Definitely happens with tequila, agave products, some red wines and vinegars (sulfites). Rarely with beer, but it happens on occasion. But tequila kills me!

That's it! I knew that cramping sensation was familiar from ingesting something other than just red wine- aspirin! If I chew an aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid), I get the same painful jaw cramp.

Thank you.

I drank a big glass of water and it is gone. I returned to my glass of wine immediately and it is 90% improved.

I have the answer. What is so crazy about it is that I didn't get the answer from a doctor. I got it from a random friend many years ago. I was telling this friend that sometimes after drinking alcohol I would get this pain behind both ears. He told me it was from a lack of Vitamin C. He told me to drink some orange juice or to have any kind of citrus fruit when I get the pain. I tried it and sure enough the pain goes away immediately, and I mean instantly. I actually posted this on another website years ago, and it worked for every person on there. Any citrus fruit will work, orange, pineapple, lemon, grapefruit, etc. If you have the chewable vitamin C, that will work great too. Take one bite into the chewable C and the pain will disappear immediately.

I just realized that it was on this board when I answered this several years ago in a different thread. You guys can look it up and you will see that the orange juice, etc, worked on everyone on this board who who tried it.

I was diagnosed with TMJ/TMD 20 yrs ago. I have found that darker beers and certain wine coolers, apple juice and cider and grape juices are worst for me. If well diluted I'm ok, I've always associated it with things of a high acid content. Every time I've mentioned it to my dentists I've gotten the ole "deer in the headlights" look. Nice to know I'm not alone but a real reason would help also.

I think we have at least two different problems here based on pain descriptors and potential causes. My pain is like the balloon one or cramping, but decidedly not even near stinging. It just hurt so much I threw up this time. I find I usually only get it from mixed tequila drinks, and not always. Sometimes it's from another drink, sometimes the same kind of drink doesn't trigger it. I often drink them with carbs, but I hadn't paid attention. Tonight I had it along side potato on pizza crust, so carb central. I do have tmj, I do have some metal filings (it does not feel tooth related but idk).

I.have this pain after breaking a fast. 2 days without food and maybe 2-3 cups of water. like others have said it feels like pain caused from blowing up a balloon as a child (where the lower jaw connects to the skull, the flesh in that area).

the pseudoephedrine might be a culprit. I get this pain after a weekend of smoking methamphetamine (which means no eating and very little water). the first meal and large glass or two of water triggers this every time.

I've always gotten this, basically all my life.  It's always with alchohol.  Usually with sweeter alchohol (a wine cooler will always give it to me).  I get it sometimes with beer and wine, but not always.

And usually when drinking alchohol while eatting.

Honestly, I doubt it has anything to do with pseudoephedrine as I never take the stuff.

Not sure what causes it, but if this many people get it, I imagine it's common enough to be harmless.  I've been totally healthy all my life, but I still get it occasionally, so I've never really worried about it.

I have a problem with anything acidic... The first sip is always the worst.... My jaw tightens and my mouth waters... It hurts! Had it all my life and never been able to find out why it happens... Is this the same thing? I mean it doesn't seem to happen with just alcohol... It is really annoying and painful....
