I too have the pain on the left side, two little bumps on the bottom inside of my jaw and chronic pressure in my ear that turns to pain if I touch the bumps or eat on that side of my mouth. There is also pain on the left side of my throat. My dentist thinks I'm crazy. She said it’s very unusual and she’s never heard of this before. But give it 3 weeks and if it doesn’t go away, she’ll ask other doctors. I explained that this has been going on for about a month, but she wants me to wait another 3 weeks anyway. She thinks it is "bone overgrowth" and it's just inflamed right now. Guess she’s clueless.
However, I recently had an upper respiratory infection and was put on antibiotics. The pain went away. A week later, the pain came back, so I’m thinking it’s some sort of infection. Even telling her that, she wants me to wait 3 more weeks….not liking this dentis.

I apparently have this TMJ for about 3 months. The pain is low level and hurts. I´m scared the pain killers will not work after a while. I´m told that will happen. The pad is gone, I believe in jaw joint. Bone against bone. But I could be wrong. The last doctor says the pad is gone, but he gave up, said he couldn´t fix it after about 4 visits and didn´t charge me the last visit.. What happens is that the muscle under the jaw swells when the pain pill wears off every 8 hours right now. Trouble is I get an earache and a throat ache. You press on the joint under the ear it hurts. I figure it is an infection, but from where? Doctor said my ear drum is pink and inflamed. I get the noises and clicking from jaw joint on one side of face. The pain radiates to the lower jaw and teeth. The dentist said nothing wrong with my teeth, but might be a gland infection. I have had ultra sound and x rays, but the doctors ( I´ve tried 5 ) and taken two courses of 10 day antibiotics, muscle relaxants ( LYRICA ) but the doctors have just given up. They say nothing is wrong. I live in Belize but have to go to Mexico to see a maxillfacial surgeon for checkup. None in this country of Belize. The swelling starts after every 8 hours currently when a pain pill wears off and the joint under the ear hurts like hell. After the swelling starts, it presses on those nerves along the side of the face and head and the pain gets excruciating. They call it the suicide pain. Since I´m 73 yrs old, I´m considering suicide if I cant get it stopped. Unless something dramatic happens, I will not see my 74 th birthday in November. I believe in quality of life, not this stuff.
My last option seems to be a gland infection. Or pulling my wisdom teeth, one by one, the ones I have left. I´m tired of eating liquid foods, mashed in the blender. Fighting this pain every day and then if I let it go a couple of hours, it presses on the facial nerves and THEN the pain gets unbelievably intense.

Been having a similar problem.  The pain is sharp and it comes and goes.  When it comes it only lasts for 10-30 seconds but it is super painful.  I usually grip my neck.  My mother said it could be a clot and I should take Aspirin.  When I did the pain went away.  Going this week to have my Lymph nodes checked out since they have been swollen. The pain started 8 months ago and eventually went away for about 3-4 months and suddenly came back.  Only real change is I've stopped drinking soda....go figure.

I have had bumps under my jaw for years and years now. I have one above my jaw, at least five under my jaw, and one under my collarbone. They are movable, and some are bigger than others. They hurt occasionally. I am worried that I have cancer or something. Can someone please help?

hi everyone, I've never posted on a site but have been in pain for 4 years now and finally have a diagnosis and thought I might help. 4 years ago I had a sinus infection that lasted almost 5 months and was on antibiotics steroids anti inflamatories and nothing helped. It was so bad and the pain was a 10 all the time. I knew it was bad when my husband had to shake me and practically tackle me when I took a butcher knife and tried to kill myself and I don't remember doing it. I was in severe pain for a long time. Then to top it off I went completely deaf for three weeks because my ears filled up with fluid. I wanted to die!!! I took matters into my own hands and started reading and researching online for anything that would help. I tried apple cedar vinegar, vitamins, herbs, netti pot, hot showers, sudafed, and tons of other things. Eventually I got my hearing back when my ear drums ruptured. Since then I have had poor hearing and tonsilloliths that come out of my glands and the feeling of pressure in my left neck like someone is choking me. My ears feel full and I have great pressure at my temples. I went to the ENT yesterday and had a hearing test. My left ear has some hearing loss. I had two ENT's examine me for over an hour each, both listening to my symptoms which change slightly all the time. Sometimes I have a more choking feeling. My left gland hurts sometimes, my ears change in pressure, there is almost a kazoo sound in my left ear, it feels like it "clamps shut" sometimes. They listened to everything and looked up my nose, in my ears, and wayyyyy down my throat many times. Then the doctor told me two things. My sinuses ARE inflammed but only slightly and are causing post nasal drip. You think, hmmm,,,, that's it???? She said if you have it for a very long time, like four years, it will make everything irritated.... Dripping down your throat and glands and eustachian tubes. Then she said I also have TMJ. This will give the sensation do ear fullness, knot or pressure in my throat, pain or pressure in my temples, choking feeling etc. she put me on a nose spray to make my sinus calm down, netti pot to wash my sinuses, and a mouth guard to stop clenching at night, and exercises during the day to calm my jaw. She said it will take 6-8 weeks to get the inflammation under control. I have felt like c**p for 4 years and after one night of nose spray and trying not to clench I feel 1 step better. To top it off my blood work showed two things. I am very low in vitamin D. She said this can make you feel like you're dieting! I asked how and she said that it throws off everything in your body especially calcium which is responsible for muscle spasms like feeling choked in my throat. I also have high sugar and I'm not overweight. I've changed my diet, been on 50,000 IU of vit d for two weeks and saw the Ent. I'm starting to feel better. Hope this helps at least 1 person....... Heather

This is what I was thinking. I have similar--painful nodule that comes up under my jawbone. One week it was on the right side. The next time I turned around it was on the left. I also noted that my gum was sore (on each side respectively), so I assumed it was probably an infection in a gland in that area. Now I am glad to know which glad that is called. Thanks.

It's been three years now since an ache started under the right hand jaw. Now the pain isn't always there, maybe for a few days, goes away for a few days, maybe hurts a lot, then disappears for a month. Sometimes when I eat/swallow very painful but sometimes not. My dentist says there's nothing there; my ENT man couldn't find anything; ultrasonic scan found all glands OK and no blockages in ducts; trip to the thyroid specialist, she says all OK.

Nice to know "nothing's wrong" - except I still have this wretched pain.

This pain under jaw seems to be quite common. I have the same thing, it comes out of the blue for me almost like a cramp in the muscles under the jaw. I always thought it could be a misalignment in my jaw that is causing pressure in the tissues and muscles specifically triggered by certain movements, sort of like a cramp as it seems temporary for me, comes and goes.

I had similar symptoms. Ultimately, had to remove my sub-mandibular salivary glands and ducts that were blocked by severe inflammation. That was 2 months ago-- pain has disappeared but still experiencing some muscle spasms and knots under the incision. I also had esophagitis and dysphagia as a result of all of this. I sure hope you get some answers. That pain was excruciating for me. I hope your symptoms are not as severe.

I have the exact same problem, and after reading these forums I think several people have touched on what's going on.  I have an empty socket from a wisdom tooth that just disintegrated, and after a day or so of it throbbing painfully, I ended up with the same tender knot under my jaw.  I do agree that lactose has something to do with it, as I stupidly ate ice cream a few days ago even though I know that my stomach cannot handle it.  I had terrible heartburn for a few days before and during the episode with my inflamed gums as well.  So please do not jump to conclusions and immediately assume the worst.  I almost did yesterday, and all this does is send you into a stressful panic which can make you feel even worse.

I am going to try some herbs/foods with antibiotic properties, like echinacea and garlic, and simply watch my diet.  I also think it is worth mentioning that I had been watching what I eat, and only eating fresh foods cooked at home.  Then I went on vacation and ate whatever I pleased, and now I'm stuck with an aching hole in my mouth and a painful knot under my jaw.  Ugh!  I considered going to a doctor, but realized that all they would do is poke and prod me and send me to have endless tests done, and all with no insurance.  Don't think so!  So many things can be healed or cured by a change in diet, or by using natural remedies.  In fact, I had quite a scare with my heart awhile back, which sparked my change in diet.  Cutting out the thousands of milligrams of sodium I was unwittingly consuming stopped the issue immediately!  I'm so glad I didn't go to my local pharmaceutical rep... er, I mean, "doctor".

I know this post is older, but I have had for nine months now my gum inflammed/swollen on the left side & feels like something is under my jaw & pain sometimes radiating into my ear. It was really bad in about August & they put me on some Flonase-but didn't help-went to ENT and he was terrible as well & said I was fine, but then diagnosed me with Neiralgia or something like that which is a nerve out of wack-i try to get a second opion, but she just looks at what the last doctor said & tries to throw me on pain meds. The thing is I'm not in pain except the area under my jaw-also seems to be a sort of white patch on my left tonsil area. I can't even chew on my left side due to my gum & hurting when I press on it. Been to countless dentists & x-rays show nothing. I was on antibiotics twice, which seemed to help the first few days but then everything went back to normal. ALso have a lot of drainage. Anyone find out what's going on-I sure hope you're still not dealing with these issues!
