I have the same dull pain right under my sternum. It feels like there's a ball or something stuck there. I can't sleep at night because it keeps me awake. My stools are normal and I don't experience any reflux. I feel fine other than the discomfort in my upper abdomen. I have to sit up straight all the time otherwise its uncomfortable. I've never had any food intolerance or allergies before. I'm going to try cutting the gluten out of my diet. Maybe that will help as the people above mentioned. I have no idea what it could be... I'm starting to think maybe it's my heart.

Titan, your symptoms are EXACTLY what I am currently dealing with, all the way down to the stress part. I guess I need to just wait it out.

Since this post was helpful to me I thought I would come back and fill everyone in on my diagnosis.  The doctor did a blood test and it came back positive for H Pylori which is an infection found in the stomach that causes ulcers.  Half of the people in the world have this bacteria in their stomach but not everyone has any symptoms from it.  I have been given a strong round of antibiotics for two weeks to get rid of it.  I will report back once I am done with the antibiotics with an update.

Titan incredibly I have almost exactly the same symptoms what you described. I have had almost all the medical tests including MRI, CT and found nothing. The center of my mild pain (on and off and with antibiotic usage it goes away mostly) is on the Terminal ileum. Please let me us and me know (I put my personal email below in the optional email box) what had happened with your conditions?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Medications like prevacid actually reduce stomach acid and inhibit digestion, absorption and protection from things like bacterial infections and parasitic infection.  They are aimed at the wrong problem. Acid Reflux/GERD is the new "we don't know why your gut isn't working right" syndrome and unfortunately what is often missed is that low stomach acid is why people have reflux and heart burn. There are many facets to gut health but rarely do these drugs work on those things. Dietary modifications to remove allergens, taking probiotics, killing off bad bacteria/funal issues and parasite cleanses can lead to recovering gut function. There are also other health reasons for low stomach acid like hypothyroidism. In which people find HCL supplements and digestive enzymes helpful. If you can't afford to use these regularly, something as simple as raw apple cider vinegar before a meal will do the same job. (just a teaspoon, then eat). This assists your stomach in properly digesting your food so it does not sit in there and putrefy which is then backs up and causes the heart burn. Antibiotics also destroy our guts over time by killing off everything good. Unfortunately you end up going through many very expensive tests only to find nothing. I would also suggest anyone with mysterious gut pain eliminate all genetically modified food from your diet. GMO's cause these same problems in the animals eating them. Perhaps seek out a naturopath or holistic physician or a chiropractor who specializes in holistic health care to get you on the road to feeling better again.

I have been burning up the internet to try and figure out what my "ache" is. You pretty much nailed it all the way down to the itching and loss of a family member crazy Thank you for posting, Being a cancer survivor I stress on every pain , I am planning a visit to my doctor Glad you are feeling better

This pain is most likely H-Pylori which is a stomach bacteria. The pain in your upper sternum is the bacteria that is eating away at your stomach lining. To get rid of this you must go to the doctor and get pretty strong anti-biotics. Also, I would recommend taking an anacid for up to a month after.

I like many have been suffering with similar symptoms for a long time swollen abdomen chronic pain, I was diagnosed with diverticulitis and irritable bowel, and few years ago I was rushed into hospital where I was told I had a twisted appendix because my abdomen was so badly swollen I literally looked like I was nine months pregnant, after eating a subway roll...so they operated only to find out there was nothing wrong with my appendix... I admit I was a big bread /subway eater, I would have a Subway roll rather than a meal, But I had to stop eating bread and gluten products as much as I could, because it made me feel so ill, but when I had a coeliac's test it came back negative, I believe this is because I stopped eating it, but every time I return and start eating bread products I am left in chronic pain and swollen abdomen. So the idea of eating bread and gluten and wheat products again just to get a positive test is frightening. I don't think I could cope with all the swelling pain and misery it causes me. But I'm also finding it harder to know what I can eat Because of these symptoms. There seems to be so much I cannot eat, I am finding it hard. I have never liked sweet stuff of fried food so I should be a stick insect but unfortunately I'm not. I have started cooking with gluten and wheat free products etc for the whole family. I have even tried looking for evening classes in cooking things like home-made bread -pastries cakes etc gluten and wheat free but to no avail so it's trial and error. I live most of the time with dull to sometimes severe aching pain in my upper side just below my ribs like a stitch. I don't want to go back to the doctor again just to be told if it doesn't agree with you don't eat it.

I have just woke up with the pain. I have pain under the left side of my rib cage when I take deep breaths. Went to emergency they did ekg,X-ray,vascular ultrasound, blood and urine the only thing that came back with an issue was a uti. I have diverticulitis and had c-diff last October. I have an intolerance to milk they told me now that I have ibs possibly. Also I have some bulging disc in the lower lumbar that is pushing on colon and stomach. And for the past week I realized that I have been feeling tightness below the knee now sure if it is swelling at times. Feels better with rest. Now to wake with pain below the sternum I do suffer from gastritis and gerd at times. So frustrated what is going on
