Found this nice article that explains shortness of breath, swallowing problems etc. followimg thyroid surgery. Also thanks to the person that mentioned vagus nerve. I think that explains some of my other side effects of the surgery.

Have any of you guys had a doctor prescribe you desicated thyroid , or been given iodine as a supplement? Start using google to get more info. Some old doctors still prescribe it. Younger doctors were trained differently.

This is fascinating! Thank you for sharing that information. I had a TT 4 months ago for Thyroid Cancer and completed RAI treatment two months ago and have had 'on again, off again' feelings of chest tightness, a lump in my throat, difficulty swalling etc. I also found information about a disorder called 'Globus Pharyngeus' that appropriately describes some of what I've experienced that may be helpful fo those on this site. Just like everyone else, I also received really no information from doctor's on it and they appear to be less informed than what I can find online. It's enough to make a person wonder why I don't just go to google in the first place rather than messing with all these doctors?!?!?! Sheesh! Good luck with your issues! I hope you are able to find some releif for them!

In December 2010 I had a tt due to several enlarged nodules in my thyroid, they so quickly and were cutting off my breathing, now since the surgery a ct scan has shown my trachea is back to normal size, I still find it hard to breath during the day, especially when busy, talking alot at work, any exercise (even 1 minute worth) I can't lay on my back in bed for long, the drs are still trying to get my medication right. Can anyone please let me know if you or your dr has found out why it is hard to breath, It feels like there is something tied around my throat or someone is choking me. I thought it might have been the scarring but my dr doesn't think so, they are now sending me to get chest xray and see a breathing specialist, which is great but I am an asthmatic and know the difference between asthma and this other feeling. I look forward to hearing any advice.

Hello! I am 29 years old and recently went through a partial thyroidectomy. I have been having the same symptoms of shortness of breath and chest pain and tightness. The day after the procedure, I immediately noticed my skin being very hot like I had been out in the sun all day. In addition, I occasionally get hot flashes with some nausea. Each time I take my temperature and blood pressure and find them within normal range. I know my body is still healing from the surgery and aches and pains are normal, I just get nervous because I have a history of a blood clot. The last time I mentioned having shortness of breath to my doctor, she immediately sent me for a CT to check for a clot in my lungs. It of course turned out to be just a sinus infection. So my dilemma is whether I should even mention these symptoms to my doctor or just wait and see how it plays out.

I have the same symptoms as a lot of you (shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, dizzy spells) after going through a total thyroidectomy (for follicular cancer) in October and December of 2011.  I'm glad to see I'm not alone here. :-)

Oops, thunder storm blew in, so I had to disconnect.

Anyway, total thyroidectomy was performed after follicular cells were found in right lobe microscope examination. I was 45 years old at the time.

Quick question for all you thyriodectomy due to cancer patients. How many of you are diabetic and are on oral diabetes medication (glimpepiride and the like?). Seems some studies now show that the upswing seen now in new in thyroid cancer cases might be attributable to that.

I HAD A TOTAL THYROIDECTOMY 9 MONTHS AGO, I WAS A PICTURE OF HEALTH FOR 60 YEARS THAN IMMEDIATLEY I STARTED TO HAVE SHORTNESS OF BREATH ALL THE TIME I WAS UP. ANOTHER THING MY BODY WOULD NOT SHUT DOWN TO SLEEP I HAD TO TAKE A SLEEPING PILL ( NEVER IN MY LIFE HAD I HAD TO TAKE ANY PILLS BUT VITAMINS). IM HEAR TO TELL YOU THERE IS A LIGHT AT THE END OF TUNNEL. MY BODY WENT BACK TO NORMAL I CAN SLEEP AND VERY RARELY DO I HAVE ANY SHORTNESS OF BREATH. IT TOOK 9 MONTHS BUT IM BACK, SO HANG IN THERE. DOCTOR SAID THE ONLY THING HE COULD THINK OF WAS WHEN THE THYROID WAS REMOVED IT PUT MY BODY IN TO ANXIETY.

I had a total thyroidectomy in Feb of this year so its been 4 months. I also had pap thyroid cancer.  I have a hard time breathing alot, I cant stand it. I could just be sitting down and it feels like I cant breathe. A couple of times it got so bad I went into the ER but my oxygen stats were at 100 %. Is this because im still hypothyroid? Please is everyone has expirienced this and got through it please help us fiqure out what we can do!

I had half a thyroidectomy due to a large no cancerous nodule pressing on my esophagus. It had caused many symptoms through the years and I was told that they were not caused by the thyroid (laryngitis, swallowing, etc.). I finally changed Endo and had a biopsy and ultrasound. The nodule had grown supposedly and I had it removed 2 years ago. The surgeon told us the nodule was much larger than the ultrasound showed and one of the vocal cord nerves was embedded in it. While cutting out the nodule it was severed. I went to the Emory Voice Clinic where they gave me breathing exercises and I was given a collagen shot in the deflated vocal cord. It helped a lot, but I still get the tingling, feel like I am breathing through a straw feeling. My poor surgeon still hasn't released me, hoping the nerve would grow back. I believe that it will always be this way. Bummer.

Sorry Jami. See my post. It may be a damaged nerve or a traumatized vocal cord.

I had a thyroidectomy because of fast growing nodules. I have never hadd any medical issues that would cause the shortness of breath and i also have problems with my voice. By mid afternoon or in extreme humidity It is terrible. It has been 4 months it si getting slightly better but still on exertion I have the shortness of breath. I am a nurse and have talked to many paeople regarding this. I has one patient to tell me that she had the same symptoms and it took one year for it to resolve. I also had considered specialist. But I have had an EKG which is normal..I do not smoke and not exposed to smoke. This is a major issue after the thyroidectomy that providers should tak seriously and make patietns aware of it instead of saying we have anxiety. I have had the same luck with my surgeon..
