Hmm that's interesting. Mine started after I probably drank the most amount of alcohol in my life (half a bottle of wine). But it had been sitting in my parent's garage for about 4 years and I drank it straight from the bottle. I think there was some fungus on the bottom that came in contact with my lips.

I drink quite frequently, so hard to tell!!! I have noticed that I get these bumps after using certain lip balms, and yes they tend to peel badly afterwards. I'm yet to find a connection to the ingredients. It doesn't happen if I just use shea butter and lanolin or vaseline.

Can I just ask .... does everyones problems tend to flare, or are they pretty constant?

The redness around my lips never seems to disappear. The dryness, peeling, chapping of the actual lips vary, but are mostly pretty atrocious.

I have ALWAYS suffered from extreme chapped lips..pretty sure it is because I cannot get my tongue off of them (I hate that dry feeling). I have had the cracks in the corners multiple times and they have taken some time to go away, but this particular incident with the redness AND the cracks AND the tiny blisters around my lips which in turn went to oozing and crusting over and then flaking off first happened about 2 years ago and I couldn't shake it for MONTHS..that is when I finally threw in the towel and went to the Derm and got a Rx.
I have been trying to be VERY diligent to apply Vaseline as soon as my lips start getting that redness around them, which I still feel is just my regular chapped lips bothering me because it happens if I'm out in the cold for too long or seasonally when I am drying up.

I know what you mean. Sometimes I wonder whether I kicked the initial infection (the skin around my lips no longer flakes and crusts) and the reminence is just very irritated and volitile skin caused by chapping.
I took accutane sometime ago and the moisture has never returned to them.

But .... If it really is inflammation / irritation caused by the dryness, then surely a steroid should have effect?
I've been using my latest script (emovate ointment) for 14 days now without any real improvement.
The derm said I need to use it for as long as it takes to get the dermatitis under control, and then a little while longer to treat the deeper skin tissue.

Obviously this is not a prospect I'm comfortable with given that it's doing jack for me so far!
I'm going to give it another week and then head back to him for a rethink.

Is your worse when eating? Mine gets particularly red, especially when eating anything spicy.

I can't say they do get worse when eating however if already inflamed then spicy food tends to irritate

Hello everyone, over the course of time you can become allergic to certain products. I have dry and chapped lips and water seeps out lip line . I think im allergic to lipstick so not used it for a while. Lips are ok. Same with mascara and eyeliner. My eyes go big puffy very itchy crusty. I don't wear eye make up & problem went. Waiting for doctors appointment to see a dermatologist, bet im allergic to makeup. Some people are allergic to beeswax. Be careful what you use. Good luck xxx

I actually have a patch test booked for tomorrow. Will have the results on Tuesday.
Really looking forward to getting to the bottom of it ... at the very least I will be able to rule out one possibility.
The doc says that steroid resistant dermatitis like mine, is usually a contact reaction.

Will provide an update once the results are in.

This happened to me after I wore my retainers that weren't being cleaned properly or an old chap stick/ lipstick. Doctor said it was an infection and prescribed me cephalexin. Within a couple days I could already tell the Medicine was working, the redness started to fade and my lips felt less dry.

Nickel allergy, but not much else. Currently test driving protopic.
Only on day three so nothing to report as of yet.

MANGO! i have been having the same problems as everyone and after staying up all night researching I am convinced that i'm allergic to mangoes. google mango mouth.

i have symptoms that seemed like an allergic reaction but i couldn't rememeber eating anything out of the ordinary and i've never had allergies in the past. and then it clicked that i had eaten mango slices out of the skin the day before both times this reaction flared up.

i haven't been clinically diagnosed but i am almost positive this is what's happening. going to the doctor today
