You are completely correct, took a college course on massage for fun and every teacher/ professor said that reflexology is a complete scam. It may heal you through removing stress, but then again so would almost any massage.

Reflexology has been around for about 5000 years. If it was a scam, it would not be around today. The reason a non-quack doctor or medical practitioner does not promote it is because it actually heals people and can put them out of business. Also the pharmaceutical industry can lose lots of $$$$$.

Just because something has been around since people thought that God covered the world with a blanket, doesnt make it valid. They also believed it was possible to spin straw to gold, virgin's can give birth and that people rise from the dead.
Any double blind study on reflexology shows it is no better than a placebo (which by the way was administered by the medical profession until the 1060's as a valid way of helping people). These days a placebo would still be used if statistically it was better than say antibiotics. I know if I had an infected leg at the early stages and my prognosis was that is spread and had to be cut off (like it did 5000 years ago...if we are going to use that as a baraometer) and my choice was reflexology or aniobiotics, I'd chose antibiotics. Are you seriously telling me you wouldnt? If you think that its OK then to use reflexology for other things then you're just happy paying money for placebo, which statistically works better than nothing, so fair enough.

Reflexology is a scam, as a currently practicing massage therapist i can tell you this. If you are the person who benefits from reflexology in some way, don't get robbed, for pretty much the same price you can get a full body massage...including feet...which is undeniably more effective at increasing bloodflow, promoting mental and physical relaxation, and increasing ROM depending on the stretches you use(which is all massage does) and as I say "ALL" keep in mind those things are more than enough to actully inprove quality of life for most people which is what its all about anyway. The reflexology chart is a load of garbage. So is the meridian system. So is energy work(are you really offering to pay me to use the force on you for an hour?mmkay). So is acupressure and acupuncture. Your chakras dont exist and if you use a Chiro make sure he/she knows what theyre doing or they will f**k you up. The real wonder here is our minds and bodies and what they are capable of. Parts of the body are connected to the parts of the body they are connected to. Period.

I'm a reflexologist and have seen many people benefit from reflexology, from things like digestive conditions, sciatica, pain relief, help aid sleep, anxiety and much more. Reflexology brings the body back to balance and doesn't claim to cure. It's an extremely relaxing treatment and sends clients into an almost hypnotic state. My clients are always very happy and so I will continue to do my work knowing that it is benefiting people. Perhaps you could try some complementary therapys yourself and then review them? I think you'll be surprised. :)

I have a Phd, a scientific mind, and am highly sceptical of snake oil cures. This past week I was in Penang, Malaysia, and allowed myself the luxury of body massage including reflexology. The masseur started with my feet and began to tell me I have low levels of both cholesterol and blood pressure. Both correct. Then he said my left ear is not as good as my right ear. Correct. He said my kidneys, liver and intestines are dry due to lack of adequate hydration repeating what my GP has been telling me for years. He also said my heart is OK but I should exercise more, repeating what my cardiologist told me a few months ago after an expensive stress test. My Chinese masseur didn't offer me cures for cancer...but I am still stunned how he could have correctly found what he did by just feeling his way around my feet. I now think Western science should not so easily dismiss this old Eastern practice. There is something there to be looked into with an opem mind and without pre-judgement.

Of course, the "testing" of Reflexology in a medical sense could be flawed in 3 ways.'
1. Who performed the work? What was their background/skill level?
2. What body part was used? Reflexology is done on hands, feet, face, scalp, ears, belly and spine in our clinic.
3. How were the subjects eating? Was the test group doing anything besides reflexology?
There are too many random "controls" to get accurate scientific data, and most hospitals don't spend money researching Reflexology, or anything out of the realm of allopathic medicine.
So, if it is a scam...I've been scammed!
I'm 42 and look 27. My whole family has health problems, and I do not.

I've attended two talks on Reflexology and from what I heard, both times, the whole thing sounded like a load of rubbish. At best it's probably good as a relaxing foot massage. Some people in the audience appeared to be convinced by what the speaker was saying. Well OK if that makes them happy so be it - but not for me I'm afraid.
