Hi, I've finally decided to try and get pregnant later in life. I have diabetes type 2 and have been afraid of complications. But, I think I'm strong enough now to give it a try. Is there anyone out there that can tell me about pregnancy and type 2 diabetes. Is there anything I need to know now before I get pregnant and then of course after I get pregnant. I don't know if this is a wise decision on my part, but I really feel like something is missing from my life not having children. Is there anyone who has done this who has some pointers for me. I still feel a little uncertain and if someone could share their positive experience with me that would help me tremendously. Thanks.

Hi, I fought with myself for a long time as to whether to try and get pregnant because I had diabetes type 2 as well. I finally decided, just as you have now, to go ahead and try. I first thought it might be difficult to get pregnant given having diabetes but I went to my doctor and she informed me that I shouldn't have a problem so long as I keep my sugar levels healthy. Now here's the thing, you need to get your blood sugar under tight control before you try to get pregnant. If you already have good control, you'll be okay. If not, that's the first thing you need to do. You really should see your doctor before you try getting pregnant to get you started on the right foot. Quite often you may be pregnant for several weeks before you know it. This is a critical time for your baby's development and if you your blood sugar levels are not right that could bring about birth defects in your baby. So, it is critical to get sugar levels under control before you try to get pregnant. I had no problem with my pregnancy and I'm glad I made the decision to have children. I couldn't be happier. I wish the same for you.
