I have exactly the same problem. Have my period, didn't eat healthy last night and went, for the first time in months, running.
I was running up a very, very steep hill in the park and when I came to the top I felt sick, like I was about throwing up, then I felt like I was about passing out and my ears felt plugged. Then I felt the horrible, pulling pain behind my bellybutton and as if I badly needed to go to bathroom.
It disappeared on my way home but came back about an hour ago. Hurts when I move.
I have read all the messages, thank you for all the suggestions of what it can be. It seems like it is yeast to me.

I had this happen to me too but it has only happened maybe three times in my life well it happen again tonight! I'm a girl 19 years old and the first time it happened I was probably 17 years old. This is so weird because when i would try and tell somebody about it they would just be like "Yeah its probably gas take some tums and drink some water" but that does not help. The only thing that helps is falling asleep. I haven't been to the doctor about it I was thinking of waking somebody up to go with me if it got worst and it does hurt sooooo much more when I go pee. I'm trying not to drink too much water so I don't have to pee so bad. When somebody on here said string i was like YES THATS IT! I tried looking it up online and I couldn't find anything not even on web mb but see the weird thing about all this is when I took a shower this morning i was cleaning my belly bottom and I started feeling kind of weird but it wasn't bad then I ate some mike and cookies and I was so full so a few hours past and I got up to go to the bathroom then next thing you know I was hurting so bad. It still is right now i'm like trying not to sit up right so it doesn't come back. Does it happen to people to when they get up? Mine is really bad when I go to pull myself up out of the chair. I'm glad I'm not alone. I just wish the doctors would listen to people more and try and get something out to help this because this really sucks right now.

I know it doesn't seem very helpful to add yet another story to this thread, but I have the exact same kind of pain: like a string of sharp pain from just under my belly button to my groin that is pulled tight when I stand up. I'm 19 and female and have had it happen randomly since I was around 11. I have never noticed any kind of pattern or relation to food or exercise. Every time it happens I go over everything that I did or ate to see if there is any correlation, and there isn't. The latest time it happened was just a few hours after I got out of bed, after a day of mostly laying around before, so I know there's no straining going on there. I also hadn't eaten much sugar at all or anything out of the ordinary from my regular diet. If it was food or yeast related then this would happen much more often - rather than just occasionally with large amounts of time in between - or with a change in diet. The pain makes me feel a little bit like I have to pee, but when I do finally pee the pain gets worse and seems to be more intense around my bladder and groin, and less noticeable around my belly button. Normally after I pee it goes away, and I won't get it again for months or even a year later. I only started to worry about it now because this past time the pain was far more intense and lasted much longer than it ever has before. I was just getting out of my car and it felt like someone stabbed me, the pain was so severe. I couldn't even drive home it hurt so bad, so I had to call my sister and get her to pick me up. Now it is more like an occasional twinge, but it really worried me this time.
I also wanted to make a note - not very sure if it will be helpful or not - but after talking with a few people about the problem, they've said that often when they have a stomach pain especially near their navel, it can also feel like it is lower in the groin region - or as my boyfriend so eloquently put it: "If I poke my bellybutton sometimes too much, I can feel it in my penis." I was wondering if perhaps these two areas of the body are linked in the brain, like how if you drink something very cold you will get a "brain freeze" headache, when the real pain is actually in your esophagus. I was thinking that although many of us appear to have the same kind of pain, that it could actually be pain either in the belly or in the groin, we just feel it in both. I just thought this may explain why for some of us the pain is more related to urination while others find it more muscular or food related. Just a thought - I'm no doctor.

hey, i'm male, 25 years old - same thing happens to me on and off since I was a kid. Quite surprised to see so many posts - I thought this was just a medical peculiarity only I was familiar with!
I have to validate certain observations regarding exercise - I just got the painful "pulled string" sensation as it has been described during urination only a few mins ago AFTER an intense workout much like some of the posters here. Leaning forward on a 90 degree angle seems to alleviate it.
It's interesting how the "string" stretches all the way to the penis though - maybe it's a neurological/muscular thing as opposed to
something strictly visceral.
Anyone got an official diagnosis on this?

I'm a 36 yr old male and have had this exact same problem for most of my life. Most recently again today for the first time in about half a year or so. I've been looking around trying to find out what it might be and, at least in my case, I don't think it has anything to do with diet or gas. Excercise seems to trigger it, a full bladder seems to make me more prone. The pain is excruciating for about 15 - 30 seconds as if something is tearing right under my belly button but if I just relax and don't stretch it will subside quite quickly. Urinating can also cause this to happen and then the pain seems to shoot down in a straight line towards my penis. If I get it while urinating it will not subside until I'm finished. Stretching again too soon or urinating shortly after can trigger it all over again. After about 3 or 4 hours the sensation is completely gone and urinating and stretching don't cause me anymore problems. I am quite sure it is muscular or tissue related; perhaps a small tear in the tissue under the belly button as one of the previous posters had written. As I've had this for more than 20 years now and it doesn't seem to be developing into something worse I've just decided to live with it. I assume it is some kind of weak spot or sensitive region most likely connected to when my umbilical cord was cut at birth. I am surprised to see that so many people have this as I've not come accros anyone anyone else that I know who suffers from this. It is difficult to explain how much this hurts to people around you and how seriously it can incapacitate you for a spell but I guess most of us have some kind of problem or weakness we need to live with and this is mine. Hope this is informative to others with this problem and that it helps relieve some of the worries they might have.

wow- how crazy that we all have thisin common.
my pain is definitely spot on with the pulling string. I didn't even know how to word it while searching on the net, but that's it for sure.
Okay so a breakdown of my medical history. I'm 19, female, normal height/weight, never been obese or underweight, have moderate kidney problems which go hand in hand with bladder problems (which stem mostly from too many pills in middle school and highschool), I have frequent urinalysis which almost always comes back with something because of my kidneys, had ultrasounds for ovarian cysts, regular smears, nothing abnormal, no STD's, no yeats infections, no pregnancies or terminations.
I've had the pain for about 5 years, after I started my period, but before I was sexually active. It definitely happens more often when I'm lying down, stretched out, or when I'm sitting/lying and move to a standing/sitting position. It even happens frequently when I walk up stairs. When it does happen I can't move, but to hunch over or curl up, which seems to help, but not every time.
the pain is totally random too, It doesn't correlate with anything specific like beginnig or end of my period, madications i'm taking, foods i'm eating, drinking, nothing.. sometimes if I try to pee it makes it worse but i don't think it's ever happened because I was peeing to begin with.
considering the characteristics of the pain, and that everyone that has posted here is extremely diverse, in age, gender, etc. It has to be something we all have in common.. urethra perhaps? or maybe the ligamens that run from our bladders and near our pubic bones (for the ladies, sorry guys, I don't know if you have that as well) maybe an ultrasound or examintation of that area could reveal something we've all missed?
Hopefully someone can figure this out, because my doctor thinks I'm crazy. best of luck.

FWIW: I stumbled on this thread after searching the term pain in navel bladder. A lot of this sounds familiar to me, and it has occurred on and off for many years. I get the sharp pain in my navel, and then a feeling of fullness or pressure on my bladder. I have noticed that it does seem to come after a day of two of junk life: too much time sitting, bad food, and drinking too many soft drinks, particularly Mt. Dew. I take it as a sign to drink some water, maybe a little cranberry, and to adjust my diet to have less fat, sugar, and salt. It usually passes in a day or two. At least until my unhealthy habits creep back in.

omgoodness i am so happy to find this.
i have been feeling this pain since before i got my period in 4th grade.
im 14. its amazing to see that so many other people are experiencing this and yet, it cant be explained. and its also scary. :-( im afraid of what is going on with our bodies.
like others replying to this post, i cant bend backwards or in any awkward way and it hurts to take a piss. i got this a couple of weeks ago and i was almost crying, it hurt so badly. i know this has nothing to do with pregnancy or my monthly flow. my brother and my mom both have experienced this pain. we have described it to each other and our descriptions fit perfectly. i dont know what this horrible thing is but, i know it can't be a stone or something because i know that soda is a factor in getting kidney stones and i havent had soda in two years due to a previous new year's resolution.
the only ideas i believe could be factors in this problem are: infection of the lower regions, gas, or strain of the abdominals.
this a scary thing. but its nice to know that my brother, mom, and i dont suffer alone. ive never tried to explain this to a doctor but now, im not so sure that i should. it seems they're rather stupid when it comes to this...thing.
everyone, i know we're not crazy so keep up the search for answers please!

Hello everyone. Just went to the doctor... and it's UTI. UTI affects both males and females. Your doctor can test for it right at the doctor's office with a urine sample and the test takes no more than two minutes. A simple prescription of antibiotics will do the trick. :-)

Hi folks. Yet another person who has suffered with this most of his life, and been looked at and told I'm more or less crazy by numerous doctors over the years. The only crazy thing about this is that so many people suffer from it, and yet no doctor has the slightest clue about it.
I have some important information, though. I had hernia surgery for this when I was 16, although I had had an umbilical hernia, the surgery did not resolve it. I've had many episodes after the surgery.
It's not a UTI. It's not appendicitis. It's not a hernia. It's not gas. It's not "in my head." It's not a bad diet. It's not kidney stones.
Here are the common threads: it does seem related to physical exertion. If I do something very physical, especially with a lot of bending and twisting of the trunk (like skiing, say), it's not unlikely I'll have an episode later that day when I'm relaxing and sitting down, and I go to stand up and bam, the "string pulling" pain hits me. The other thing that does seems to matter as a trigger is dehydration, which can go hand in hand with exertion.
I think it is likely related to the "urachus", which is a structure in the body which connects the bladder to the belly button, and is the vestigial remains of the tube that eliminated waste through the umbilical cord in utero. It makes a lot of sense. It makes sense that urinating triggers it or makes the pain excruciating (as it does for me during an episode) because the bladder contracts and pulls on the urachus, which is exactly what the pain feels like. The location of the pain seems to match perfectly.
What I don't understand is how the urachus could be so painful to stretch sometimes, but most of the time you can't feel it. The only thing I can think of is that the urachus can go into spasm for unknown reasons (why do muscles spasm in general?), and that's when it becomes so painful.
We need to get the word out to the medical community about this. Too many people are suffering from this and getting basically ignored and/or misled by their doctors about it. It can be a crippling condition. It's serious, and it needs to be a known condition that has a name and a treatment.

Hey everyone, so I have a little theory about this. People have said that they think it might have to do with the urachus which is connected to the bladder (T think?).. and it happens to many when their bladder is full. Maybe the bladder is pushing on the urachus because it's so full and causes this pain we all have. I'm sure many of you have thought about this already, just figured I would throw it out there anyways. I haven't had this happen to me since February but Im sure I will get it again and I'm still really curious as to what the heck it is. Keep posting your thoughts!!

 okay listen, i found a way for me to make the pain go away faster
like all of you, i have had this feeling, like a string between your bellybutton and nether region is too short and you cant fully come upright or extend your torso.
when i get it i just go all the way down so i feel fine, then i slowly start to stand up until it hurts then i go back down, trying to stretch it a little bit each time. i really think it is just a muscle that we pull on occasion, i've gotten them ever since i can remember.
hope this helped!!

Same exact thing as everyone else here. I am 29 year old male, 6'3" 210 lbs, in good shape. After researching online for a bit I've found 2 diagnosis that make sense, either the tube from the bladder to the exit gets 'caught' on something inside of you or it has to do with your abdomen muscles. I tend to lean towards the first reason. This past Labor Day Monday it happened, I was standing there and coughed and all the sudden WHAM and I had to bend over immediately, slowly I straightened out, and I coughed again, repeat. But after a few minutes it went away completely. So this leads me to believe it can't be a muscle tear or hernia, because that would definitely last longer. The other times I can remember it happening, I was jumping to touch a basketball rim and hours after playing tennis. As for it being hydration level or constipation, I can't speak to either. The only thing that 'cures' it for me is a nap. I've never bothered telling a doctor because it doesn't seem like there is anything that can be done. Also, I read in a couple places that it might have something to do with your umbilical cord which I find interesting. It definitely is unusaul that it isn't in different locations for all of us - its always from the naval to your reproductive organs, feels like a they are attached. So, what is connecting those 2 points? I'm surprised there hasn't been a doctor or medical professional on any of the forums to explain this phenomenon, because it apparently isn't as rare as I once thought. I dont think its an infection, or gluten problem, muscle tear or gas. WHAT IS THIS??

Hey guys. I am male, 21 and have had this problem pretty much as far as I can remember when I was a kid. for me it usually is associated with urinating. Whenever I have this problem, peeing is involved where as I am peeing and all of a sudden, when I lean back I have that stinging pain for maybe about half an hour. For me, to relieve the pain I simply lean forward so as not to extend the muscle and stay in the leaned forward position, usually lying on a couch with my knees up and my head up in a comfortable bent postion.
Yesterday I just finished fasting, so today I was re-hydrating my body after a month of of low water consumption. so I was drinking a lot of water and peeing every half and hour, and than drinking and peeing. It happend right now after a cycle of drinking alot of water and peeing for about 7 hours or so.
So it may also be associated with alot of water intake as well as strenuous exercise or random occurance such as a Charlie Horse. For me, it's always associated with urinating though.

Hi Everyone
I was just inspired to look this up after I finished urinating and the sharp pulling feeling appeared in my belly button.
It's really quite annoying and from my memory every time it's happened it has been around the time I have just been or needed to go to the toilet.
I would love to know what this officially is though
