I am 36 yrs old and was recently told that my uterus walls are too thick. Dr put me on 10 days of progesterone to "flush" the uterus. I am so scared after looking online at this!! Has anyone else had this close to my age? Please help calm my fears while I wait for the "rush" that will hopefully come. Dr said if I don't bleed a lot, then they will do more tests to see why the walls are so thick. I am so scared. Please help?
Hi, progesterone is often used to bring on a period if you havent bled for a while or to counter the effects of oestrogen during hrt this will be like a heavy period so try not to worry too much. I am interested to know how they have have diagnosed that your uterine walls are too thick though, is this your family doctor or a gynae specialist? are you having problems with menstruation?

Thank you so much for your response. I went to my reg dr in Jan for a routine PAP, etc. Everything was fine except I mentioned some "mid-month cramping" which sparked conversation and also made my mind wander (and my fingers on the web!), ugh.... All tests came back fine, including routine CBC, etc. Cramping continued. Not excruciating, but there none the less. So I went to a new OB/GYN (haven't really had one since moving across the state 13 years ago, although I have always had annual PAPS at dr). At my request, GYN did an ultrasound and transvaginal ultrasound and said everything looked good except thick uterine walls. My last period was Feb 11, and it was only about 2 days so dr said he'd like to try progesterone to make sure I have a "good" period this month, like 4-5 days. My cycles have never been extremely regular, ever, but I do have one about every 5-6 weeks so doctors have never been overly concerned. I only took BC for a few years before my kids were born, then my hubby had a vasectomy so no need. Anything to help me relax would be so much appreciated. Of course when you search online, you see the worst case scenarios! :-(

I know what you mean, what you need to remember is that there are reasons for giving this medication and as long as you fall into the remit and are being monitored by a specialist who you can questions of if you need to, then you should be fine.
hope this helps to put your mind at rest.

Thank you, again. I do feel a little better today because I found out that my uterus lining is not SUPER thick, like abnormally thick... just pretty thick (about 10mm) for someone like me that tends to have lighter periods, so dr just want to make sure I flush ALL of the lining with my next one. Today will be day 4 out of 10 of the progesterone. I've heard from several people that progesterone makes their period VERY heavy, so I guess that is the desired result for me and hopefully I won't need to do this or worry again! Also, I guess this is very common. I've been obtaining a little more information that makes me feel better so hopefully this will help others as well!

OK... I'm going on day 8 of the Prometrium (progesterone). I have had some side effects that I'm not sure I like, but I am functioning o.k. The first few days, I got very dizzy about an hour after taking it and then it subsided. After day 6, it seems that I have lost my appetite and feel a little extra thirsty and some diarrhea. I called the dr and they said that it was o.k. to keep taking it?? Has anyone out there had these side effects with Prometrium? I'm really hoping that this hormone will cause a good heavy period soon after I stop the 10 day prescription and "sluff off" my uterus lining. Still a little nervous.... all of this came about due to some very mild pelvic pain (could it be from heavy lining?) that could not be attributed to period or even urinary tract infection so the anxiety of "what it could be" is the worst. I'm sure that's why most people turn to these boards, so if anyone has any experience or advice for me please reply!?!

Just an update for anyone interested.... the progesterone/prometrium was not very fun to take as it made me very dizzy and sleepy after taking it, so i took it at night. about 4 days after taking the last pill, I started AF but it was not a normal one. seemed kinda watery and tissue-y (sorry if tmi), so of course i went in for the hysterosonogram (saline infused into uterus and ultrasound) and everything looked great!!! no more thick uterus wall and all is good. I guess the progesterone did what it was supposed to do!! All of this experience caused me extreme anxiety, mainly due to information found online regarding my symptoms. So... If I have any advice to leave for anyone reading this, it is... ask all the questions of your doctor you can think o, listen to their answers and knowledge and know that these things are VERY common and part of an agonizing process to ensure your good long life. :-)

Wondering how you are after all this time. How it is now, when looking back on it. I'm 48 and today was day 3 of my 10 pills. My uterus wall is 15mm thick (ultrasound for me too). Today I'm noticing a LOT of moodiness and I'm tired and feeling very weepy, not normal for me. I am nervous about when I finish the 10 pills, thinking based on personal info it's going to be a VERY heavy flow. I will just write off that week and plan to stay near my bathroom!! Feeling quite irritable, really detesting that I have 7 more days to take this stuff... I want to find me a cave and be left alone until this is over...!!! Found this page while looking for info on side effects of taking it. A lot of what you said sounds like me so I guess that's what I'm dealing with here. Sorry you went through that but also glad to know I'm not the only one :)

Hi, I just started looking info up about having a thickened uterus. I'm also 36 and just found out a month and a half ago that I have a 'thickened uterus'. I went to the Dr. b/c my period was so 'off' the month before. Spotting (dark), then normal, then spotting. It went on for almost 3 weeks. Anyway, I had the ultrasound, found out it was almost double thickness of normal. She put me on progesterone for 2 months. I'm a few days into my second rx and still having the same issue. Haven't fully, even hardly started, just dark spotting and I'm getting worried. How long did it take to be regular again? Thanks in advance, and I hope you are doing well and all is back to normal. :)

She doesn't have brothers or sisters .I feel torn . .broken..i took 10mm progesterone for 5 days. Its been 4 days after stopping. And no. Period yet any advice on how to get pregnant plzz

I have had a heavy period for the past two months so heavy I had to use urine pads and stay home I am 46 my husband and I had hoped to have one more child my chest started hurting and I had numbness in my hands and arms so I feared a heart attach and went to the hospital they informed us if I left there I would likely die my hemoglobin was 6 so they gave me blood transfusions and did a ultrasound and said my uterus walls were thick I had had a Merina IUD removed 2 years ago it had been in for over 5 years and after it was removed my periods were crazy I would barely have a period then have no period then heavy and so on but this time I was bleeding out and had very thick uterus wall linings they put me on progestrone pills and said I take them for a month then I would have a heavy period that the medication would thin the walls but they never said if I would be able to become pregnant ever again

I'm curious how this turned out for you. I've had some really bad pain every 6 days to 2 weeks for a couple months now. I went to my doctor and he did the ultrasounds and said my uterine wall was 4 times thicker than it should be even with me breastfeeding still. He put me on progesterone to try to force me to have a cycle because I haven't had one since I got pregnant with my son and he is almost a year and a half. I've been taking it for 7 days now and haven't started but have had symptoms like lower back pain and a ravenous need for chocolate and peanut butter. I'm 38 years old so I'm close to the same age as you and was hoping you could tell me what happened. Did it help and you had a cycle? Did it send the uterine wall? If you did have a cycle how scared should I be? Will there be a lot of pain

I have been in severe pain but they told me I had some ovarian cyst so I assume they may have something to do with it the pain has been like having a miscarriage bad in my back and where the ovaries are but I have had clots that look like lining they are like layers thin not thick at all just lots of thin layers but to much bleeding because my hemoglobin was very low when I was released from the hospital and that was after two blood transfusions but I di think the cysts are making it worse
