Oh, Kim!
I am sooooo sorry!! I had read about things like that, and actually went and met with a surgeon here in Phoenix who I was told had experience, blah, blah, blah. When I asked him how often he had performed parathyroidectomy's he said in a very haughty tone "I am an experienced surgeon." I thought, yea, but that doesn't answer my question now does it? Needless to say, I got the ball rolling with Dr. Norman the next day. I was comfortable with my decision immediately. Kim, there is no such thing as a scan showing the affected parathyroid, and then it mysteriously dissapearing. I can't imagine that your calcium would go down to normal unless the affected gland is removed, but I am not a doctor. Honey, if you need to go through this again, please contact Dr. Norman and Dr. Politz. What is/was your calcium level and PTH level? That should be measured along with the calcium, did he tell you that?

My PTH level (first time) was 79 and the calcium had been testing about 11.7 over the last several months. I had symptoms of high calcium. From what I understand, that PTH level is not that high, but it should be LOW in relation to the calcium.
And, why would the parathyroid show up on one scan and not another?
The other causes for high calcium didn't sound very encouraging...so I was really hoping this was it!
Thx Kim

I am so glad to find this site. I had a complete thyroidectomy 4 weeks ago and am having some problems. At first I felt great! Guess that was the drugs talking... for some time I have had this wierd crying jag that comes over me between 3 and 5 in the evening... I have sinus problems also and have had lots of mucus and trouble swallowing... I get so frustrated trying to get rid of the mucus getting worn out and then I start to cry and that makes things worse and it just spirls out of control from there. I have a very hard time eating and drinking, so I am not well hydrated, not good. any ideas on that? nothing tastes good to me. scrambles eggs are my best food. I have lost lots of weight and muscle and am weak. I need to get stronger to get well. My Dr. says my symptoms are not normal and had me have blood work today and will go to see him earlier than planned. This has been a long road to get to this point and i know I am nearly at the end of the tunnel, but man it's frustrating when you've been sick for so long and they had such a hard time figuring out what was wrong. On top of everything else. I had Hashimotos, which I knew, but they found a cancer. Very little, so I was VERY LUCKY to have the surgery when I did...it was elective and my husband and I decided to go for it. Any comments or suggestions that could help with mucus etc.[/list]

I had a total thyroidectomy on Feb 8th, and I am just starting to feel normal, too. I had all the weird emotional stuff until late last week (4 wks after surgery) and suddenly, it's just gone. I started sleeping better and have more energy. The only thing that is bothering me, is the strange swallowing issues. I have been massaging the scar like the surgeon told me, but I feel like I have this big bump in my throat and it is really difficult to swallow around. Sometimes it feels like food/pills get stuck on it! The doctor told me it's nothing, and it will pass, but I swear I have gunk in my throat I can't get up, and that this thing will choke me if I take too big a bite of food. Does it go away, ever??

Hi All!!! If you are still checking back here... I had a SECOND op on Feb 26th by a specialist at UC Davis. Finally got the parathyroid, adenoma and had to take 1/2 the thyroid with it. Was right on the vocal chord nerves. There are some funky spots in my voice at 2 weeks...singing. Trying to take it easy and just do light scales...but worried about scarring or adhesions. Rubbing the area lightly...lumpy. Still having calcium level symptoms too... I read somewhere here about a condition where the bones are starved for calcium and this can go on for a month or so??? anyone??

"Hungry Bone Syndrome" - been there!
Had total tyroidectomy & one parathyroid resection on 3/14 - My calcium was slightly low leaving the hospital. I was given IV calcium and Magnesium before they sent me home. One day after being home started having tingling in face and hands, we called the surgeon's office - they sent us to ER and met us there, labs showed calcium had dropped.
They said they were going to admit me overnight and give me IV calcium - that was on Friday evening - I finally got out of the hospital on Tuesday evening. It was like my body couldn't get enough calcium and even with all they were giving me (IV, liquid, tablets, Vitamin D) my levels were not increasing and in some cases were dropping.
Doc said I had "Hungry Bone Syndrome" and that I should have a bone scan soon. Calcium levels are still on the lower side and are being monitored - take 2000mg of calcium daily.
One additional note: I also have Graves & was told that it is not uncommon for people with Graves to have this problem, as Graves can expedite Osteoporosis.

I just had surgery yesterday to remove a parathyroid tumor. It was the size of a golfball, and had been causing me problems for over 15 years. I am young, so doctors said they would "wait and see" years ago, and did not do anything about it. I finally did something about it when the symptoms progressed very badly and I started having frequent kidney stones.
Anyway, the steri-strips are driving me crazy! They itch like mad, and I can constantly feel my fingers making their way towards the incision on my neck wanting to scratch the daylights out of it! Any suggestions for keeping the steristrips from itching so badly? My surgeon said it was probably the adhesive. Well, thats fine, but I'm going to go mad if I have to wait with these things on my neck for 8 days!
Other than that, I feel pretty good. I'm tired, but its only 1 day post surgery. They said my levels dropped immediately once the gland was removed. I woke up in recovery with a LOT of pain and spent a long time down there receiving pain medication, but now I'm doing okay with just tylenol. Yes, it hurts, but it is very tolerable.
I just want to know how long these steri-strips will stay on? Will they come off on their own, or do I need to wait and have them removed at my post-op doctor visit next week? They told me not to get the incision site wet - does that mean for the whole next 8 days, or just for the first couple of days. I just read that the incision is water-tight by 36 hours post-surgery. Any suggestions about what to do with the maddening itchiness, please, I'm all ears!

I had the right 1/2 of my thyroid removed in Sept. 2009. This week (4 months later) I'm going back to the surgeon to discuss a "scar revision". The scar tissue (adhesions) are stuck to the muscle. It was stuck worse but part of it did separate, after it softened up. Wait, like the doctor suggests as the tissue under the skin goes through many changes after surgery. After 3 or 4 months if it's still stuck, insist on having it fixed.

i just had parathyroid surgery at the center in Tampa two days ago, and think anyone who doesn't go there is being seriously misguided. My endocrinologist raved about it. And i already feel better. If your doctor suggests otherwise, I suggest he is being irresponsible and you should find another one. I feel very strongly about this. Research this very thoroughly.

I just had the same surgery 7 days ago. I found that chewing on 4 baby aspirins 4 times a day had a wonderful healing and numbing affect on the burning throat. Also, if you gargle with some warm salt water, it can help alleviate some of the pain and it seems to speed the healing. Another thing I had on hand was Colgate PerioGard mouth rinse from my dentist. It also quieted the pain and seemed to help heal. As you can see, I have felt quite miserable with my pain, but found a variety of things to help mitigate it. I think my favorite fix was the aspirin after the salt-water gargle. I hope you feel better soon!

I had three parathyroid adenomas removed a week ago and am at work presently. I flew to Tampa and had Dr. Norman do the procedure, It was outpatient and I flew home the following day. Easiest surgery I have ever had. I now have a "golf ball" beneath the surgery site which is common in 3% of patients. It can take 6 weeks to go away. As the day progresses it enlarges and is difficult to swallow around. My surgery was 8-26-12 and I no longer have bone pain and look forward to sleeping at night. Best of luck to everyone. Remember Tyhroid and Parathyroid surgery is indeed different. my incision is 1".

I just had parathyroid surgery 2 weeks age and I have a healing ridge above my incision. I did some research and this is normal. It will take time to heal, it will get softer. Any concerns contact your surgeon. Look up thyroid healing ridge. The best to you!
