Dear All,
This week in particular, I have been suffering from pain in the very centre below my ribcage. so far, i think my appetite has decreased and my bowel movements are not consistant (though that could be due to my IBS), it kinda feels like what ever is in there is being attacked right left and centre, and in some cases its woken me up because of the pain. I have taken painkillers and its not going down at all. its like a nauseous pain but an aching one too. if you have ever been on a night out and drank too much but the next day you can physically feel your liver aching, it feels like that.
for context, im 20 and female and not pregnant. the pain sometimes makes me cough too.
Does this sound like I should call the doctor ASAP because ive never experienced anything like this in this area of my body before.
all advice would be most appreciated, im avoiding alcohol or anything hard to digest until further notice.
Many thanks

My friend had pain just like this in the middle of the night. She was sick too. The pain seemed to go worse and worse and spread to her back too. Panicking she went to hospital where they did some tests. They said it was some kind of muscle spasm and so of course the more you panic the worse it gets. You should always get checked at the doc though.

My doctor did an endoscopy and found the pain right behind the sternum was GERD. She prescribed Prilosec and I feel much better. It could have been a sludgy gall bladder, an infection with H. pylori (ulcer), but it was irritation and bleeding of the esopagus and the duodenum. The stomach itself is fine. I felt like I had a weight on my chest and when I drank anything hot it burned when the hot liquid hit a certain spot in the esophagus.

I have had this same pain for the last 5-6 years and I absolutely hate it. Sometimes it's just a constant aching pain and other times it's horrible and brings me to tears - I end up throwing up and nothing but nasty stomach bile comes out. (sorry) there's times i don't even want to eat because I don't want to go through the pain. I can literally dig my fingers into the spot and feel it get worse - sometimes it relieves the pressure. I have tried Zantac, Mylanta, Prilosec, etc. nothing works. The only thing that sometimes works is this stuff from market america - i forget what its called a little pink packet containing contents you mix with water and drink. i have had multiple ultrasounds, x rays, etc. one time the pain got so bad i heaved so hard i busted blood vessels in my eye. sucks - any new info from anyone??

I think I'm suffering the same thing. I have had a cold the past few days and I'm on the upswing. I woke up at 5am this morning with a pain right in the center below the ribcage. The pain is not constant, it comes and it goes within usually 30 seconds and lasts for 5-10 seconds. I drank water, thinking it was hunger pains. It seemed to help. It came back within 15 minutes, I tried water again, and same thing happened. When I stand up or sit up the pain feels like it's in my mid-back, same area. I have no health insurance, I'm a student, and can't afford to get any tests. My hope is that it will go away as some of you say it comes and goes.

I'm experiencing the same problems, pain in the upper abdomen in the center of my rib cage. I did some research and found one possibility is that I've contracted a strain of a stomach virus. Other possibilities are gastritis or a peptic ulcer. Basically, stick with acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain relief and stay away from foods that may upset the stomach, such as fatty/greasy foods, spicy foods, caffeinated beverages, mint and chocolate. Obviously, see your doctor if pain persists.

I had the exact same pain for about 3 hours(it woke me up at 4:00am), and went to the emergency room. They did blood tests and said I had a 22,000 white blood cell count and did a CT scan but I didn't have enough fat for them to see anything but inflammation around where my appendix would normally be able to be seen. So, I had my appendix removed shortly after the CT scan. They still don't know whether I really had an appendicitis, and they don't really know why it would've hurt in my lower ribcage and upper abdomen, but I don't hurt anymore, so it seemed to be a correct diagnosis. Ask your doctor to look there though, especially if you're lower right abdomen is tender to the touch along with the lower ribcage pain.

I have had the same pain for 4 years. An ultrasound revealed multiple gallstones. I have not yet had my gallbladder removed, but plan to do so soon. Pregnancy and other reasons for waiting so long. The pain and frequency got MUCH worse during pregnancy! This pain is terrible...hope gallbladder removal helps.

Same thing. It started last night and it's been with me all night and the following day.
I believe it's stress related because I've had this problem before if I remember correctly.
Last night I was crying a little bit, the night before I was crying ridiculously. So I wonder if it was just my crying that set it off with all of the other stress that I've been suffering for the past year and a half?
Well if it is stress, have a warm bath... a temperature that relaxes you and not one that boils you... hot baths don't relax your muscles quite as nicely as warm ones do.
Hope that helps! (If not then it's something internally wrong and you should just go to the doctor or find one online.)

I have been having a pain right below my ribcage,(sternum) and it sometimes feels when I breath that everything is tightening up. I feel like I need to take big deep breaths just to get in enough oxygen. I have had this pain for a few years but it went away for about 8 months after they took my Gall Bladder out. I have gone to the hospital a few times because I thought I was having a heart attach. The pain seems to go all the way up into my chest and really scares me. Thankfully the pain is not always so severe. I am starting to think I have cancer or something but all test are negative concerning heart,lungs,etc...Has anyone figured out what is causing this?

I had the same pain and it lasted for like an few hours and just died off. When it happened the next week I went to the Dr and he wasn't really sure what it was but I suggested IBS nd he said it was possible so he gave me Levsin to try next time it hurt. I've take it 2-3 times and it seems the pain goes away within like 30 mins so I guess it's working. He said if it does work then more than likely it's IBS and it's spasms that are causing the pain and that's what the medicine alleviates.

Try squeezing the juice of a lemon in a glass of distilled water. Sweeten to taste with GRADE B maple syrup (make sure it's Grade B), and add just a pinch of cayenne pepper. Stir and drink. It tastes great and will take care of the problems. I also had to reduce cheese and raw onion intake.

i have had this same pain for 2 weeks now it started as a stomach virus but the pain in my abdomen between rib cage is not going away. I had my gall bladder out 12 years ago they said i can still get stones even without it. I had a million blood and urine tests and they all came back great. I had an ultrasound and xray today to check for stones and possible kidney stones. of course theyll "read it today and the dr will get a report tomorrow or monday" grrreat an entire weekend of worry....ug! i hate to say it but im glad others of you have this pain i just want it to be nothing or something stupid and treatable. I have 2 young children and I dont want to have to worry...
hoping it gets better
