After having lifted weights 3 to 4 times a week for a solid year I had put on 12 lbs. I took as little as .5 mg of prednisone a day for about a month and put on another 8 lbs. I like that I keep the weight even if I dont eat for a day : )
Gaining and keeping weight is not bad if you want to be stronger, and for that matter, you can lift more weight (train harder) on mild cortisone because your joints dont hurt as much especially if you are past 40
my name is renee and i have never been on steroid be for but my dr put me on them for my hair do you think it will make me gain weight it is the pill
It is the shot itself!! Because I dieted exercised and still gained 8 lbs with the 1st shot! I have had 3 now, Dr. said it was NOT the shot! Total of 11 lbs, been 2 months since last shot, Face is bloated, boobs are huge, stomach is very bloated! My elbow still hurts!
The steroid you are taking is for a different reason all together, so the weight gain will be due to the side effects of the steroid in your body..Your doctor will be the best person to guide you.
I know this thread is a little old...but I have just been on the internet digging for just a little piece of hope! I am literally sitting here crying about this! I have several heriated thoracic and 2 lumbar discs. So my chiro sends me to a back doctor...went for the first time last week. I was in so much pain he said he couldn't do injections...but put me on a 5 day steriod blast orally...I go back today and first thing, I start blurted out that the past week was HORRIBLE! the side effects of the oral steriods are not worth it! They barely took the edge of the pain and the rest was a train wreck! Irritable...haven't slept more than a few hours a night, completely sick to my stomach and nausous and even though my family was having to force me to eat...I just felt so bad, I definetly did not have an appitite...dispite that I gained 8.5 pounds in 4 days! None of my clothes fit, I am bloated 24/7 to the point where it feels like I can't breath....like when you eat Thanksgiving dinner and you are just full thru your ribs! When I do eat, I can only eat a few bites at a time...but today I go in there, complaining to him and the next thing I know he is doing some "numbing" injections...he did about 12 of them..then I find out they are also steriods! Did I seriously just let him give me massive doses of the same c**p I was on the last week?
I feel totally hopeless at this point! I still have pain and a horrible amount of pressure where he didn't do the injections..its like the pain just moved! Prior to this, happening w/my back...a few months back, I worked my butt off for months in the gym and lost about 20 pounds, I now have gained 50% of that back in less than a week! And everything I am reading here...it just gets worse! I am at the end of my rope really! Why did I let him do that!!
How non-compassionate... People get steroid shots because of pain. Perhaps then they can't exercise as much. The sterioids do increase your appetite then. I was never a big eater, but I had an epidural steroid shot a month and a half ago. I can't work out because my back is hurting. The shot didn't work. But I am very hungry. Yes I am eating more but that's not normally me. No I can't exercise because it hurts and the shot didn't work. I have gained 17 lbs. Thanks for not caring.
Folks You All Need To Look UP Cushing's Syndrome This Condition Is Caused By Use Of Steroids doesnt matter what type. There is cushings disease but this is caused by a tumor on the pituatory gland or one on the adrenal glands. Cushings is characterized physically by get this moon face (round face) buffallo hump (lump of fat between shoulders) and central obesity (redistibution of fat to belly) you gain weight on belly face and back. I was shocked when i read about this online. They dont tell u if you take steroids you could end up with this feckers.
With cushings they have to treat it once you get it or you just keep gaining weight. One woman I watched online went from 120 to 350lbs in a year. Her original doctor told her she was basically a greedy lazy pig. Her thyroid was normal and feck off. Eventually she went to a doctor with a brain and they discovered her cortisol levels were through the roof. As I understand it steroids mess with your adrenal glands and metabolism. You end up with a sluggish thyroid which compounds the problem.
I have had a course of steroids for an autoimmune disease I put on a stone in weight, which I cant shift. I run 10 k everyday do 4 kettle bell classes a week for strength and resistance, swim 2 evenings a week and cycle 30 every sunday. I stick to 29 propoints a day and I still cant shift a lb. I had my last injection in March 2013 and am hoping my hard work will show some weight loss between now and xmas btw I have been following this exercise regimine at this level since april 2013 before that between xmas and april i was only running 10k a day everyday. I am Dairy and Gluten free I also stick to a sugar free diet as the steroids fecked up my sugar levels. NEEDLESS TO SAY I WILL NEVER HAVE ANOTHER STEROID ANYWHERE NEAR ME NOT AN INJECTION PILL NOTHING
I have just had my fourth and last cervical epidural injection today to try to help with pain and inflamation from a severe stenosis. I cannot have surgery until later this spring when two new neurologist come to our city. I am past frustration because I have always mainted a weight around 190 which is overweight but did not look out of porportion. as of today, and 4 months later I am now 219 and just want to cry. My diet has not changed, my exercise has not changed but now I fit in NOTHING and the weight is strictly around my waist. If it does not cause weight... it is very coincidental that the weight gain started a few weeks after my first injection. I plan on calling my MD with this information to get his input I was too upset when I saw the scale this am to even mention it to him.
Seriously? You are a very mean person and honestly I cannot believe you could say such a thing. Let me guess....you thought Hitler was a hero too didnt you?
