I had this itch for about 15 years. My left labia majora was all enlarged and extremely itchy and painful. I tried a couple different doctors and all kinds of herbal self help stuff with 0% difference. Mine seems to get worse with my period. I did a lot of research on it and it is amazing how many women suffer from this. I finally found a forum where one women found the problem and was cured. So I took all this information in to a gyno. They did a biopsy of the area and it came up as hypertrophic squamous mucosa with mild hyper parakeratosis. That's a mouth full. I reserched it under this name and found nothing so fa,r unless I researched each word. The gyno told me that it was the same thing as squamous cell hyperplasia, which I found easily. She gave me a strong steroid ointment to heal it and a numbing ointment to releave the itch. She also gave me an antihistimine stonger then benadryl to take orally at night. I have been using them know for 1 1/2 weeks. My labia has almost returned to it's original size and the itch is just barely there at night. My suggestion is to call around and find a gyno who is familiar with this term befor you see them. I sincerely hope you find the answer.

The answer is in the ph of your body. Eat more alkalne foods. I suffered for 7 years. I drink huge amounts of lemon water daily to increase the alkaliness in my body. Do your research on alkaline foods, change your diet and hopefully your itching will go away. Our junk food western diet is very bad for our bodies!

I have also had burning and red and swollen inner labia for the last 5 months.  At times I've been tested positive for bacteria vaginosis and sometimes it's not.  Even if I can get rid of the discharge the burning remains.  I've tried steriod cream, Nystatin cream, yeast infection medicine, Flaygl antibiotic, Tindamax antibiotic, Cleocin vaginal suppositories, boric acid suppositories.  I've tried no underwear, no toilet paper, never use tampons, and no soap.  I thought it might be Lactobacillis after reading stuff on the internet but the Dr. looked under the microscope and didn't see any overgrowth of lactobacillis cells.  About the only thing I can think of is the Augmentin antibiotic that is used to treat Lactobaccilis even though the Dr. didn't think that was it.  The Flaygl antibiotic helped, but it didn't go away completely.  I also take 2 Pro-biotics daily (12 billion each).  This week I'm going to start the birth control pill in case it does have to do with my cycle.  Who knows, that could make it worse.  The sad part is having to use an ice pack before I go to bed so I can sleep to keep the burning down.  My. Dr. said something about a specialist in eastern Iowa.  Then I've read so many things about women seeing a specialist and they can't figure it out either.  Due to insurance, I won't be going to a specialist until January anyway.  For now my patient husband and I will wait and keep trying something until it finally goes away, but right now I'm not betting on it.  And BTW, I'm in a 13 year monogamous relationship and the 2nd Dr. I went to tested me for STD's without asking,  Nice...

I have this too. Mine started 2 months ago. It only happens for a few days directly between ovulation and the start of menstration. It's just a minor itch/burn usually but at certain times it gets so itchy and then I scratch and it tears and bleeds so easily. I have been doing a lot of reading and research and have come up with a few ideas which I plan to try, and thought I should share :) So I do like the above post regarding pH, this could be a factor, and is easily and benifitially changed by taking a multi-mineral supplement, there are liquid ones you add to water which are great and easy to comply with and will provide many benefits. Next is yeast. Yeast infections may occur at a subclinical level which can be fixed with drugs or naturally by cutting out or reducing wheat, sugar and dairy from your diet. Next is the idea of "heat" or general inflammation. With this I'll try relaxation techniques (reducing stress, irritability, anger), stopping smoking and eating more green vegetable and take some antioxidants and curcumin/tumeric/other herbal anti-inflammatory. I'm gonna cut of my fingernails so my scratching does less damage but I try not to scratch at all. I find cold compress helps. Also as a note this seems to happen at the exact point where theroetically progesterone would be at it's peak point for the month, thus I think there could also be some liver/adrenal congestion (sub-clinical of course). For the liver antioxidants and milk thistle will be my fix and for the adrenals B-vitamins and an adrenal support complex. More over I know that I have been generally deficient lately so I will be taking my multi-vitamin and adittional B & C vitamins, maybe an ACES complex. Those are my ideas so far. Hopefully they may offer me or others some benefit!

I have had this before, was treated for bv (bacterial vaginosis) and havent had it for months, today i got it again but i dont swell up until after i itch, and then i wish i hadn't. Go to a clinic or gp for a quick test if not its very possible that it may be eczema as it starts with itching (possibly caused by eczema) and then as result of itching you swell up, are uncomfortable and it burns. I also am due to start my period soon.

Same issue as most. But I'm not sexually active with partner yet. It ONLY happens directly after my period stops. Lower swelling, irritation, burning/itching mostly. NEVER a weird discharge that I've noticed, other than the ending of period color changes. I also find that right when it happens certain toilet paper makes it even worse. I thought for a while it was the brand I was buying so I changed it. It only happened after, never before my period. There is no smell or anything like that. Just irritation and hard swelling. Very uncomfortable. I've googled most things people mentioned and none have been spot on...is there anything to take that makes it stop fast? Tends to happen during the worst times (does not happen after every period either).

Telling girls they have herpes is not the solving any problems! I am still with the guy who I lost it to, and he respectively lost it to me too. Don't say people have things that serious when they might not.

You can have genital herpes for years before realising that you have it. I have all these symptoms currently and just found out its general herpes. Go speak to your doctor anything that hurts down there should be helped.
