Someone once happened if you are using calcium after the surgery, this could cause the constipation. To ignore this, she can start taking another type of calcium but she might experience some gases and indigestion as well.
What is your girlfriend’s diet like now that she has had it removed? What kind of meals is she eating, has she changed the eating habits since the surgery? I would always suggest eating lots of fresh vegetables, is raw and cooked. She should also use lots of fish and poultry, depends on what she prefers, but she should eat various kinds of food and of course, avoid fat as much as you can, and also she should eat fruit that is low in sugar, which means she shouldn’t be eating much bananas as they have the high level of sugar.
Maybe you should tell your girlfriend to consult some nutritionist about what she should eat as I believe that constipation could be the result of the non-adequate nutrition after the surgery.

I also had my gallbladder removed in December last year (2008). I battle with constant constipation. Nothing is working at the moment. I am watching what I eat. I eat considerably less then what I used to before my gallbladder problems started. I am maintaining my weight since I lost quite a bit ever since this fiasco. However, I fell bloated 80% of the time. Does any one have advise on what to use to have my tummy going again.
Kind regards,
Lené

Monday was a testing day, blood, CT Scan, X-rays... oh and of course the nurse was always right on time for those vital signs every 4 hours. I wanted to kill myself.
Tuesday was doomsday. Woke up bright and early (not that you get sleep in a hospital anyway, i found that to be ironic) for the MRI, followed by the HIDA Scan which lasted for almost two dreadful hours. After all of this, my surgeon was finally convinced that none of my ducts were blocked, and that my liver was ok. I had abnormal traces of Bilirubin in my blood which was causing me to have brown urine, one sign of Jaundice. Surgery was a blast! I went in crying, and came out crying!
Wednesday they kept me all day and night again! Couldn't complain too much though, those shots of Dilaudid right into my bloodstream ever 4 hours felt Utopian-like. :-D
Thursday I was released, and by Saturday I was great! Returned to work yesterday. I feel fine. I've eaten anything I've wanted to from Italian Ice to Pizza, Crabs, Pasta, Salad, Fruit, Ham, Soup.. prolly some more c**p I can't think of. I've noticed I don't eat a lot when I do eat, and that I pee about 5 more times in a day then I used to. I have been rather constipated though. I've always been like this. Im lucky if I poo 4 times a week. But I've seriously only gone twice since the 17th, which was the night my Gallbladder attacked my life. >:(

I was doing a search on constipation after gallbladder surgery and came across this thread. Like many others, I have tried upping fiber, fluid intake and had even taken laxatives. I find that I can have softer stools if I take dulcalax once every 3 days.. but I really don't want to rely on a laxative because I know that it weakens the bowel muscles.
This week, ( only because I had a coupon for it - so it was not for this situation!) I bought the Danactive yogurt drink. I drank one mid day and for the first time since March had a normal movement without straining. I don't know if it is coincidence or not, but I am going to keep buying and see if this is my answer.
Since I have gotten so much help just from reading the posts of others who have gone through the same thing, I thought I'd share my possible discovery ;-)
Good luck and thank you for your willingness to share about something that one would not normally talk about around the office cooler! ;-)
It sure does help to know that we are not alone in this mess.

I had my gallbladder taken out 12/00 and I had really bad diarrhea (IBS) for almost 2 yrs. I started eating right and lost 110 lbs and for the last year I have battled constipation that laxative takes about 2 days or 48 hours to even cause a BM. I hate taking laxatives b/c the gossip of using them to lose weight but that is the only way I can go after waiting at least a week to go. I have an apt with my GI dr in two days.. I am very confused on how it can go from one extreme to the other. Oh and I was told the reason why most people end up having IBS or constant diahrrea after the removal of the gallbladder is if any part at anytime the bowel during surgery it is touch it can cause the bowels to become over-sensitive to anything you eat.
Hope this helps and someone has an idea about my troubles,

Google "gutsense" and read some of his advice.

Just had my gallbladder removed. I came across an article about the constipation factor. The article stated that the gallbladder channels bile from the liver into the intestine to promote a rhythm effect that causes the intestine to move food along the intestinal tract. Without bile food just sits in the intestine until it can't be tolerated any longer and then the intestine uses diarrhea to evacuate the putrid build-up. Haven't found a solution yet but I will keep looking. Maybe bile salts will help!

My name is jason and my gf had her gall bladder out on friday 5/19 and since has been constipated. I have read that diahrrea is common post surgery and since this is the oppposite of her issues i'm becoming concerned. Can anyone shed light on this?
Hi. I had a gallbladder removed 19, July in the morning (5:30 am), I was sent home in the afternoon. I felt very sleepy and drugged from the anesthesia. The 2nd day I felt very uncomfortable: bloated and belly button discomfort. No pain though. I was constipated and googled for answers. I found your question and felt relieved that I wasn't the only one constipated after the surgery. 3rd day I started feeling better and less bloated. I started eating watermelon, plums, strawberries, peaches for the whole day. No pills or any other food. Toward the evening I was relieved and very happy. I'm feeling great and able to drive. For constipation, I would also recommend whine wine Pinot Grigio (a glass). After the glass of wine, I did it again. I feel great! I hope it will help to whoever is reading and having the same probelms after the gallbladder removal.
I am Krisha
I had my galblader removed as an emergency surgury August 11 2011.
