OMG i thought i was the only one even i thought i was nuts i have been experiencing this for yrs 2 kids not period time or ovulation time ITS NOT GAS and i know that for me this is nothing to do w gullbladder or appendix both of mine are gone lol and it is exactly how everyone has described it as a pulling string from belly button to vagina apparently it is nothing to do w female organs due to several men having this also
Someone had said something about it being a tear in the muscle wall and had to have surgury to repair it.I believe he may be correct. Although i am 23 and have been thru 3 surguries and i would not like to go thru another one. So therefore if that is what it is it will be staying there unless it starts happening more frequently b/c as others have said its random and not all the time and can go for months without an episode.
I may call and ask my surgeons nurses about it but they'll just tell me to come in...but i am glad i am not alone in this and its a relatively normal non life threatening thing good luck to everyone

I got it first when I was 12 I had to have hernia sugery, so yea I think thats the most probable road.
If you have it you know its like nothing else, the "string" that can just-drop a 200lb man.
I got it tonight I took a hot bath and slowly streached it out(feels a lot beter btw)
Ive been paying attention to when it comes and its unination that triggers it for me. Ill have a full bladder and then take a small pee and it will kick in.

I am 53 and I have been getting this feeling from time to time for as long as I can remember. Sometimes years pass without it and then I'll get it periodically over several weeks. I have seen my Doctor about it, but strangely he has never heard of such a thing and doesn't think I should worry about it (he is a don't worry be happy sort of guy). I always figured it might be some temporary bulge in my digestive tract or gas bubble pushing on a tendon or something. I have no expertise that leads me to this conclusion, but I like it better than anything else I imagine.
I guess I'll ignore it until it is too bad to live with, although I'll keep checking back to this thread. It has made me give up hanging from my ankles and doing chin-ups from that position. At my age that is probably for the best. I can't do any kind of chin-up when I feel the pain acutely.

I'm an 18 year old male and have been having this pain off and on since I was probably 10-12.
It is exactly as described with the string analogy. Also it does seem to have something to do with urination and having a full bladder.
I mostly just wanted to post this because I never work out. I'm not fat, I guess I must have high metabolism or something because I never think about what I eat and manage to stay thin somehow.
Anyway, my point is that it isn't because Ive been benching too much or whatever.
Thanks for all the info people, I'ts at least good to know I'm not crazy. Maybe I can even get some medical cannabis out of this, since it is a form of chronic pain :-) Haha! I love california!

Same here, started when I was 19, usually after doing abdominal exercises, afterwards, sitting hunched over and suddenly arching back.
The pain is a sharp sting behind the bellybutton, and some of it feels like pulling in my crotch. The pain stops if I hunch over again and if I slowly correct my posture.
Whenever I stay a considerable amount of time without exercises and do this routine, the pain occurs. A doctor told me it is a small hernia in my bellybutton.
I have had it for more than 10 years and luckily it never became serious.
It is funny indeed that many doctors are not able to diagnose it.
(I hope some doctors read This)

I have this quite alot for as long as I can remember.
I beleive it might be something to do with the 'median umbilical ligament' as this goes from our belly buttons to our bladders. In the womb it is called the Urachus, and there is a thing called patent urachus where the tube is not fully closed. When its still wide open, the babies get it removed. Patent Urachus has been found in adults too!
Maybe the pain is the urachus fully healed at the top by the belly button on the outside, but the actual inside of the tube is still open?
Personally I think some peoples are just a bit shorter/tighter than others thus pulls more on us poor unfortunates. ^_^
Wikipedia states "It may be used as a landmark for surgeons who are performing laparoscopy, such as laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. Other than this, it has no function in a born human and may be cut or removed with impunity."

I have had this strange pulling pain behind my belly button and down into my pelvis since I can remember. I'm talking as young as three years old. Usually, the pain happens if I touch the inside of my belly button or if I took a bath and the water level would be right at my belly button line. I am 23 years old now and have had the pain randomly forever. Having a full bladder makes it worse and makes me have to pee and then peeing makes it hurt way worse. The pain hurts usually if I lift something heavy or if I stretch out. I have also noticed, after giving birth to four children, that pressure from the babies on the inside changes the way the pain feels. My bellybutton being stretched at 7-9 months pregnant becomes less sensitive. It's almost like having a pulled muscle in your arm and putting pressure on it, It relieves the pain. Then after birth the pain subsides and I do not feel it for 6-12months after the baby is born and then my belly button becomes sensitive again and the same pulling pain shoots down my abdomen. Our youngest son is not yet one and my menstrual cycle has not returned yet, so I know it has nothing to do with that. My sister has candida, which is the condition of a build up of yeast in the body. She has to take medicine to reduce the yeast and eat a special diet. She has never had this problem. I think that it is a ligament. A ligament that runs from your belly button to your pelvis and it is affected by muscles and movement. Twisting or bending over, lifting something, eating to much, over extenuating the abdominal muscles, or any other type of activity that affects the stomach can cause the nerve to be affected and it takes time for the ligament to relax. When I was pregnant with our first two children and had the exact type of horrible pain that ran down the side of my stomach to my inner thighs and the doctor told me it was just ligaments stretching. Its hard to believe that this much excruciating pain can be caused by a ligament, but I think that is what it is. I know that answer kind of sucks, but if you just be careful how you move your body and not over work it, I think that the pain will subside and not return.

It is funny that some people are talking about drinking beer before this pain happens. I am a male and this pain ONLY happens to me after a hard night of drinking. On Saturday it came up after drinking about 12 on Friday night. It was also right after Easter so I had a lot of sugar that weekend. To top it all off I went straight to work after getting 3 hours of sleep, all hung over and didnt have a drink of water until several hours after starting work. I got home from work pretty tired and dehydrated, and went to take a piss and felt this exact pain you all speak of.

I cant believe so many people experience this too!! I'm amazed! Whenever I mention it to folk they look at me like i'm mad!
So I've found out it usually always occurs when my bowels are full and usually going to the toilet helps! I'm not very regular (too much info, i'm sure!) and find this is the cause! Hope that helps!

I have the same sharp pain thru my belly button that radiates down in the vaginal area and it is simply unbearable. everytime i asked a doctor or nurse they told me. "there are nothing but guts there. It can't hurt" well they are the crazy ones not me. We need to find some way to manage this pain.

28 year old male...have had this problem for about 15 years. I have noticed that it comes on the same day, or even two days after a significant use of the abdominal muscles, most likely a strain. It hurts to stand up straight and the pain increases dramatically during urinating has your urinary bladder is drained. I have found that resting for 2-4 hours with your legs propped up to take the strain off your abdominal muscles, along with some anti-inflammatory medicine fixes it right up.

18 year old male.. Happens randomly every month or so. No strenuous activity at the time of the pain. I feel like my muscle is tearing behind my bellybutton, and urinating is just horribly painful when this tearing feeling occurs(the pain travels down to my penis). I did go hiking earlier this morning, but the tearing started while sitting on my couch and I leaned back and felt it. The worst of it seems to go away relatively fast if I don't move around to much for a few minutes. Then there is just some residual pain, just kind there reminding me not to move the wrong way.
Oh another note: I had my appendix out 7 years ago, not laproscopic removal though.
No one knows what this is yet?

I have the same pain! It tends to originate from this little bubble of hard tissue right over my belly button, which may be scar tissue from a laparoscopic appendectomy but I'm not sure. It is a pulling sharp pain that goes all the way down. Has anyone else found any cause or solution to it?

I had this same feeling and im a male im 14 going to be 15 oct 23 and this has happend to me alot in my life but it was small and i mostly brushed it off but last sunday(2 days ago from now) i had my worst one i was in church holding my pee for a good 15 minutes til finally i went to urinate when i stood it felt exactly like a string was pulling my belly button and around my penis i urinated and it was painful dull and achy felling in my bladder as it emptied also to top it off i i stop wetting the bed recently it just stopped i could never feel it and im happy it mysteriously stopped. i went to docters time after time since i was 10 about my bed wetting and they never helped so i decided to tuff it out until it stopped(thankfully it did) which leads me to believe it may be a UTI idk if men can get yeast infections but it may have been that 2(i recommend cutting baq on sugers drink lots of water) for me my mom wouldnt let me drink any liquid before bed with probly explanes why it took so long to stop(if you do wet and you have this problem dont be afraid to drink lots of water before bed,cuz for me it was like wetting the bed was inevitable and it wasnt my fault i didnt feel a thing in my sleep)so be patient with it and i hope this helps any1 who has this problem(ps. if u believe it to be a yeast infection watch the sugers because sugers feed the infection) xD FML....
