I'm LMAO because we *all* think we're "special" and unique and no one else's 'whatver' is like *mine*.  So, that said, mine has been around for YEARS.  I'm 50+ and I know I felt it when I was a teenager and thought no one else could have a weird little bump by their ear.  I have been playing with it forever and until this past weekend it has never bothered me.  Starting a couple of days ago, it went nuclear.  It feels incredibly hot and has a bruised sensation.  I pointed it out to my wife yesterday.  This morning, it has moved, lower by 1/4" or so down my face.  You know, no one knows your body like you do.  It has moved and it's still very hot and painful.  I have a doctors appointment tomorrow (unrelated but timely) so I'll follow up with what is discovered, if anything.

Kate, I have the exact same thing as you did, near the ear as well as near the hairline...different kinds of lumps but both showed up at the same time. How long did it take for yours to go away? Did you see a doctor about it? Thanks much! ~Erin

theyre glands and they may be swollen due to allergies or an illness(cold, flu ect) you have/are getting over.

Sometimes Lymph nodes can appear swollen even if you have no visible illness. They swell because they are fighting the illness and may be doing so before you even realize it. On the other hand something as small as the sniffles can cause them to swell (or harden). My daughter had a virus settle in her lymph nodal system and we never knew until her jaw (by her chin) swelled up like a golf ball. They ended up removing that small section of lymph node. Because this swelling/hardening is actually common (I have one too), I would recommend that you give it a day or two to see if it goes down/away on its own. If it doesn't, by all means go see your doctor. Better safe than sorry.

I noticed a small lump right in front of my left ear lobe about two weeks ago.  It hasn't really gotten much larger.  It is still only about the size of a BB pellet.  But it has gotten more painful.  My jaws have cracked for as long as I can remember and hurt pretty frequently.  My mother has TMJ and has had leukemia.  My paternal grandfather died of lung cancer.  And my husband is a recent thyroid cancer survivor and I am worried about my recent exposure to the radiation treatment that he received and whether that has anything to do with it.  I also have a lump in a little bit more personal area and the lymph nodes in my groin are swollen.  I am a female and the lump is on the external area of my personal stuff.  Both have been extremely painful and have made it very hard to sleep.  While I have very good health insurance, I am terrified of doctors and would really like to avoid going.  Any ideas?

This is an old post but I thought I would reply incase it helps someone. Another possibility is something called TMJ disease. It sounds terrible but it's not lol I went in search about lumps in front of my ears and this is what it turned out to be. The joint for your jaw is directly in front of the ear and it gets inflammed. I get it if I chew chewing gum. A good way to test if it's this or not is to put your finger on the lump and then open and close your jaw...with TMJ disease the lump will move or decrease in size.

The area where the lump is can be particularly painful if you have a zit there - even more so if you have a lumpy cyst (a benign small growth that usually goes away on it's own). That area just has a lot of nerve endings - so anything in that area can be quite painful.

As suggested above - do rub it gently and see if it forms a whitehead over a 7 to 10 day period. If it does (or even a red-head) then place a compost on it made with white bread and milk. That often draws out zit's - ripening them quickly and helping them to evacuate (pop without the "pop").

If it doesn't form a head and remains after a few weeks - then it's always a good idea to go and see your doctor. Not in a panic - cause it's likely just a cyst - but to check it out and make certain - for your own peace of mind.

Cysts generally do not have to be removed. Most of them are just fatty lumps that will go away on their own, in time, and present no danger to your health at all.
