I am 36 and have only had this supposed 'rare condition' for 3 weeks and I had no idea what the hell was happening to me until I googled the symptoms and read a few research articles about SRPE and priapism etc. After reading this thread and the stories from users who have suffered from this for years, experienced clueless urologists/doctors etc. and the many trial-and-error treatments everyone here has tried my heart really drops unlike my unwanted nocturnal erections... I am currently trying some natural fixes mentioned here before I will attempt the baclofen which I have on standby after ordering online as I understand you have to give up alcohol with that which is not something I would care for unless this srpe starts destroying my quality of sleep and ruining my energy levels during the day.. I have read this whole thread and it's comforting to know I'm not alone and we can share our strategies and there are several drug-free ones id like to try first before the pharmacolgical option.. e.g. kegel exercises, jock strap, increase masturbation frequency etc.

Because I have only developed this very recently, before I even knew what it was through google I had a feeling it was REM -sleep related and neurological in origin because the first thing I noticed when awakening (other than my boner that wouldn't go down) was that I was awakening after having very vivid dreams which I wouldn't normally. they have become more sexual in nature too, probably because my brain wants to get rid of my erection. Also, I am pretty sure I know what caused this srpe, I brought it upon myself I think... I haven't read this here yet on the forum but for me it had to be due to using cocaine which i tried for the 1st time during a sexual encounter a few weeks ago shortly before this srpe started, along with 25mg of viagra simultaneously which I have been using recreationally for 2 yrs and have had no issues with before. I believe the cocaine did something to the blood vessels in my brain e.g. vasoconstriction , in the part responsible for REM sleep and it is already known to have causality with normal priapism. So, I messed up big time I think and invited this devil condition into my life. I am having an extensive 'preventative' health checkup in about a month which I was going to have regardless of this srpe which includes brain/abdomen/
pelvis MRIs, ultrasounds of kidney/bladder/prostate etc. and extensive blood tests so I will see if they find anything. I am particularly curious about any brain vascular abnormalities which have been associated with srpe in the research literature. (vascular compression ofthe basal forebrain). I wont mention this srpe to the doctor and just see what he comes up with. In the meantime I will try a few suggestions from this board, though I suspect i will have to go the baclofen route eventually. Oh dear...

Hello all!

I am a 28 year old man that has been suffering with this night time erections for the past 2 years. I would like to share with you all on how I have been trying to deal with this. I'm not going to waste my time with going through symptom or what drugs you all have used to try and cure this (as I have read this entire thread and took all these drugs mentioned too).
I got in contact with the person who wrote this article (just find his name on Linkedin) and he sent me a Doctors name who is an expert in the field. But no reply when I Emailed.

My solution,
One: take one 2.5ml Xanax before you sleep, then take one Sudafed after you the first time you wake with an erection (as taking a Sudafed before sleep may cause insomnia). If Sudafed begins to fail, then change to Terbutaline. You will need 5ml.
Second: Chinese traditional medicine. As the prostate controls nearly all of the male reproductive system, I began to too look into ways to keep the prostate healthy. As I'm living in China at present, I began to take this medicine. I took TCM for 3 weeks and my symptoms dropped to only 1 to 2 erections a night.
Third: Run, run, run...... Run until you cant run anymore. this will reduce the amount of testosterone in your body, thus reducing the need to have an erection. I hear doing weights are good for reducing testosterone, but I just hate doing weights.

I hope this helps guys!

THE CURE. Thank you MJ. Your messages in this forum changed my life. I was having so much trouble with multiple night erections. Rock hard painful and impossible to sleep. My only relief involved urination then cold water. But as soon as I started to drift off, it happened again and again. I was limited to between 3 and 4 hours of good sleep. After my body got that first rest, the dreaded erections were back. This was literally hell. I studied the condition as much as possible, reading about all of the drug treatments that did not seem to work for anyone. And finally, I came across the posts here by MJ. The first time I tried the pelvic stretches, IT WORKED. I did 5 minutes of stretching the area between my lower stomack and my junk. SLEPT ALL NIGHT LIKE A BABY. But I did not report back here immediately. I wanted to give it time. It has been about TWO MONTHS now. It works EVERY TIME. And I dont need 5 minutes anymore. Once you know how to isolate and stretch that muscle and lower back as well, it only takes 1 or 2 minutes. The blood starts flowing there and away from penis. I just do it in bed now. No need to get on floor for me. This has been a revolution in my sleep. MJ just thank you so much for coming here. I hope the medical profession finds your posts here. This is an incredible relief for me. I was really suffering. About me: early 50's. Slim athletic. I run 3 miles but about 3 times a week. Not ripped but am usually in good shape. I hope this helps other. JL

Can you please let us know the stretches which worked? Links are not allowed here but if there are videos on YouTube, maybe you can provide the keywords and the creator. Thanks.

Dear Chris,

Please take it easy. All of us on this thread have srpe and we all have our own ways of trying to deal with it. Probably there are many many more men who have srpe and have not contributed to this thread.

One of the best things to do is not to fight it and not to anguish too much because it will drive one mad. Work out a routine to wake up as soon as possible and get the erection down. I think immediate urination is the key. Force yourself to get up, quickly go to the toilet, force yourself to urinate (though it is difficult through an erect penis but gently squeezing the sides of the erect penis in quick intervals can help start the flow). For some reason urination results in the erection going down within about 3 to 5 minutes. Almost all men on this thread agree that urination get the erection down. So, right after urinating go back to bed with the thought that the erection is soon going to go down. Make sure you don’t worry because that will prevent you from falling back to sleep.

I kept a calendar next to my bed for two months or more, and found that the number of events per night varies from zero on very rare nights to 5 or 6, but usually in the middle somewhere, like two. Once I accepted and got into a routine the events seem to have gone down to one or two per night usually. Make sure you sleep nest to the bathroom. I have never tried it but you could keep a large mouth bottle next to your bed, stand up or sit on the edge of the bed and pee into it. I always go to the toilet and sit down and pee, this way I can remain quasi-asleep while peeing. Use what evber technique gets the urine flowing through the erect penis.

Worrying makes it worse, and believe me all of us on this thread could suffer from something far far far worse.

All best! :)

Chris here,

Thank you so much for your support. I managed to see a specialist in this area in China last week, I was surprised to discover that I wasn't the first person he has seen with SPRE. He says that SPRE is a condition that can be caused by anxiety or lower back problems. After looking at my lower back, he immediately said its most probably caused by anxiety. I was shocked when I noticed how much information he knew about SPRE, even more shocked when he said that it can be cured. He prescribed me with the anti-anxiety medicine called Buspar. I started taking it last week with my sleep slightly improving and feeling less drained during the day. I also found an expert in Shanghai who is also an expert in SPRE, he is renowned in China for experience with priapism, his name is Wen Ji Li. I will keep you all posted to see if I have any improvements over the next couple of weeks.

I am suffering from SRPE for 3 years, no relief from any medicine, I noticed that I usually get the really bad erection around 5 am, one solution that helped me is that i go early to bed (before 10) and by the hard erection which is around 5am, I am done with sleeping and I go running on my treadmill , if i don't exercise i will have back pain for all day, this is almost two weeks that i am doing this and I feel like a normal person again

Chris here,

It sounds to me that you may have a lower back problem that may be causing you to have SRPE, I suggest that you get your back looked at by a Doctor. I have discovered that I have chronic prostatitis, my Doctors think that this may be the cause of my SRPE, but the funny thing is that chronic prostatitis nearly always causes ED. Anyway, I'll be getting the results of a culture of my prostate fluid test tomorrow, hopefully, the Doctors will be able to find some bacteria.

All the best!
