I've had the same problem for about 20 years now.  I am to the point that my chest won't even crack anymore, so I am just left with the pressured feeling.  My doctor told me that it is costochondritis.  It is basically where your cartilage is inflamed.  He told me there really isn't anything that can be done about it, so I looked it up online to see if I could find something to help.  The only thing that seems to help for me (rarely and very little help) is pineapple.  I wasn't willing to pay alot of money for the shark cartilage pills and other stuff, so not sure if any of that helps.

i have had this issue for like 4 years and im 15 and i play sports all the time but it only seems to happen when i stay in a postion to long or if i turn to sharp. My doctor said it could have been a sport injury and it has been damaged and i should take it easy and cracking it could help it but dont vrack it to much and if anyone can tell me how to get rid of it please tell me.

My DO did the same trick. It was amazing. No pain for 4 days afterwards.

male, 23. i started cracking my 'sternum' over a year ago. it steadily became more and more often, then it was a regular thing. i thought it probably wasnt good for me, but i kept ignoring it.

i had a traumatic experience 3 months ago, i saw my best friend get badly injured, he died 2 days later. i kept thinking my body felt a lot more vulnerable, my chest began to hurt more about 2 months ago, i also had some bowel issues i was concerned about. i started at a gastroenterologist, thought it could be from too much vitamin D (i am deficient), and there could be something going on in my gallbladder or pancreas, etc. i started taking fiber and it helped.. i kept reading through this forum and continued to finish all 9 pages..

i declared, before even knowing my results that odds are my POSTURE had been sh*t for so long, now it really was digging in to whatever it was stuck on (costochondritis). after 2 days of standing straight, my back wasnt killing me too much anymore, and my chest spasms were lessening. the skin over my sternum is very thin, from cistic acne during my teens, i felt very concerned for my heart. when i saw the doctor he said all my organs seem fine, blood is fine, no ass cancer or anything, i then told him how id been standing straight for nearly a week, and hadnt cracked whatever was cracking. he instantly knew it was very likely costochondritis, off to chest xray i went, to be sure it wasnt a serious issue.

xray came back fine. i am fine. my spine isnt even too screwed up apparently, so i am continuing to hold good posture and slowly stretching and working out (very light). its all about regaining flexability in the chest. for so long i was hunched over, BAD. i dont quite understand how to tell when i will be "better". i am taking Aleve, CVS fiber capsules, and vitamin D.

my thought still at this point is.. will "cracking" the chest like we all love to do, HELP stretch me out back to normal? away from the costochondritis? because the posture throwing the sternum down or to the side gets it stuck to ligaments/cartilage whatever, so when i used to crack it it obviously wasnt cracking, it was ripping a bit of that cartilige. but then right back to post posture. now that im kepting myself and my chest open, will cracking help? or worsen? WTF is the cracking?

lol, thanks everyone, this discussion helped me a lot.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. It's been years of stretching my chest to get my sternum to pop. But it's been worse the last few months. Now I cannot get it to pop at all. I just feel the pressure consistantly. Also, when I rotate my back, I now hear a grinding sound which worries me. I'm hoping this will not be a huge issue. It kind of seems like I just need my sternum to pop and things will be better. We'll see.

Mine started out painless and that was about 3 years ago. It now causes deep chest pain and the feeling of needing to pop/crack it but when I try to do so it hurts too. I am so tired of it.

It seems that no one has a real tried-and-true solution so I'm only going to share my experience.  For a long time, I can't remember now if it has been years or only seemed like years, I would get the pressure built up in my chest.  I would strech my chest by arching my back and pushing my shoulders back and something would pop/crack in my chest.  It's easy to describe it as my sternum, but the sternum doesn't crack.  It can't.  Anyway, this would usually happen after sitting in one position for too long...usually slightly slouched at my computer or behind the wheel.  When i would force a "crack" it would immediately feel better.  This would happen daily, sometimes multiple times a day.  Then I'd go through periods where it wouldn't happen for days on end.  Only one time that I can think of, I performed the crack, and the pressure went away, but I was left with pain that lasted for a couple hours.  Anyway, it's been probably a year since I've experienced the problem, but suddenly it's back.  There hasn't been any major change in my workout routine or other daily routines.  The only thing that is different lately is an unusually large amount of stress at work.  Is there a coorelation?  I don't know.  This is simply my experience.  I'm going to try to perform some stress-releiving techniques and see if it helps.  But up until now, I've never been able to associate the cracking/pressure/popping with anything else.

I also have a the exact same problem. Its the worst. I work two jobs that require a lot of lifting. I'm probably just making it worse by working so much. Should I even bother seeing a doctor?

For me the cracking is amazing the pressure loosens and the pain goes away. It only lasts for about 1 night and then it is worse than it was before I cracked it the next day. Sometimes when I try to crack my chest the crack gets stuck and I feel HORRIBLE for the for it to go back to normal. I really do not suggest cracking it.

For those of you relating it to a lot of stress at work, it could be because you are spending more time in the bad position, hunched over typing. For me I'm certain it's due to posture because it began when I started sitting at a new desk that is much too small for me. Also, my chair was too short so I was really hunching bad. Correcting the chair height and standing taller as made a big difference. Unfortunately I'm stuck with the desk. You should also know that pectorals, like all muscles, need to be stretched or they shrink, pulling the shoulders in. It's one reason a lot of elderly are hunched, and also why they shrink. The pectoral muscles can be easily stretched in a door frame, leaning forward. I'd like to know what exercises promote better posture by keeping the shoulders back. As well, I'm a side sleeper and my shoulders collapse at night so I'd like to know of a brace of some sort to assist in keeping my shoulders back. One last thing. I literally had to have someone put my body into correct posture to see what it is supposed to feel like. No one ever showed me. I needed to suck in my gut more, stand up erect, and pull my shoulders back. It felt odd, but it also felt right. So ask someone to take a look at how you stand and assist you in getting into the right position.
