I'm 16, i have had this since 8th grade, so since i was about 13 or 14. i was really scared of it and didn't tell anyone unless they found out which did not end well, cuz i got the nickname toobie (tumor + boobie = toobie) and when my parents found out i went to a doctor and got an x ray and he said that i should grow out of it but it doesnt seem to be getting any bigger or smaller. when im done doing benchpress or pushups, it looks bigger to me so i dont know if it will work for me. im not sure if i want to do the brace thing cuz i dont want people to see and ask questions. plus i have told people about it and no one really seems to care but i still have self esteem peoblems like i havent been swimming in a public pool or beach in over a year. so im just glad to see that im not the only one with it.

hi,
When I was 6 I broke my sternum after a BMX accident. When that happened, the ribcage popped out sorta, so I now have this single bone pushing out from the center of my chest. It looks a lil like a pidgeon chest. Mine was due to an accident, and it gives me a serious barrel chest. I get looks, but I'm 6'5"/235 so the looks are quick and not many people actually ask. But in school, I was seriously skinny, I weighed about 170 and I was 6'5", so anytime I wore a t-shirt, you couldn't see anything except this chest bone sticking out. I guess I could get surgery and have a metal plate rebuild my sternum, but could you imagine the cost? I'd have to have a heart surgeon near incase they slip, a plastic surgeon to fix the scars...I mean we're probably talking 50,000.
Not going that route.

everybody chill, and just think of the bright side....when you're 15 and everybody is trying to be different to get attention, you don't have to try, you just get attention.

I am 13 years old almost 14 and i am noticing i have a protrusion on the left inner side of my sterdum, it isnt quite noticable when wearing clothes but when i take off my shirt it's noticable. It has been getting worse through and through i try to sleep on somthing when i go to bed to try to push it in but nothing works, i am going to see a docter soon and i mingt get surgery or get a T-Joe brace. The only thing is i am going to a bnew school this year and i mingt be an outcast with it on.

My mom tells me i will grow out of it but i know thats not true,

Does building chest muscle make it less noticable or more noticable? ?

Sincerily,

I'm 17 and I noticed that the right side of my chest was slightly lifted up more then the other side, about 1 to 2 centimeters, after football season was over. I remember smashing into someone with such a great impact he did a front flip and his helmet came off, think he broke his nose. while I was on the floor immobolized by the pain in my chest ( got the short end of that stick) and later in that year I noticed the lift. I went to some doctors but they just said they couldnt do a damn thing about it. man that got me down, I'm gonna look into the surgurery or brace and see if I can fix my chest. I feel alot better knowing that it is'nt severe. I always wanted to go at it with a sledge hammer and it made me feel better knowing other people feel the exact same way. I always felt so self conscious and being 5'11 135 lbs didn't help hide it( I lost alot of muscle mass. dont smoke weed) im built now because I've been trying to hide it but it can only do so much. thanks you guys really helped me out =]

I'm really glad that there's a place where I can tell all of you younger guys that things will be alright. When I was in junior high and high school I hated my pigeon chest. Back then I didn't really know what was wrong, the doctors didn't have much insight to offer and no one else in my family had symptoms. When I turned 19 I started to fill out, going from 155 to 185, and now you can hardly tell. Not even girlfriends have noticed. I can't recommend bodybuilding enough. By working out, your pecs fill in the otherwise empty space.

Also, if anyone makes fun of you, tell them that Michael Phelps has it too. Look it up.

If you guys wanna to talk about it my email is . I'd be happy to talk to any of you.

Dont get the brace. im 15 and i wore it for awhile. it hasent hepled too much and its uncomfortable to sleep my ribs pop out at the bottom of my chest. i have basicly bumps were my oblices meet my ribcage. it also has messed up my spine and caused some minor scioliosis. i have done research about surgey and i guess its worth it. if your insurence doesent cover it have a doctor right a note. because pectus carinatum causes your body to use more muscles to breath and cause a shortness in breath. one more thing since my lower ribs are portruding now my whole stomach area hurts when i run from it pulling on my abdominal muscles, according to my doctor

I am a 19 years old man I have a severe protrusion of the sternum. I have looked in to surgery and other options and Found none to be acceptable because they require weeks in the hospital or years until a full recovery for a condition that in my case is purely cosmetic. I personally wear lose fitting undershirts under bottom up shirts that help hide the large bulge. I also stay away from shirts that have a well known design or text on them because i have found that wearing shirts that have text make more people notice my bulge however, I am in no why shy of my condition. At school when someone notices it and says something to me i explain to them that its just bone nothing more nothing less and i prove the point by taping my bulge do demonstrate that fact that it is not a squishy "boob." I routinely goto the beach and water parks shirtless and swim with out anything hiding my bulge and only once has any one ever said anything to me about it. Some people fear that other people will call them freaks for having this bulge however I have never had this happen to me because when ever anyone says anything i just tell them it is a bone. the important thing is to satisfy other peoples curiosity in a manor that shows confidence and openness about it. You can not let other people think that it something that you are ashamed of, if you do act shy and ashamed people will bully you because of it. Also i feel its impotent to note that i am not some scary 300lb or 7' tall man every one would be afraid of messing with, I am 19 years old 5'2" and about 95lb (yes i know I'm really short and under weight) and still people do not give me a hard time because of my bulge. and if i can Live a Full and Happy Life With Out Worrying about my Bulge I do not understand why anyone else can not. It is time to accept the fact that it is part of who you are and move on with your life.

Guys I know your pain, I am a 34 year old male and i knew i was different back when i was about 12, you can't let it get to you. It really got to me at that age, i tried sleeping on baseballs to fix it!! But if you want to make it alot less noticeable just work your pecs and chunk up your chest it really helped me. I'm basically normal now, if you're lop sided like me. work one side more than the other, it'll help. Hope this helps.

hi. I'm not sure if you'll even know I've responded to you, but I just want to thank you for posting what you did. I'm a 13 year old girl, and I have a portuding sternum.I feel so alone since it most commonly with boys. you have no idea how much your comment helped, even a little bit. I have a 30A chest to begin with, so my breasts dont fill it out. so thank you.
