I just had my gallbladder removed this last Friday (13th April 2012) and I also experienced constipation.
I was told that the pain medication I had been prescribed was part of the cause, so it may be a good idea to keep out the side effects of your meds. So I had to take stool softeners and within a day or so it was resolved.
Also the bloating and gas could be a result of the surgery itself (I had mine done laparoscopic) which if I'm not mistaken that have to blow air of whatever into your abdomen? So..
And of course the food you eat will also have repercussions, I'm finding that some foods after I eat them are maing me nauseous.

Well, I'm sure glad to hear I'm not the only one having this problem. I had my gallbladder removed 8/08 and ever since then I have had nothing but trouble going to the bathroom. I couldn't figure it out for the longest time, I thought it was the diet pills I was on, but I realized I had been having trouble prior to taking them. I some times almost have to go to the ER it gets so bad. I am very physically active, I drink at minimum a gallon of water a day, and my diet consists of lots of lean protien, fruits and veggies...I was even trying to take extra fiber supplements, and those colon cleansing pills. Nothing helps me. I go for a week or more at times with out going at all. It kills me! I have even opted to drink warm salt water cause I heard that helps flush your system...let me warn you don't try it, not only does it taste horrid its uncomfortable and you really don't flush your system like it needs to. I'm at a loss. My surg was of course done laproscopic but I could swear my intestines got all twisted up some how. This can't be right or normal. :0( I wish I could fix it though, I'm only 28 I can't imagine living the rest of my life like this. :0(

Hello. My name is Eve. I had my gallbladder removed 2 days ago. I had the lapro. I finally began to pass gas today, but I'm very bloated and have not had a bowel movement. I had issues with constipation prior to the surgery as well. I'm eating puree foods such as yogurt, applesauce, cream of chicken soup but nothing is coming out. I'm miserable. Is it too soon to take a laxative?

I had my gall bladder out in 2007 and have had difficulty with constipation ever since.  I eat a high fibre diet, lots of water and have tried everything under the sun to have at least one bowel movement a week.  I tried metamucil, prunes, laxatives to no avail.  If anything they made it worse.  I looked 8 months pregnant all the time from the gas and bloating.  I HAVE FOUND THE ANSWER!!!  DRIED APRICOTS!!!!!!  Try 1/2 dozen the first time and you will go.  I keep them in the house and if I start becoming constipated, I eat a few of them and they work wonders.  They taste great and although they are high in sugar, you don't need very many.

I hope this helps someone out there 'cause I know how painful constipation can be.  I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

I had my gall bladder out in 1997! The internet was not such a powerful tool as it is today.

Since then I had diarrhea for over a year and since then, I've had constipation for years and years.

I use to use laxatives because it was the only way I could go to the bathroom!

I eat an excellent diet but it has never helped with this problem.

I'm happy to say the past 6 months I have found the answer...I use:

- drink 1-2 cups of aloe

-digestive enzymes with ox bile

-3 capsules of cascara sagrada

I hope this helps everyone on here...I feel great not using laxatives and have normal bowel movements daily.

Glad to know I am not alone and there are many others like myself who have this same issue.

My gall bladder was removed on Wednesday with a labarascopy, between  10:00-11:00 am. I was at home by 2:00 pm. Rested and walked slowly, also responded my e.mails until 11:00pm. Because they pump CO2 into stomach and give all kind of medicine with IV, constipation and blotting are normal for first two - three days. I also had a high blood pressure for first three days. I ate lots of pears and plums to fight against constipation, and walked periodically to fight against gas. I was perfectly okay by Sunday, and never took any pain killer or other medicine. I was at work on Monday, but took it very easy in my office.

I am 50 years old, I had by gallbldder removed 4 years ago in an effort to avoid what could have become cancer. I am not a medical doctor, and I am only offering my opinion on the subject for those considering gallbladder removal. Therefore, I personally would rather maybe have cancer someday than deal with the aftermath of life without a gallbladder. I have all of the conditions you mention. I have not used the bathroom for 6 weeks without the aid of laxatives... usually twice the recommended amount will correct the problem for a day or two. Afterwards, I feel fine for that day and then I start to fill up again. I have no solution to this problem, but I continue to experiment. Today starts my one week liquid only diet. I have noticed that my situation continues to deteriorate. I used to could eat something good (ribs, chicken, etc.) maybe once a week if I ate the bland vegetables and fruit faithfully the remainder of the time. This is no longer the case. Anything that I might have happily eaten before will shut the entire system down for days or, now, even weeks. Also, exercise used to help keep things working, but that too no longer matters. On those days when I am not expecting a laxative response, I still exercise for an hour and a half on a bicycle. Even worse than all of this, I feel bad all the time, and even though I exercise and eat the nasty food, I am still gaining weight. Obviously, if the food enters and does not leave the system, it is being stored somewhere. Further, travel is a nightmare. No restaurant will have the farm animal food, rocks, and twigs that someone without a gallbladder is supposed to eat. My apologies for not offering a solution, but I have yet to find one. I do not believe there is a cure for a life without a gallbladder. For me, I will never willing submit to surgery of any kind under any condition ever again. Best wishes to the gallbladderily challenged!

My wife had her gall bladder removed about seven weeks ago and is suffering daily pain an gas without any relief. Yes, things get much worse after eating anything. Seems like food just sits in stomach! Have you come up with any answers to this problem???

Many occurance could happen after the remove, such as deppresion, diarrhea or opposite, maybe sleeping problem. Calcium can cure some of them or make it more troublesome. The best is magnesium. They are like MAGNESIUM MIRACLE. You better not delay anymore.

Yes. If she just had her gallbladder removed, the anesthesia might be the cause of the constipation at the beginning. After a period of time, when she begins to be able to return to her normal diet, she will have to experiment to see what she tolerates. Sometimes, some foods will give her digestion, foods she could previously eat, while others report to eat basically as they did before gallbladder problems began. Hope this helps.

Hi, I am new to reading up on constipation after gallbladder removal. But also, if she just had it removed, sometimes the medications you are on for the surgery will give you constipation, bc the meds slow everything down. Get some stool softeners and Miralax or equavilaent into her quickly, or she will be in some immense pain when it finally comes out. Also, sometimes squatting over the toilet puts your colon in a better position for stool to come out. Sounds like an interesting feat, but if she stands on the toilet seat, squatting, kit can be done. Google squatty potty for an idea.
