I have a small hard movable lump just infront of left ear and have had it for over 2 months now. I was given three different lots of antibiotics for a parotid gland infection and this hasn't helped. Does anybody know what this could be? Is it something to worry about or not? I have an uncomfortable feeling in my left ear, cheek and neck.

I too have the same thing.... It popped up about 4 days ago only on my right side. It is definitely on my jaw bone in front of my ear. It moves with my jawbone as I open and close my mouth. It sinks back in with my jaw when my mouth is closed. You can only feel the lump when I open my mouth wide and it is also visible to others only when I open my mouth wide. My jaw had been popping a little bit for the last month or so on the right side and then I woke up a few days ago and my jaw felt especially tight so I went to open it and it felt uncomfortable and odd. I immediately felt my right cheek and noticed the hard lump about the size of a nickel on my jaw. I experience no continuous pain but instead I had random sharp shooting pains throughout the first 2 days. So sharp the second day that it interrupted what I was saying for a few seconds while I made faces in pain until the pain went away and then it was like it never even happened. Very strange.
I read through all the previous posts and no, I think most of you have this all wrong.... this has nothing to do with the lymph nodes in this area-- they are underneath your jawline and below your ear, kind of on your neck. I have had swollen lymph nodes all over my body before and actually had the ones in my armpit checked out by my doctor because I panicked and thought they might be breast cancer. But anyhow, I had the lump checked out by several medical experts including a head ER Nurse at a hospital who have all come to the conclusion that it is TMJ. For those of you experiencing a lump similar to mine, google TMJ and you will realize it strikes a cord and it all makes sense. I never thought I'd have TMJ, mostly because I am young and I do not think that I grind my teeth in my sleep. No one has ever seen me and I have never woken up doing it or anything but apparently I must do something to my jaw/teeth. I do have very vivid dreams so maybe I grind my teeth back and forth in my sleep. In any case, there's a few "home remedies" you can read about if you google them-- Anti-inflammatory meds like ibuprofen and ice packs on your jaw. It has not been giving me any pain whatsoever for the last 2 days and it seems to have decreased in size but is definitely still swollen. If I had to best describe it, it feels like a lump on the jawbone or at the jaw socket that reminds me of a bump you would get when you wacked your forehead on a table or something when you fell when you were a little kid. You know how immediately you'd get a swollen hard lump on your head that was so hard it felt like a bone? That's what my lump feels and looks like but it is like on my jawbone so it moves with my jaw.

Hope this helps somebody out there experiencing the same thing. =)

I was freaked out at first but I am re assured to read it seems to be quite common! Hmm, it must not be too serious because everyone who has said they have the same thing, would see their doctor and get back to us, never did. I am assuming and hoping the lump will go away. I think it might be ear related. This is why. Basically, my health went to the dumps when I hit 40 (female) in little annoying ways. When I just turned 41, all of a sudden I noticed I was dizzy a few nights in a row after getting up from watching tv, laying down. Didnt think much of it. Went to Victoria BC to celebrate my husband's birthday a few days later and as we were walking in the sunny but cold and windy weather, I felt like my head was in a bucket of ice and I needed a hat immediately! So we went to the mall, I got a hat and it was all okay. Well people, I had to weat a hat on my head...at work, while on walks, on the airplance, in the car, WHEN I SLEPT! Basically everywhere for seven months. That was the only symptom--when I didnt have the hat on it felt like my head was freezing cold. It started in Sept and ended about the next April. Then I started itching in my canals I remember--almost like an inner ear infection that lasted months and finally made it way to my outter ear--I dunno. It wasnt that bad until about 2 years ago when it got really annoying (when I was 43--am 45 now). I finally went to a dr a year ago and he gave me a fungicide to drop in my ears a couple times a day. It FINALLY went away, the terrible itching stopped--but without fail to this day, about 4-6 days after I stop the fungicide, the itching comes back with a passion. Then yesterday, I felt this lump just in front of my left ear where my jaw ends. Thus bringing me here. I can only think this miserable ear problem has now taken a new turn and now my lymph node is involved in the infection. Well I hope that is all it is. I told my dr about all this before and he had no answers--dont let the water get into your ears when you take a shower--thats impossible for me! And what I didnt tell you is about a week or so before this whole thing started, I went into the wave pool at Canada's Wonderland and like a fool swam under the water. The pool was packed and there were little kidding in their diapers in the shallow end. I thought the clorine was supposed to take care of those things, but I think the pool was overloaded it must have left some nasty bugs in the water that made their way into my ears. Lesson learned, and lesson hopefully paid attention to by you all! P.S. I promise I will write back and let you know where my bump is 7 days from now, but I am not seeing a dr until day 6 or unless it gets really big because they usually have no answers! Best!

Reading everyone posts make me feel better, but still i'm concerned. My son is 6 yrs old and just complained to me that his "cheek" hurts. He has about a silver dollar size lump in the same place everyone else had said, by his left ear near the jaw bone. You don't have to feel for it, its very obvious. its very tender, he isn't sick nor has he been sick lately. He has however had cancer, leukemia he was diagnosed at 21 months old finished treatment when he was 4. i will take him in tomorrow if it is still large. thanks

My doctor told me that its from a viral cold infection that is in my eyes, ears, nose and throat . yeah terrible sounding, I have pink eye as a result plus a runny nose, soreness near the ears and throat. I got little cysts near the jawbone in front of my ear and they are just now going away and its been 2 weeks. They won't break if you press them, but, it will make them worse and cause more pain. Doctor says " if you press it you might irritate it more and it will grow bigger!". Well, this was told to my son who is 11. I hope it was just to scare him? anyways there's my two cents for ya!!

Hey all...I see at least 3 different things going on in this string...people who have a small lump behind the ear (probably lymph node), people who have a small lump in front of the ear (probably something related to tmj) and people, like myself, who have a small lump on top of the ear. Hard to read as it is difficult to know which one is being talked about.

I have a small lump, the size of a small pea, that is excruciating to touch at the top of my ear where the cartalige ends right between the ear and hairline. It can move under the skin and is pretty red and somewhat hot. Not sure if the redness and heat is from messing with it or not. It started about 2 weeks ago, but went away on it's own but came back 2 days ago with a vengence. I have not been sick, but I do suffer with really bad allergies. It does not have any resemblance to a whitehead or a blackhead and my ears are very clean so probably not a buildup of wax. It is a bit scary that no one has talked about what their doctor has said about this thing. I promise I will as I have a doctor's appointment on Tuesday. Let us hope it is not something major.
