Wow this sounds horrible. I was told that I was going to need to have this surgery done, but now, after reading this, I’m getting really nervous. My doctor keeps telling me that the procedure is no big deal and that I will be ready to go back to work in no time (I REALLY can’t afford to miss any work at the job I’m at…super stressed), but everyone on this site makes it sound like it is definitely not that easy. Funny thing is that I think my grandpa had a duplicate kidney…I sure do hope that I don’t end up with some weird mutated kidney or the two ureters like yours. It WOULD happen to me of all people though—I swear that anything that could ever go wrong medically happens to me. You know that “1%” that doctors are always talking about? Ya, THAT’S ME! I’M THE FREAKING 1%!! Sucks to be me…I hate my life!!! Anyways, I hope you had a good nurse taking care of you. I know that I have already told my wife that she better be ready to wait on my hand and foot and hold my penis as I pee straight, pure, 100% blood, since I will be busy banging my hands and head on the bathroom walls wishing I had never been born. Well, thanks for being so honest man…really looking forward to the next couple weeks.

I had the oscopy (spelling?) laser lithotripsy to blast an 8MM stone on my right side in my ureter. Woke up from the procedure in the hospital feeling aweful. Had to pee bad right away and asked the nurse to let me pee. What a mistake! That pee and all peeing for the next 72 hours was the worst pain I have every experienced. I screamed through every last pee, and as a grown man I cried in fear in anticipation of my next pee. Got a stent put in as well and pissed bloody urine for 7 days until the blood slowly disapeared (no clots coming out though). Day 4-12 the peeing pain got less and less and I feel almost normal now. Got to have that damn stent removed in two days and I am worried about that. Still have to rush to the bathroom sometimes so I dont pee my pants. Still feels like I got to pee all the time, but feels much better while sitting and not standing. Having some lower right back pain still. Weening myself off the Percocet as I am suffering some withdrawal after five weeks. Shakey sometimes and sleepless nights. BUT THANK MY MAKER FOR PERCOCET as it has made this entire experience better than it would have been. One thing stands out in this entire ordeal.....The pain has been ten times worse and lasted much longer than the doctors and nurses have said. I don't appreciate their exaggerated optimism, I want some realistic estimations.

I too had a ureteroscopy over two months ago to remove a 16mm stone. The procedure went well, no issues that I can recall (was under general anesthesia). The problems occurred right after the surgery that night with the stent they placed in my ureter. The pain was horrible, and the Vicodin prescribed didn't help and even made me vomit. This lasted for five days until I found a solution to get me through the remaking five days. After much online research, it was recommended to use heating pads on my stomach which worked wonders, and also to alternate Advil and extra strength tylenol rather than continue with the Vicodin. This made the remaining days tolerable. With the stent I also had a good amount of blood (looked like fruit punch) along with large blood clots. Now, two months later, I'm having strange intermittent sharp pain in my very low left groin (almost above the crease of my thigh). I'm seeing my urologist next month for a check up and to find out what this might be. Otherwise my lower back pain is gone and my energy levels have returned.

Something worth discussing with your urologist is taking an herb called Chanka Piedra after the ureteroscopy to help rid your kidney and bladder of any remaining debris. My father had a 15mm uric acid stone and took this herb which reduced its size and smoothed the kpjagged edges to allow him to pass it without surgery. Unfortunately my stone was calcium, and this herb does not shrink calcium stones, but it did help me post operatively with the debris. It also helps to pass tiny stones as they are forming.

I had this surgery as well and about 5 weeks has passed. The urinating afterwards was horrible pain for 3-5 days including screaming when I went to the bathroom, and crying, yes crying, for a grown man who once had pride and thought he was tough. After 5 weeks my urinating is normal but I have random mild pain in my ureter, back and bladder that comes and goes. Enough pain to irritate you, and make a great day just an average day. As far as the bleeding well that was in my urine for a week, and very heavy at first. I saw no clotting. My stent was in for two weeks. The 20 seconds and one yelp of the word ouch and it was out. I felt so much better to get that darn stent out that was rubbing my bladder and making it sore and causing frequent urination. The stent would have been more effective to be in about 7-8 days in my estimation seeing as the bleeding lasted a week. I wouldn't wish this ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy on my worst enemy. It really sucks and the whole thing front to back has been paint.

I had surgery on Tuesday to remove a stone on my left side, after waiting to see an urologist for 3 weeks and three visits to the ER. I had a 6 mm stone and I could not pass it. They were able to remove it with the basket. I also have a stone in my right kidney that I can feel moving, but hasn't caused me pain yet. Four days after surgery I was constantly vomiting and finding blood in my urine. I thought maybe it was something I drank, I had a hot tea and a hot chocolate during the day. My husband said I probably don't have an infection because I have no fever. I keep thinking of the nurse telling me to come back if I have any issues. It is now Sunday, I am suppose to return to work tomorrow and I have hardly had any sleep and feel very clammy and crampy. I was hoping to get some answers from the doctor in the morning.

What is your analogy of two big stones? I had a 7cm kidney stone and I could not pass it. It is highly unlikely that you will. I took FloMax which was prescribed by my urologist and that would not even work. A 5cm stone might be passable, otherwise the pruyeroducts above would not work. Buyer beware.

I am about ready to go through the same thing, and your post really put me at ease. Thank you.

I had a 4mm triangular shaped stone that was lodged close to my bladder. I am 66 and it was my third in about 5 years. After about 1 week the pain left for several days but came back worse. I gave in and went to a local ER which resulted in a transfer to an excellent local hospital. On the second day the stone did not pass and I was taken to the OR & had it blasted. I was released that day. It has been 4 days and aside from being very tired, I have had minor pain several times, that was easiely controlled by Tylonal 3. The stint was removed the dayd following the surgery. The doctor gave me samples of Uribel which rapidly decreased the burning while urination. The post op pain was nowhere near the intensity of the stone pain. The procedure is nonintrusive and the aftereffects are minimal. The hospital han an RN that was attached to the Urology unit. She was able to answer all my questions, explain the proceedure in simple terms, and did a great job in calming my fears.
