Everyone here needs to go out and buy very thin plastic bags about the size of your hernias and fill it will ice, put it directly on the hernia and it will reduce the swelling greatly for a few hours allowing you to do more things. My doctor told me it will take up to 8 weeks for all the fluid to be 100% gone but he also said he could drain it but my scrotum would just fill back up a few days later.

Ice is the only thing that works here so I suggest when going to bed sleep on your back and lay a fresh pack of crushed up ice onto directly on the swelled area!

I had an open inguinal hernia repair about 10 days ago. The first couple of days were very painful but little scrotum swelling. Third day, my scrotum swelled up with fluid and was about triple normal size. No pain, just uncomfortable. Doctor said this was very common and suggested keeping the scrotum raised at night by wearing briefs instead of boxers. In the morning the swelling was greatly reduced, but it just came back again after I was up for a while.
Finally at day 8 or 9, the swelling just went away.

Well it has now been just over 2 months since my lap. hernia repair. Swelling is now mostly gone but I still have pain in area at the top of and just above the scrotum. Surgeon says this can be a nerve (ilionguinal or iliohypogastric) problem and the best course is just to wait. Alternative is to cut the nerve which can cause numbness and other complications. Think if I was doing this over, I might of had surgery with open procedure.

I just has Open Surgery for an inguinal hernia 6 days ago. Like many of you I am having horrible pain in my left testicle. I noticed nothing the day of surgery and was even able to walk around, however it was crippling the day after surgery and I could not even stand up without wanting to double over. I am now on day 6 and am able to walk around and sit, however, I have to adjust myself when sitting or my testicle hurts bad and if I stand for any length of time the pain begins to increase. its hard to tell if its the testicle or the cords connected to it that hurt as my scrotum is still brused but I think its the cord causing most of the pain as if I touch it outside the range of the testicle it causes a ton of pain. I might try wearing briefs to see if the support helps. I dont have a follow up till next week but I hope this pain goes away before then. Its unbearable at times!

Had open surgery two weeks ago for a very large hernia. Have to wear an athletic supporter. Fluid sac still in the scrotum. Surgeon said it might take two months to settle down. If not I'll have to have an ultra sound and possibly see a urologist. The surgeon's preference is to let nature take its course. After about 12 days I was pain free. Just the swelling is annoying. Surgeon suggested heat, moist, to help move things along.

Hey I think most of the bruising and swelling that you guys are experiencing is completely normal. I had open left inguinal hernia repair surgery with mesh last tuesday, and was in a lot of pain weds and thurs but went back to work fri and sat. I was very worried that I'd overworked the area because only starting on sunday did I get swelling and bruising, and mostly on my left testicle and it does seem swollen to about 3x the size of my right one like people are mentioning. And the bottom is definitely hard and bruised. But it's certainly not an unbareable pain, especially if you wear close-fitting underwear (definitely recommended, makes a huge difference), and I went to the doctor today and he was very pleased with how I was coming along, saying it's completely normal to have swelling testicles and that the hardness is simply fluid that collected and that it might take up to a month for everything to return to normal. So don't worry so much about it. Take care!

Good to hear that it is normal. Well to update everyone... The testicle swelling has gone down some for me after a week and a half... but now the coord connected to the testicle (vas deferens) or at least the path of it is swollen pretty bad and is hard as a rock. The pain is not terrible but if I touch it it does hurt. Did any of you experiance this as well? I go in for a follow up Thursday... I will post what I find out for everyone.

Hey all,

Just found this site. Im actually relieved at how many people have been having this problem. It just confirms what th docs are saying: Its normal post-op.

I had open "tension free" inguinal hernia repair five days ago and Im in more pain now then the morning after surgery. My left testicle is swollen about three times normal size and bruising. I was worried at first because I thought it might be a sign of internal bleeding pooling in my testicle due to gravity. Its hugely painful and I know pain: I was in a bad motorcyle wreck and shattered my entire face.

One thing Im also getting is lower back pain and I've never had that before at all. Also experiencing pain in my side and some abdominal pain about two inches above the incision site. Anyone else experienced that????

Anyway, I can handle the pain. My biggest concern was permanent damage or perhaps a life threatening infection but it looks like the swelling and severe pain is normal.

had surgery last Friday.... having similar issues as most of you.. surgeon indicates that this typical scenario following this type of procedure...It will dissolve after time.. all swelling around the scrotum and penis is fluid and will eventually go away..

Misery loves company...i had Laproscopic bi lateral indirect hernia repair 2 days ago. Both sides wer indirect hernias vs direct hernias. Inderect hernies are more complicated and take longer. the hernia has to be disceted from the inguinal canal testicular cords and not create damage. I to have swelling on the left testical and the cord hurts. Tis sucks cause I don't like my balls feeling like they were kicked. But it is what it is. Now I have to find te quickets why to releive the pain and reabsorb the fluid in the sac. I hope my testical doesnt atrophy. Iv'e also always had these varicose vein sac insode my left scrotum but never bothered me. I think all this damage was done when i was very small some how. Can i icee my testical or not Do I apply heat or ICE. Switch off? I think I;m also feeling the helicle titanium tacks used in the mesh hold down, Long tem hopefully that goes away to. Also, I havent MOVED my bowel yet and just starting to flatulate. I;m eating. Hope I can take a dump soon. Any thoughts? By the way gents. i feel your pain.

This forum has been extremely informative to relieve my fears after surgery as I have the same post -op effects as most here.I had to have open repair because I also had several adhesions that needed repaired. My biggest concern is a widespread numbness from the incision to my scotum, and am curious if anyone knows if this numbness is temporary or could it be permanent.

I just had open inguinial hernia repair for the second time. First time, I had no testicle swelling or bruising at all. I wonder if the hernia was not properly repaired the first time. This time, I do have large left testicle with bottombruising and apparent excess fluid in the scrotum about twice normal size. I'm going for a follow up next week. I'm day three and am moving around much better, but still pain at hernia site upon standing more than five minutes. The first two days were very painful probably due to the muscle tissue tearing. I drank lots of muscle milk to see if the protein would help repair it faster. Seems to be getting better faster than last time I had the surgery. I hope the scrotum swelling is normal and goes down. It seems pretty normal based on everyone's comments. I'll post again after visiting the doc.
