I am very glad to find this Thread because I am experiencing the same problem since August this year. It first started out as Chapped lips and I started using lots of different lip Balms and buying new ones when I lost the current one. I was addicted to them and on one particular instance I used a lip Balm with SPF. My lips flared up with rashes as Pus started coming out. Once I stopped using SPF balms they the rash flare ups with Pus are not as serious but still come back. Some worse than others.
My lips seem waxy and dry and I am always reliant on the Lip Balm to keep it moisturised.
It's been happening for 3 Months so I visited the doctor. He said that Lip Balms have allergins in them for certain people so he perscribed me Emulsfying ointment, recommended me to go on a healthier diet full of vegetables, eat foods with Vitamin B or get a vitamin B complex, Avoid irritants like spicy food and Sour.
I think his advice is helping but it's not completely healed.
I also visited a Chinese herbalist doctor specialist in skin. She says that my body is acidic from consuming to many sugary foods and coffee. My herbalist told me to eat less sugar and perscribed me some medicine to help my body be more Alkaline and less acidic. I have taken her advice and I feel it has helped a bit but still not completely healed with flare ups and dependence on emulsifying ointment.
How long has everyone had this lip problem for and what have you done and what have doctors said ?
Thanks for reading I am very glad to find this support group.

Yes, My Dr gave me mupirocin and my symptoms were gone within a few days. I have since had one reoccurring incident a under a year later and used the same tube I had before and got rid of it in a matter of days
I believe it is like a staph related problem. A culture will tell you exactly and that is what I got. and a lot of people do not understand that Staph is EVRYWHERE, you can get it from picking your nose, you can get it in smaller cut and skin abrasions, but they never think that is what it actually is. so be conscious and good luck

I've had this problem for about two years now, once every few months, one time it happened twice within two weeks (bleh). One thing I've noticed that's different about my condition that I haven't seen mentioned before is that the roof of my mouth becomes sort of "raw" at the start of this also. Not painful, but it tingles and feels different than when I'm not having this outbreak.

Hi there I know this is an old thread but I thought I would add , I have swollen sore lips , then they weep and crust really bad , top and bottom lip which makes eating impossible.they last about two weeks fall off and then the next day it all starts again , it is relentless , embarrissing and soul destroying . All the symptoms pointed to herpes simplex 1 so I went to the Drs and begged for swabs to be taken as the condition is unbearable. Today I was told there is no trace of herpes 1or 2 in the blood work or swabs and no trace of bacterial infection of any kind , the dr was baffled and has called me in on Monday to seek a diagnosis, I am thinking maybe food allergies ? As I have had 3 courses of antibiotics and antivirals but to no avail , will keep updated as I look like a crusty aweful mess at the moment :( wish me luck X

Sounds like you could have the same thing as me. I also think it's allergies. I have been putting antiseptic cream on it and taking natural antihistamines and it helps. I may have Pollen Fruit Syndrome (also known as Oral Allergy Syndrome or OAS), maybe you could have the same thing? Also possible allergy to lip products?

I have the exact same problem. It never happened to me before until I got extremely ill and since then it will not go away. My doctor has no idea what it is and I've tried Blistex and Carmex.

A holistic healer? You mean a wallet biopsy?
The problem with those folks is they treat made up diseases with completely unproven methods.

Hello! I have the same problem. It started after I drank wine straight from the bottom one night. I am not sure if it came from this or something else because I've drank before.

Have had the symptoms listed here for a month, had tried neosporin and Vaseline, but it was getting worse, not better. I read all of the posts here and determined the most frequently lauded treatment was fungal infection cream. I had some yeast infection cream at home, so I put it on and around my lips at bedtime that night. The next morning they were still cracked and flaky, but the oozing was gone and no new cracking or bleeding that day. Today, there's active healing going on and my mouth only feels half on fire. It looks 75% better than before. I'm hopeful for continued healing and I'm going to continue the yeast infection cream for 7 days(the regimen listed for yeast infection) and will update again after that. This much healing in two days after 4 weeks of suffering is amazing. I wish I had learned about this sooner, but I had assumed it was bacteria or B vitamin related and tried treatments for those things for far too long with no results.

Hi. Please let me know how that goes. Wish you all the best. I have reason to believe that this is a fungal infection because I had tried antibiotics and it didn't help. SO it isn't a bacterial infection. So I have been using anti-fungal cream and that has helped alot but my lips are still not even close to 100%. They haven't swollen up in weeks but are extremely dry. I will continue to apply the anti-fungal cream twice a day and see how it goes. Oh and I am also taking B-12 supplements because I heard that helps!

Now over five days into this treatment and 90% healed. No bloody cracks anymore. All that remains is flaky scab skin around my lips, and that's scrubbing off quickly as it heals!

So 7 days later I still had flaky itchy lips. The OTC antifungal was not doing enough, and I had a dentist appointment. My dentist prescribed mycolog (generic is nystatin that other folks talked about on here) and in 24 hours I was 100% healed. I definitely recommend getting the mycolog cream on day 1 whenever possible.
