It was long time ago when my father first time felt problems with his heart. It wasn’t worrying him so much, and didn’t feel it a lot, so we didn’t worry a lot. Last few months he is not good so we took him to the doctor again. He gave him Sparteine. Since I have never hears anyone used this drug, I would like to know what is it used for and what kind of drug is that.

Sparteine is obtained from distillation of a concentrated infusion of the tops of the cysticus scoparius. Also it could be form of the mother liquor after precipitating scoparin. Sparteine is a colorless liquid of an oily consistence which is soluble in alcohol, ether and chloroform. Spharteine sulphate is crystallized product from the action of sulphuric acin on sparteine. It is crystal, or a white powder, neutral, odorless, bitter, deliquescent, and soluble in water and alcohol. Sparteine has a profound influence upon the nerve centers, thence upon the heart. It quickens the pulse rate and increases arterial tension. Also augments the force of the muscular contraction of the ventricles and increases the movement of the blood through the arterioles. Sparteine is a remedy normally used to treat weak heart with muscular feeble-ness. It produces its effects quickly and influence remains for several hours, but it is not a drug to be depended upon in all cases.
