Me too.  I flew from London to Barbados on Monday and my period started. I am usually bang on the day I am due which is Friday, so 4 days early.  The thing is it isn't like my usual period, its very heavy.  I can't seem to find out why this happens but would really like to know.

It's to do with radiation! The higher the altitude the more radiation:) I'm 16 and I fly for the RAF and that's why women have shorter flying hours than men because radiation effects your cells- your ovaries are a single cell therefor are more likely to be destroyed- Same with males and sperm however men are constently producing sperm so they aren't effected by it however women are born with a certain amount of eggs so it can effect them a lot more as they cannot produce anymore I went flying today and I do get really strange period cramps, also if you go flying often:( It is a proven fact that it can effect your period cycle, it's not advised for females to fly long periods of time (pardon the pun) it's not sexism it's just protecting your eggs:) I really hope this helps ladies!

Me 2!! Just been on holiday. On the way there had severe cramps not long after take off. Very very heavy bleeding followed mid flight. Then while on holiday kept bleeding but not heavy. Then on the way home same deal as soon as we take off the cramps start and I actually had to wear to forms of protection coz it was so heavy I was scared it would soak through! Cant figure out y it was so heavy and came on with flying but honestly it felt like as the plane went up my uterus was letting go of everything....! Pressure change maybe?

I am the same way. I am 27 years old and have always been pretty regular with my period. Always the day before I fly I get my period. Always. Well sometimes on the day of flying. I could have had my period a week ago but as soon as I fly let's say the next day, or a couple days later, or a week later I come on. Strangely it also happens when I have to do long car rides of about 5 hours plus. What is it?!

I am the same way I only get my period every 6 months but when I fly it happens all the time for about 5 days. Do you know why this happens?

If my period is due in the next few days and I take a flight (even if it is just an hour), I either get my period a week or so late OR I just don't get it at all - I totally skip that cycle.  Wow I am relived other people have experienced this.  My doctor thought I was nuts telling her this - she had never heard of it.  By the way - when I do not get on a plane I am so regular (every 28 days without fail).  I am now 52 and still get my period every 28 days - except if I fly and then it either disapears for that cycle or comes early/late.  This has been going on for at least 30 years.  I am not worried about it at all.  I truly think it is to do with the cabin pressure or something like that.

Even though time zones aren't natural, you still adjust your schedule to them. Time zones throw off your circadian rhythm, which throws off your hormones, which throws off your cycle.

I fly twice a year between England and another EU country. The flight is only 2 h. I also noticed exactly the same thing. Period starting within 2-3 days of landing. Wondering if the pressure changes destroy egg cells and this might be the reason? Would be great if someone conducted research on this.

I see It's been over a year, since you posted this, but curious if you ever heard or figured anything out.
The same thing happens to me, except my period and horrible cramps come the day I fly. I travel a lot 60%+ and last month i had my period 3x! I'm getting extremely frustrated!!

Well, I am looking into this myself! I will start my period as soon as we've deplaned. It's happened on about 5 occasions in the last 10 years (about every 3 times I've flown).

Wow, I see this is a definite "thing" among women of all ages. I'm here because last year July I was on a short flight (about 2 hrs) and during that time I had flooding for the first time. It was mega and unexpected. I felt the rush as soon as I stood up to disembark. Luckily I had on the right clothing (cotton lined, dark colored track pants that absorbed/hid the overflow). Pants were soaked through. Had to run to the airport restroom upon landing and change. It just happened again two days ago on another short trip. I had my period earlier in the month, so this came from nowhere. I'm 52 with semi-regular periods. This time however, I've learned of some herbal supplements that can "stopper" your period and control bleeding! I was like, "Never Again!" lol!) Shepherd's Purse + Lady's Mantle liquid w/dropper, and also Yarrow (either caps or liquid, but you must take many pills before flight--research). It still happened because I slacked off until the last minute due to stress, but it was controllable this time. Now it's heavier after I landed and I just have to re-up my supplies from health food store. But they work! Good luck ladies and yes, someone should definitely do a study about this (but then, big pharma will have to fund study, and some weird, damaging drug will come of it, so maybe not!).
