I am really glad I have come across this site:
I just went on a 14 mile kayak river run and I got sunburn on my legs, knees, face, arms and neck. I have never experienced a burn to this level before. It is day 2 after and my ankles are swelled and my legs hurt so bad. I have been applying aloe lotion and vinegar on my skin about ever 3 hours for the past 2 days and I still can not bend my knees with out feeling like my sin is ripping off. It is so tight..
When I saw that my ankles swelling up made me think that I am pregnant. I am so very glad to see that this is a system from my sun burn. Woo I just hope it goes away soon. I have a trip to Paris coming up in 4 more days..

Me. too. Wore the big rimmed hat, and sunscreen all over, except the tops of my feet.
Now they are red and starting to swell. Actually the skin looks really tight and puffy. Thanks for letting us know this is a healing response. I'll sit tight for a while and relax.

I agree. I use SPF 50 and people laugh at me, but it works, when I remember to put on. I too am happy to see I am not the only this happens to.

Pauline, I've got to tell you that your message bright me back to memories of my father. He was a navy pilot, i was born in Pensacola, and my recollection is that word,(ithchitucnee), i recall the he and his pilot friends went on that river. I had never seen it before our since the first time i had heard it. We left Florida in 1974, so it's been awhile. I'm pretty sure, but without doing a little research, i believe it was Florida, it may have been Texas. But I'm pretty sure. Thanks fur the memories

i got sunburned with swollen legs + ankles aswell since 4-5 days. the first night it hurt so much i couldn't even sleep through. i was in the holidays - staying in bed was no option for me - and i walked around a lot although it hurt very much every morning i got up, so the swelling remaind and got even worse. i am back from the holiday since yesterday and have been lying in bed for nearly 24 hours with my legs put up on two big pillows. thankfully by now my feet are nearly their original size again and the pain is almost gone! so thats what i would recommend anyone dealing with this issue.

also i drank a lot of water to help the swelling go away and i put aloe vera gel on my skin to help it heal.

I’m currently going through this i went to the beach a few days ago applied sun screen to my face spf 30 and lower spf 15 on the rest on my body’s in hopes to get a little tan. I was out for 2 hours and my entire body is bright red like a lobster I’ve been putting on aloe and burn relief the first few nights I couldn’t sleep but now my left foot is completely swollen and my calf is 3x it’s normal size and I can barely move my toes. Horrible pain trying to get up out of bed but once I get to moving around the pain slowly goes away. I’ve found putting aloe with lidocaine in it along with ibuprofen helps with the pain but hasn’t descreaded any of the swelling. The swollen leg hurts to touch any gel or lotion so I found putting foaming menthol shaving cream on helps and keeps it cool.

Been here in FL since 2012, I’m olive skinned & have never really burned all my entire life (I’m 41 now). Made the mistake of going to the beach for about 5 hrs without sunscreen (have never needed it bf). But just experiencing the worst sun poisoning that I wouldnt wish on my worst enemy. It started out with the excruciating pain when attempting to stand (figured out to put legs down, fight the pain & lean in a little more increasing the bend angle & amount of pressure/weight, eventually stand to a squat position, & then upright, once upright it would dissipate after a few min. but repeat once I sat bk down). That, and like other’s, my skin feeling like it was ripping apart. Now day 4 since exposing myself to God’s outdoor Florida easybake oven, I’ve had Gatorade last night & that seems to have helped extremely with the muscle cramping. With that almost gone, now I’m experiencing swelling in both legs from the knee down (thankfully not my ankles or feet), skin is tight and feel like I have Popeyes arms for legs right now! It definitely freaks you out & worries you, especially when you’ve never experiencing something like this (and with all the extreme symptoms). Trying to avoid a trip to the ER & missing any work. Reading these comments and googling, it sounds like the swelling will go away on its own. I’m curious how long it lasted for others that have already been through this.

Hi! I've got sunburn on my leg. And it's really sore and swelled up. When I stand up, my leg feels like it's ripping apart, and it's like it turns blue. Should I be worried?
