To continue my earlier post, it has now been about 8 hours and I still can't take a fully deep breath (or lie down, I've also discovered).
I took 2 TUMS, another anti-gas pill, and an Advil within the last few hours but no change. Now I'm starting to worry, because it's midnight and I can't lie down to go to sleep.

Hello,
i have been reading the posts, and I want to let everyone know about my expierience. I was 3 months pregnant when I started getting a pain under my left breast. It wouldnt go away... it hurt every time I took a breath. I thought I may have pulled a muscle or something. So i ignored it for the day. That night I couldn't sleep, so I called the advise nurse. I was told that I should got to the ER asap. when I was tested for Blood Clots, sure enough that is what I had. They started in my leg and passed through to my lungs... which is called a pulminary embolism. It can be fatal... if you are pregnant you have a larger chance to get Blood Clots..... I would go to the emergency room asap... They will put you on blood thinner. My pregnancy turned out to be great and I had a healthy baby girl... PLEASE DONT IGNORE THESE SYMPTOMS!

I am having that pain as we speak. I found this site, hopefully it helps other people out. This has been the closest to describing it.

I had the condition described in the link above when I was a kid and could never explain the symptoms to my mom - and she never took me to the doctor. It's a good thing it's common and not life threatening.
What I'm experiencing now feels different - the pain is not near as sharp, but it's still very painful. This pain is about 3 inches from being in my left armpit, beside my breast. It hurts to breathe. I woke up at 3 this morning with terrible shoulder pain (which has almost subsided). This is my second day with these symptoms. I just had an EKG in August (yearly physical) and it was fine - I was considered to be healthy by my doctor. Now, three months later, I think I'm trying to convince myself that I'm not having a heart attack, but that's my fear. I'm 40 and a smoker... I should probably see my doctor.
I appreciate all of the helpful posts and hope that all of you feel better now or soon.

I am 13 years old and turning 14 in three months. I have been getting a shortness of breath randomly and a sharp intense pain under and even on the side of my left breast as well. I have been looking for answers but I have found none. I haven't told my mother about my pain yet. I am even on my "time" but it stills happens even when I am not - I don't know if I should be scared but I kind of am.

I have been experiencing the exact same symptoms. I'm still not sure if it's my heart. I went to the er and the acting physician in the er acted like I was stupid. So fear that it was my heart I'm trying to quit smoking. I really thought I was ALONE in this but found this site and realized it's not just me. New thoughts and diagnosis would be great.

This woke me up tonight, (the sharp pain on left side when breathing deeply) so I took a deep breath, as one user suggested and it went away.

I too felt this pain for about 8 hours since last night. I'm a hispanic female and am 20 yrs old. I've also had this pain since high school. I've just learned to live with it but its never lasted so long. I feel the pain underneath my left breast. I saw a doctor when I was in high school but he had no idea what it was and just said that it was because I played a musical instrument and held my breath too long or prolonged it too much. I've given up on the cause but it sucks living with this pain. This is the longest its hurt though, it normally would just be about 5-10 minutes and it had also not happened for a long time already.

Okay this is what it is most likely.
For some reasons your lungs don't have enough lubricant in that one spot. Because there isn't enough lubricant, the areas are rubbing against one another when you take in a deeper breath. Causing tension and irritation. Eventually it will go away, if it doesn't after a few days, then go to a doctor.
When it happens to me, it can last either 30-60 seconds or an hour or so. Right under my left breast, between 4-5th intercostal spaces. It just depends and I don't get it. I'm 22 and in just dandy health, and it's been happening to me since I was about 14, a few times a year, irregularly. Nothing precipitates it for me. It happened to my stepdad a lot when he was younger and stopped when he was around 35 - no idea why.
Things you can try:
slowly inhale little by little (and exhale a little if you need to) and continue to inhale until it hurts too much. Your lungs will get used to it and it will make you hurt less and feel a little better because it's really frustrating when you can't take a deep breath.
Get up an walk around. I don't know if it has anything to do with it. But I was laying in my bed, sitting up for an hour without improvement, but 5-10 minutes after I got up and started doing other things it suddenly went away.
Don't get anxious. You'll breath more and harder and it will hurt more. Your pulse will increase, you'll start sweating, and get upset and there's no reason to.
If it's going on for hours and hours, sit up and grab onto a pillow right in front of your chest. It still hurts like a mother, but at least you have something to squeeze and lean into.
Ibuprofen may help (I don't know if you can take that in pregnancy?)
If it starts radiating or becoming constant (not just when you take a big inhale/exhale) then call your doctor.
Apparently it's a semi common thing. Hope this helps!

You know it is sad that so many females have this problem. I am 61 and started having this sharp pain in my left breast only - lower outside area only about five or six years ago. It really frightened me and I thought immediately of a heart attack. I have gone to the ER and once called an ambulance because it hurt so badly. They found nothing. I have talked to three doctors (all females) and they have offered nothing. They just moved on. I am currently experiencing this pain (been 7 hours now). IT HURTS. Sometimes I wonder if it was a pain men experienced if someone would find out what is going on. I am really sorry to see that so many young women are experiencing this problem; but it does help to see others having this problem - I least I don't feel alone any more.
I did have chocolate last night. I will try the tums and the deep breathing. Thanks for the hints - I for one really appreciate your bravery in speaking out.

Please be careful if you are trying to self diagnose these symptoms. Last month I had the exact same symptoms outlined on this website. I was sure that it was nothing but went to my GP just to be careful. Turned out I had a pulmonary embolism - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulmonary_embolism Thankfully it was caught early and I am now on the mend. If undetected it could have been a very different story. So please don't be complacent!
