Two weeks later i go back to the urologist for a follow up. They do an ultrasound, say my kidney does not look swollen and that they are 99% sure it's gone.
This past Sunday, a month after the original discovery of the stone, the pain came back with a vengeance. Went to ER. Turns out the new CT showed the stone hadn't moved at all. My urologist came by my ER bed and said we need to do surgery. The catch was that I was supposed to leave for Mexico in on Sunday, 3 days from now. She says that should be fine. Surgery Tuesday morning, stent out on Friday, fly on Sunday,
Urologist fits me in early Tuesday morning. She gets the stone and puts in a stent. I come home after surgery and I'm uncomfortable but it's manageable. About 4pm that same day the pain really starts to kick in. I take a hydrocodone and ibuprofen and another med that is supposed to help your bladder. By 4am on Wednesday morning, I am in the worst pain of my life. I call the urologist on call and he says the only thing to do if I can't control the pain is go back to the ER. So I went back to the ER for meds. They gave me Toradol through the IV and it helped. My urologist's office is right across the street from the hospital, so I was able to go over there after my ER visit. I told her i wanted the stent out. I could feel that damn thing in my bladder and i felt like it was giving me the majority of the pain. My bladder hurt soooo badly -- like 10 on a scale. So she removed the stent right there in the office -- just 24 hours after surgery. She said there was a risk that my ureter could become swollen and blocked and that they would have to do a nephrostomy (tube in to the kidney through the back) if that happened. At that point, I was ok with it, because i just wanted the stent out. As soon as she took it out, I felt better. The pain was gone. About 3 hours later though, it started up again, as bad as before. I started thinking that maybe it wasn't stent pain after all. I had read somewhere though that this can happen. That right away you may feel relief, but then the pain can come back for a few hours. Well, the pain slowly started to diminish throughout the evening -- to the point that I was even able to sleep for a few hours. I had been away already for 36 hours so sleep was desperately needed.
This morning, I feel better. Pain is not totally gone, but going in the right direction. I'm only taking ibuprofen at this point. I'm hoping with a good night's sleep tonight, I will be even better tomorrow (which is Friday). Really hoping we can still go on vacation to Mexico on Sunday.
I was pretty angry that the doctor didn't really go into detail about how bad the post op pain could be. I read some where on line that over 50% of people have "mild to moderate" stent pain. I would also add that some people have excrutiating, on your knees, pain that is WORSE THAN THE KIDNEY STONE attack. I almost considered admitting myself to the hospital so they could manage my pain. The IV drugs seem to work much better than the narcs they give you to take home. I took a percocet yesterday and I just felt dizzy and out of it -- but it didn't help with the bladder pain. The doctor did end up giving me something for bladder spasms, that I took last night. Maybe that is helping the pain too. Good luck to all of you reading! Reading these posts gave me some comfort to at least know that other folks have gone through the same thing.

HI I am new to this site, I had a 6mm stone removed 3 weeks ago by going through my penis and the surgeon put a tube in between my kidney and bladder which i will have to have removed, possibly when i see hime in 2 weeks time. My kidney area is still sore, and unless i drink on average 3 ptrs of water per day I get pain in my kidney which also results in stinging in my penis.i am waiting to see the results of a urine sample recently done, as my Doctor has put me on a course of antibiotics as she feels i might have an infection Is it also possible to get stomach pain as a result of this.
