I have been using .025% strength Retin A for a few years now, primarily for acne, but now that I am in my 40s, signs of age are showing up and I'm pretty sure the Retin A has helped with those some. I'm here asking this question because I still get acne, much less so than before, and the wrinkles are getting worse and worse. I've looked into things a little and I think I'd like to try Retin A .05%. This does do a whole lot more than the strength I am using now, correct? I would be worried about possible irritation etc though, so your tips would be appreciated.

There is evidence that .05% has a stronger effect, yes, however not by all that much. Given your situation and the fact that you are not mentioning any side effects from your current Retin A regime, I think you should consider trying this out. When you started on Retin A, you most likely built up gradually by using it only every other night or once every three nights. You can do something similar when you start on the 0.05%: use your previous cream two nights, then the new one on the third night, see how your skin handles that, and take it from there.

I did, and I noticed an immense difference!!! I know that some people say that it doesn't matter at all, but they are wrong, or at least it proved to be wrong for me. I still had acne on the .025% but now that I've switched over to .05%, my skin looks really good. I did one day this one day the old one for a while. I don't know whether going "cold turkey" would have been fine too because I didn't try that, but just follow your derm's advice and you'll be good.

That's fine and you will of course see more of an effect with the .05 %. Just how it works. But also, a higher strength will dry your skin out more than a lower strength retin a. Just something you have to keep in mind. If you get the whole flaking and dryness thing, maybe switch back again. If not, you're fine. You could try a heavy duty moisturizer in combination for one thing. Ask your derm about that and you'll probably be better than fine. Good luck!

Yes, that makes all the sense in the world to me!

Now, most people will be absolutely fine with a strength of .025 percent. There is no need whatsoever to use more if that does the trick for you. There is, after all, the potential that more will cause some dryness! You still get acne and you are developing some lines. Retin A is there in several strengths because different people have different needs. You sound like the ideal candidate for something stronger, so I would have no reservations about giving that a try whatsoever. Mind you, do remember to use a very good moisturizer.

It really varies from person to person: even 0.01% Retin A is great for some people. Higher strengths aren't for everyone and everyone's tolerance to retinoids varies individually. To some extent you can only find out what you really need by experimenting with it, and you have already done that. .05% can deliver radical results to anti aging, acne, and pore size and offer a healthy looking skin. It can also be severely drying. Trying it is certainly an option but you should also listen to and look at your skin and reevaluate as you go.
