I use herbs to keep calm, no side effects. VALARIAN extract. I put valarian on top of my tongue, acts quick, half an eye dropper. Go to a Vitamin Shoppe site or herb site a read first, then you can decide. The Herbalist is good also. Plain old Dole's Pineapple juice , just a couple of big sips, try a straw easier to drink with straw, brings up my belches of air up pretty fast, stand up lean over a counter or a bed. When you breathe, breathe through your nose, out your mouth. Or just stand up if you can, sitting is bad. I use Siddha Sea Salts for my nose and chest congestion, just a few sprays under your tongue and it melts even sticky mucous pretty fast from head and chest. If you are not allergic to herbs it works fast. Test in small quantities to see if you are allergic first. This is what gets me through a day.

I have the same issues as described, but I have one thing no one has mentioned: vocal chord dysfunction. Due to damage from acid reflux, my vocal chords are damaged. Instead of opening when I take a breath in or out they clamp shut. I frequently have labored breathing when walking because I HAVE to force air through my mouth. Whenever I eat, the acid reflux causes an almost immediate sensation of not being able to breathe. If I am still (not walking around) for about 20 minutes after eating it will subside and I can breathe normally again. I didn't know about Vocal Chord Dysfunction (VCD) until I went to an Allergy clinic and they did a computerized spirometer (sp?) test on me.
VCD mimics asthma. Many people are prescribed asthma medications without any relief because it's not a lung issue - it's vocal chords. By the way = MOST doctors have never heard of it before. You may have to educate them. Good luck.
