Sadly, im fifteen years old. and i smoke like a chimney. I have recently been having this same pain. its under my left breast, in my rib area. sometimes its kicked in by upper body movements.sometimes its so intense, i must stay in the same position, breathing shallowly untill it subsides.
it feels like, when your elbow needs to pop but it hurts. so you gotta open your arm slowly to make it pop.
it feel just like that, yet in my ribs. the feeling of needing to pop.
also, i have come to notice that when i smoke from my sisters hookah, it brings in the pain.
perhaps this isnt just cardio related for some of you?
maybe lung?

I'm 20 and an avid cyclist. I have a very strong cardio system but I have the same trouble. Being a male, I am fortunately not nor will ever be pregnant. Through reading some of the posts I decided to grip a desk and breath in hard. The pain became sharper and sharper but as I breathed in all the way the pain finally and suddenly subsided. Now I can breath freely again. I've done that a few other times when these 'attacks' began, so it makes me to believe that it could indeed be gas. I should probably check on it though.

For Those that feel like a tearing sensation that resides below the breast bone may want to look up aortic dissection.

At first, your breathing may be affected by the increase in pregnancy hormones, which will cause you to breathe in more deeply. This might make you feel as if you're working harder to get air. Later on, breathing can feel more difficult as your enlarging uterus takes up more space, resulting in pressure against your diaphragm (the muscle just below your lungs).

I just had this (literally 5 minutes ago) and happened to be by my comp so I searched around and found this thread... after reading around I thought the trapped air made sense.  I kept trying to breathe deeper but that only caused extreme pain.  All I did to fix it was exhale as deep as I could (not quickly) and then upon inhaling the pain was no longer there.

Im a 21 year old Australian male and i often get a sharp stabbing pain what feels like under my heart. It gets worse if i take a deep breath, the pain is rather intense (and i have a high tolerance to pain) anyways i usually make it go away with a really deep breath OR a long exhale. It hurts quite a bit but then it leaves right after...dont know what it is :S lol

Hi, I'm 18 and I feel exactly the same way.  Sometimes more than once a week, and sometimes once every month.  It depends.  I know I have an anxiety problem, so I always categorized this as an anxiety attack, but I can't know for sure.  It still scary, meaning I'm scared there's something wrong with my heart or something.....

Wow, Guest!!! That explains alot. I do get alot of gas. Everything that everyone has said in this discussion is exactly what I have been experiencing for years. I usually get it when I'm close to my mentral cycle because I get alot of gas the week before I start. Thanks for posting this because I was scared to, and thought I was having a silent heart attack, which women can have.

So I get this every now and then but usually it only last for a short period of time. Tonight however I got it and it lasted for a couple of hours. That is  until just now my sister came into my room and I explained to her how I felt, she said she gets it sometimes too, she suggested I lift both arms up like I"m reaching for the sky. Not really sure what that did but it almost felt like it opened up my lungs so I could breathe and immediately following the pain was gone, and has been gone now for about a good 5 min. or longer. I was kinda scared to try it because I had tried it once before she told me and it felt like it would hurt my chest to lift my arms, this time I decided to just go for it and well I'm glad I did.
 Hope this works for others!!

MY SOLUTION

I've never been pregnant (38 yrs old) and I've had this pain on and off for as long as I can remember.  It's almost always under my left breast & taking a breath makes it hurt worse.  I too, had heard about trapped gas.  But whatever it is - I finally found a solution.  I take a really fast, big, deep breath.  Yes, it hurts for that moment. :-(   But that's it. . .it's gone.  It works every time, for me.  It just happened today and it was a much sharper pain than I think I have ever had.  Today, when I took the deep breath, I felt something move. (along the lines of a gas bubble) It was a strange sensation.  BUT, as always, it worked, for me.

I'd still tell your doctor, because stopping it each time doesn't tell you why you are getting it, and if something might be wrong or not .  But at least by doing this you can make it go away. . . .for this time.  You might have to do it more than once, if your first try isn't very deep and fast.  But again, I promise it always works for me, and I think it will for you all too. . . :-)

Good luck to you!

I am a 15 year old girl and this happens to me almost everyday. I dont know why thought. Apparently I'm healthy, I'm almost partially active (remember im 15 and im kinda lazy :3) But I've had this problem for almost a year. But everytime I tell my mom about it she just tells me i'm slouching to much (which cant be it cause even when im sitting straight i still get it). I am very worried though, I dont deal well with pain. I always get it either above my breast ont he left side or under it still on the left side. But only recently have I felt the little gas bubble. Ive read the replies on this topic but i still dont have much answers about it. I just want to know if its normal..or is there something really wrong?

I'm 15 years old and I get a pain above my left breast. It sometimes makes my left arm feel weird. It really hurts when I bend over to get something. It also hurts when I put my left arm over my right shoulder. It's really uncomfortable to deal with and when I walk over to tell my mom it stops so I just turn around and go back to my room or to whatever I was doing. I thought it was PCS sense that is commonly known for Teens and adults to have, but I don't have it under my left breast its always above. This horrible feeling is happening as I write this. It always takes what seems a year for it to go away. Should I go see a doctor?

Hi. I am 19 years old and had this problem. I am currently recovering from it after having the pain for almost 4 days. It was hard for me to breathe, to laugh, dance, sing, bend over even to lie down :( But today, I made an appointment with a doctor. She said that, my cartilage near the rib cage was bruised. Hard to say what was the cause since I didn't do any extreme sports within a month. So she gave me painkiller (Ibuprofen).
