Was out on the beach in Malaysia after not being in the sun for a very long time. Applied sunscreen but didn't reapply, etc etc. My feet were the most burned afterward. Went to bed that night with chills and shivering, woke up and had swollen feet. It has been 3 days and while it looks like most of the burns have started to fade, my feet are still swollen. I am holed up at the hostel for now waiting it out, but I don't think that having to walk on them a couple of times a day to get food is doing me any favors.

Hi I am currently in the same situation but the back of my legs from my butt to my soles are red as a tomatoe and swollen. How long did the swelling last for?

First of all I feel your pain brothers and sisters! Secondly, it will get better in time!

These are remedies to help with the severe pain and help recovery:

1- This is the MOST important factor in dealing with the pain. If you have been laying down, especially if your feet have been elevated, move SLOWLY and sit for a minute before attempting to stand. After sitting for a minute, rise SLOWLY to your feet. Think like a sloth and really take your time in standing fully erect. Sure guys we all want to get erect as quickly as possible but sometimes taking our time with *ahem* the next step surely benefits

It will GREATLY reduce the pain when having to stand or walk. I was told that the problem is due to circulation and if you use slow methodical movements its not such a shock to blood pressure, which I was told by my DR is the cause of the pain.

2- Take three to four cold showers daily (if you can convince your partner to join you even better! Extra curricular activities are probably not on your mind atm but it does make shower time a lot more fun, especially if you drop the soap. Opps, dear can you get that for me it hurts so bad to bend over). Speaking of soap, use a lotion or moisturizer based soap, better yet use a moisturizing soap that also containes aloe vera. It also helps to not completely dry off, just for the simple fact it feels great, water cannot be absorbed through the skin so it has nothing to do with hydration. You're probably only pat drying anyway considering the pain involved in friction.

1-  This is the MOST important factor in dealing with the pain. If you have been laying down, especially if your feet have been elevated, move SLOWLY and sit for a minute before attempting to stand. It also helps to not completely dry off, just for the simple fact it feels great, water cannot be absorbed through the skin so it has nothing to do with hydration. You're probably only pat drying anyway considering the pain involved in friction.

3- Do NOT use petroleum jelly. After a shower and air drying use aloe vera based creams and if the friction of rubbing in a cream or gel is unbearable in those flaming hot areas use an aloe vera based spray or aerosol. Some of those creams, lotions, and sprays also contain lidocaine which will also help with the pain.

4- Use ibuprofen for the pain. It helps considerably but doesn't help as much as standing SLOWLY. Thats number one remedy for a reason. Truely it makes walking bearable, just give it a try!

All that being said, do not worry fellow light skinned warriors of the sun! The swelling will subside just as the high tide of the sea, which by the way, was probably part of the reason you are in this mess anyways. Who doesn't love that salty sea air and whooshing of the waves? It always makes me want to close my eyes and drift away into happy calming thoughts... BUT before I do I must take precautions so I do not end up in another swollen fiery mess as I had previously! Which brings me to the second part of my advices. How to enjoy the ocean all day or get a tan being light skinned:

1- Wear sunscreen or sunblock with an SPF of MINIMUM of SPF 30. Apply it to your entire body 30 minutes BEFORE you go out into the sun and then every hour after sun exposure religiously! If you go in the water apply sunscreen again immediately after drying off. If you have troubles getting your back or other hard to reach areas, ask a friend, or better yet ask that smoking hot guy or girl you have been checking out all day "I'll do you if you do me". The worst they will say is no, but in best case scenario you may have found a perfect partner in crime for a few drinks at the bar later on.

2- Bring a beach umbrella! You can still get a tan in the shade. Also you may think it looks silly but wearing a cotton shirt and pants greatly reduces the risk of skin cancer and burning, besides it will keep you cool too. If you are in the shade or wearing those really light cotton threads, still apply sunscreen, shade and super thin material is no match for the super powers of UVA and UVB!

3- Avoid direct sunlight between the hours of 11am and 2pm at minimum. Most recommendations are between 10am and 4pm. If you are completely dead set on direct sunlight between those hours, lay for 20 minutes on your belly and 20 minutes on your back. Do not exceed an hour. Seriously you are damaging your skin even with sunscreen on. Its better to head out early and enjoy the beach from 7am to 9am and then grab lunch (mimosa anyone?) or do something out of the sun until after 2pm.

4- Moisturize with a cream or gel after you are out of the sun! Even though you are out of the sun it is still effecting your skin for about an hour after exposure. You are doing your skin a favor by giving it a little moisturizer. I personally prefer aloe vera creams because my skin is sensitive.

Being fair skinned we look great with a nice tan and we all want a tan TOMORROW. But seriously it's not possible for us to be in the sun for 4 or 5 hours and not get burned to a crisp and looking like a cooked lobster. A great tan takes time and if we take shortcuts we will just end up in pain and suffering for in some cases 3 weeks! Wear sunscreen and go in the sun for 40 minutes per day (20 minutes on your back 20 minutes on your belly, better to start with 10 minutes per side until your Melanin levels have built up) in a week you will have an amazing HEALTHY tan. You can still enjoy being outside and being a sun worshipper in the shade or wearing more than just a bikini or shorts. Besides wearing a little more clothes leaves more to the imagination and can really spark the interests of people you are trying to attract. You look like a dork you say!? NOTHING is more embarrassing and dorky looking than a human lobster swelled to the max and sporting sun spots or boils. We know this from the experience, thats why we are here. BUT we can learn from our mistakes and take the necessary precautions for next time. I hope this has helped anyone who has come this far. Now lets get outside and enjoy that beautiful weather (in a *yawn* "responsible" way) my fellow fair skinned beauties and hunks

Thank you. Great explanation and common sense. My feet are swollen from a sunburn and only time helped. But now I know what's going on.

I got sunburned at the beach on Thursday... It is now Monday. At first it was just a burn and by Saturday it turned into a rash that was a purplish pink tint with tiny barely visible bumps. The worst part is the burn is down the back of my calf and behind my knee. Currently my calves and feet are swollen to almost double their size. I've been using aloe with lidocaine and 800 mg ibuprofen. Standing up and walking after lying or sitting for long periods is excruciatingly painful. It's like the skin is so tight and is about to burst, almost feels like your legs are broken. Slowly sitting up and gradually walking seems to help... After a bit I can walk with my knees bent slightly with minimal pain just discomfort. My dr called me in a steroid prescription for swelling, but I just took it a few hours ago and no results yet. Hoping this doesn't last much longer....

Also wanted to note that sitting with my legs straight in the bath in cool water helped ease the pain for a bit (helps you walk easier). & Noxemna (cleanser) took the sting out of the burn.

How long did it take to get back to normal for you? I, too was sunburned kayaking, but it is my knees. Had sunblock with me, never thought to apply it. This was yesterday and I can't walk today. It's like a million needles sticking in my knees and they're extremely tight and hot.
