I have decided to get serious about my swimming. I used to swim leisurely and grew very fond of it. A friend of mine is training seriously and asked me to join him. I agreed so can you recommend some good swimming workouts? I must admit that I am not in a particularly good form.

Congratulations on your decision. Don't worry about your form. Given sufficient time and effort you will be in perfect form. You have to start very slowly and do some 30-40 of what is your friend doing. Don't show off and compete with him. There are many different types of workouts. On of the best tools are intervals. You swim as fast as you can for 30 seconds. Then you stop or swim very slowly for 60-90 seconds. That is on set. At first, 5-6 sets per session will be more than enough. Later you can add more. You can work up to 20 sets per session in 4 months. You have to keep in mind that intervals are very demanding and should not be done every day.
