I stumbled across this topic today when researching possible food allergies for myself, and I had to reply....

I am a 39 year old woman who has had an anaphylactic allergic to reaction to Tylenol ever since I first took it around 10 years old.  I have dealt with doctors refusing to believe my allergy could exist my entire life, and I have to advocate for myself every time I go near a doctor's office or hospital.  If I accidentally take a cold medicine with acetaminophin hidden in the ingredients I react within about 15 minutes and usually runs its course within a couple hours.  I've gone as far as to make sure my kids don't receive tylenol in case they inherited this weird allergy :)  My point is that the allergy is real and I've learned the hard way that your best bet for avoiding the symptoms is to be your own best advocate.

I'm finding that tylenol is causing me the gi symptoms you discribed. i never made the connection until the last time i took it, and w/in 15mins i was running a fever, and it felt like my gi tract was turning to liquid. i was violently nauseous and in a great deal of pain. between bouts all i wanted to do was sleep. after about 12hrs it seemed to gradually pass. it was the same reaction that i've had to codiene, and that is on my allergy list. tylenol will now be on that list as well. thanks for your post because i thought i was nutts until i read it and made the connection and put it w/ past episodes.

I am allergic to actemenephin as well. My son has a peanut allergy, actually all tree nuts and eggs (egg whites) allergen in eggs is only in the whites. My daughter is severely allergic to watermelon and kiwi. Very interesting. I now want to research similarities. There is a pain medicine out there, it is all my doctors prescribe at the naval hospital. Vicoprofen, same as vicodin, but 250 mg of ibuprofen and 7.5 mg hydrocodone. Comes in other strengths. Some younger doctors have never heard of it. They always pull out phones and look it up. me at the navy hospital, it is vicoprofen, same as vicodin

Tylenol gives me flu like symptoms in which it makes my whole body ache. Last time I had it I got super sick where I couldn't swallow, speak, or even move my limbs. Got an ambulance ride to the ER and was feeling better after a couple bags of fluid. Any doctor I see I make them put in my chart that I am allergic to Tylenol. When I had surgery and more currently a small fracture to my sternum, I just asked for Ibuprofen only.

I guess I sort of have an allergy to Tylenol....my liver enzymes go up when I take it w/my pain medication.  My stomach and/or liver swells and I end up at the ER for help.  I just started pain mgmt and then gave me percocet w/tylenol....guess what happened?  Back to the ER last night.  Has anybody else had this problem?

Me too! I get a severe headache and start to vomit with Tylenol (confirmed after a minor surgery when someone didn't spot acetaminophen in the IV, and they had to flush me out. I also am allergic to Kiwi and Walnuts. Embarrassing, as my Father owned a Walnut Ranch, and would NOT believe that I could not eat walnuts.

Hi, my son was complainling headach last night and I gave him Tylenol and he developed rash

in the morning and he told me he is allergic to tylenol. I  couldn't believe at first since he took it many times But then I realize every time he had fever since he was baby he developed

rash. It could be Tylenol caused rash since I always give him Tylenol to lower the fever. I don't know what to give him if he has pain or fever next time. No doctor ever told me about Tylenol allergic problem.

Thank you very much to all posters for this information.

I think that I am allergic also to acetaminophen.  I think that if affected my eyesight.  The next time that I am tempted to take it, I will remember all of these posts.

The last time that I took it, I developed severe pain on the left side of my body with a severe headache (so much pain and all through my body).  I couldn't wait for it to wear off.

I also have skin lesions (hard) all over my trunk, and now, starting to develop on my legs.  They look like little round warts.  I always use to have the most beautiful skin and now this.

My eyesight problem is severe.

I started taking tylenol for serious pain and spine problems after a serious car accident.

I will avoid acetaminophen and will not buy it anymore or have it in the house; that way, I will not forget nor will I will be tempted then to take it.

My son had a severe rash on his body and he developed a sore throat and mouth sores.  The dr. did not say anything about an allergy to Tylenol.  The next time he took acetaminophen he started breaking out immediately.  My son did not make the connection until he took it one more time this past weekend and had the same reaction.  He won't be taking it anymore.  I will advise him to look at the labels of everything he takes for a headache.

Recently I took 2 Tylenol in caplet form and had an anaphylactic attack, never happened in my life, my cousin who is a nurse practitioner gave me Benadryl , I have taken acetaminophen before but was curious if it is the caplet itself I might have a reaction to ???

I think my 6yr old boy is becoming allergic to Tylenol. He is allergic to NSAIDs. Are there other alternatives to either NSAIDs or Tylenol? I'm devastated.

It makes getting pain relief tough! You might bring it up with your son's Pediatrician as there are other medications I've been able to take for pain, like Tramadol. There are also natural remedies available at health stores like Whole Foods.

My son also has an allergy to Tylenol/Acetominaphen. I figured it out when he was just over a year old, now going on 1, after three incidents that grew in severity each time. He would break out in hives and wheels all over his torso, upper arms, neck and face about 20 minutes after ingestion. The reaction would last for hours after and really tire him out. Luckily it never affected is airway or breathing. The local doctors being doctors did not believe me until he was tested under controlled conditions in a hospital when he was about 5. Man, did they jump when the reaction hit. The "crash cart" appeared out of nowhere but was thankfully not needed.

We give him Ibuprophen aka Advil for fevers and as a general pain med. Works well with no side effects for him.

He is also allergic to octocrylene, an acitve ingredient most sunscreens. Not sure if they are connected in any way.

This is well documented. In my case is part of Asthma and the condition is called Semter's Triad. I personally have to avoid Tylenon, Ibuprofen and Aspirin. The worst I experienced so far was with Aspirin, my runny nose was literally like an open hose last time I took one several years ago. From time to time I may take a Tylenol if I have a persisting headache, but I know what comes after... so I try to avoid these drugs no matter what.
