I've never been diagnosed with any heart condition, but I've had that sudden sharp pain under my left breast since I was a teenager.  I've found it very helpful to relax, take shallow breaths and ask someone to pound on my back, in the painful area, with a steady, firm fist until it goes away (yeah, like burping me!).  I strongly believe it's gas, even though it's scary that it ONLY occurs where I know the apex of my heart is.

BURP! Burp as much as you can. You have built up gas! The more you belch the less pain you will feel!

I get this and what helps me (not all the time) is lay flat on my back and take deep breathes.

I thought I was the only one! The pain comes on and I just have to take a little breath and breathe out, and add a little more breathing in every time until I can fully take a complete deep breath and it is gone. Just a couple nights ago it was really bad, when I finished the last part of the deep breath, it popped. This time is was a lot harder to get rid of and it hurt way worse. Does yours ever pop?

Yes, it'll be a common occurance. I've been dealing with this pain my entire life and it does hurt like crazy but at the same time I have suffered no lasting ill effects due to the pain that I am in every so often, it will be hard and painful to breathe, it will sometimes wake you up in the middle of the night, my suggestion for dealing with it, DO NOT take a deep breathe and hope it will go away, that's what I used to do as a small child and now if I do that while having an attack it just makes it last longer and it makes it more intense and painful for me, I have had an attack last several hours before when I was still in high school and I had to walk around hunched over incapable of breathing because I tried to inhale deeply to get rid of the pain and it failed to work for it. My advice to you is to lie down on your back, breathe slowly til it seems to start to fade away, when that happens then you can start breathing deeper until you are once more breathing normal, once you are breathing normal again without any sharp pain in your chest from it then experiment with breathing deeper if you experience any pain from this then stop and go back to the previous step for a few more breathes and try again. Hopefully this has been helpful to you.

Search *Pleurisy* on wikipedia or on google to see if this is your problem.
If its on your chest kind of going toward the armpit
It could be this, this can be treated with anti inflamtory medication and pain releivers

I have had this pain my whole life. It is related to breathing problems. What this is is when you are breathing, you diaphram fills up, slightly rubs the bottom of your lung which in turn over fills thus bumping into the bottom of your heart. This sends a shock to your heart thinking it is out of rythem thus causing the shock affect. This can cause pains to shoot from under your breast through your chest over shoulder or your neck and the deeper you breath the worse it feels. SOLUTION: take small slow shallow breaths and exhale slowly through the pain. the faster you breath the worse and longer the pains will last. You need to go to your doctor and have an xray taken of your thoratic muscle to see if it inflamed from bronchitus, allergies, a cold, etc/ they will prescribe steroids and a anti inflammitory drug. If your pregnant that is just the joys of your joy pushing your internals all around!

I'm 15 years old and I just experienced this pain for the first time, under my left breast above my ribcage. The pain was sharp and like a stab, I tried to breathe in to relieve the pain but then I felt the sharp pain. I held my breathe because it hurt so bad. It definitely felt like if I inhaled something would pop there. I'm really scared, will this be a common occurance?

This can be serious to your health after 10 minutes. You have to take deep breaths at least every 5 minutes to expel the carbon dioxide build up in the bottom of your lungs. If this is happening more than once a week you need to see a pulmanologist to check for lung or heart conditions. It could be as simple as a swollen thoratic muscle or it could be thoratic endima. Sorry if they are misspelled. I have asthma and I have a reason why my hurts so you need not dismiss this it is lasting more than 7 minute that is what 3 of my doctors have told me.

My wife is experiencing the same thing you are describing.  She thought she was having a heart attack.  Thank you for all the responses they really helped.  She is 6 and 1/2 months pregnant and took some tums, something for acid reflux, and dialed out a huge BM.  For all of you that don't know a BM is a BOWEL MOVEMENT.  Those two words are awesome and relieving.:-D

Hi there,

I am 30 years old (female) and have had the problem for 6 years (I don't know if it related to being pregnant, as I have never had children). I was referred to a cardiologist, who did all the necessary tests, but nothing was found with my heart. The cause is still unknown - and I do still get it. The pain is awlays in my right chest (sometimes high up, sometimes below my rib cage). The stabbing pain is so intense, I go dizzy and need to breathe slowly and shallowly to deal with the pain, increasing my breathe intake very slowly back to normal. The attacks last about 5-10 minutes. Upper body movement sometimes brings it on, sometime though I can be perfectly still and it starts.

is it right between your breast and underneath your armpit if it is then i get them all the time along with ones in my right leg, i have tried several things that has helped i mean it really feels like you cant breath like there is a cap on how much air you can take in not to go over a certain amount or it hurts really really bad 1 .bending over forward and raising your affected arm out over your head while bending over , just stretching, 2. potassium sodium and calcium levels are out of whack either drink an oj or take a packet of mustard stick it right underneath your tongue yes mustard it has some minerals in it, see here h
3. sometimes a packet of salt will help me too ive done that several occassions and cleared it right up.
hope this helps
