down. He also suggested to eat some jolly rancher candies to stimulate that gland so that it could continue to drain.  So any comments?  What is the medical field turning into?

Did you have it checked for Parotiditis? Sometimes the parotid gland gets blocked and becomes swollen and painful. Sometimes antibiotics so it would be worth asking your doctor. Also try sucking on sour candy throughout the day as this help to create saliva and can help ease the symptoms of the parotid gland is indeed blocked. I would go to your physician and have him check it out again and ask if it is a possibility that it could be parotiditis.

In Australia a general practitioner may not be able to diagnose cancer. However, there ARE blood tests they can order that would be a good indicator of cancer like a tumor marker blood test, as well as, a regular complete blood count with a differential and the results from that can show indication of infection and several different types of anemia which, depending on the type of anemia or the results of the CBC w/Diff a doctor may refer a person to a hematologist/oncologist. As for anxiety, IT CAN cause muscle tension and chronically tense muscles can develop knots. Teeth grinding at night will cause muscle tension in the jaw as well. Have you thought about going to a massage therapist once or twice a week for about 4 weeks. They can greatly improve muscle tension and anxiety. AND yes muscle tension can totally last 24/7 if you don't go in to that 4th stage of REM sleep.
As for only a specialist diagnosing cancer they can also misdiagnose and give a false negative.

Sounds like you had Parotiditis pronounced pair-o-tie-tis. It sounds like a blocked Parotid gland. They do get big, but eating or sucking on sour candy stimulates the salivary glands/parotid glands causing you to salivate more thus unblocking the parotid gland. I'm an RN and have taken care of many home care patients who have this issue and when I call their docs to tell them I think a person might have Parotiditis and schedule them an appointment to be seen they are usually surprised that I even know what it is, how to spell it, and that I even picked up on the issue. As an RN I cannot diagnose, so I send them to their doctor or have the doctor come visit them if they are a visiting physician. Apparently, the ER docs or nurses did not explain what they thought was going on with you. That is what concerns me, no one takes the time to explain things to patients anymore. *smh*
