Hi, I'm 22 and had my tonsils and adenoids out 6 days ago day 1 wasn't so bad because of the meds given at the hospital. Day 2 was AWFUL! I threw up from 1- not eating and 2- The pain meds vicodin. Day 3-4-5 I was ready to meet my maker. This is the worst thing i have ever been through and I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy!! I couldn't eat pudding, applesauce, or anything with consistency it's even worse when you wake from sleeping. I'm on day 6 and so far so good all I had for pain is extra strength Tylenol. I managed to have some cream of wheat this morning and some chicken soup and later I'll try some cottage cheese and maybe feel a whole lot better all i drink is water and hot tea anything else burns like hell! I even suck on sugar free jolly rancher once the sting wears off it taste really good I've read on here that some people ate toast and eggs right after surgery that is bullcrap! I now have yellow and white stuff where my tonsils were I guess that's normal healing at least i hope.. Call me a sissy but this is def for the birds. I hope you all feel better.

Im 20 and I had my tonsils and adenoids takin out on 8/17/09. This past week has been the worst week of my life. I did not anticipate this much pain from this surgery. What i really didnt expect are the horrible horrible headaches I have all day long. And the stiff neck pain I have with my headaches.

Day of surgery- I woke up from the surgery and they gave me apple juice to drink which was pretty good and things werent too bad then I went home and was hoping the whole recovery would be like this. It def has not been.

Day 1-4- My throat pain was not bad at all these days. Actually didnt bother me at all excpet when I was getting brave and tryin to down large bites of food at a time. My headaches are excrutiating though. Its crazy. I have never had headaches and neck pain like this ever. And for the first few days I also had really bad jaw pain.

Day 5-6 The headaches have been awful still. I woke up one night at around 12am in complete agony. and after i ran out of lortab i was taking childrens motrin which your not supposed to take so i had to switch to liquid tylenol which didnt do as well as the motrin. But that night i woke up crying because of the pain i caved and took the motrin just so i could sleep a little bit more. I finally am able to swallow pills so im now taking extra strength tylenol which is doin pretty good. Now I have started coughing and its killin my throat and it kept me up all night once. My dad ended up coming downstairs because he could hear me coughing and made me take some robitussin.

Day 7 (today)- I think part of my scab on the right side of my throat is coming off an when food or water touches that part of my throat it feels like being poked with a needle. Its a god awful pain. I didnt eat the whole day until my dad came home and forced me to eat soup. I ate half a pack of ramen just to make him happy and didnt eat anything else. My water intake today hasnt been that good either because of the pain. He is getting mad at me about it but he just doesnt understand how painful it is. And im not in pain right now and I just want to enjoy it for a little bit more before i have to do something to make myself hurt more. My headache has still been lingering with me all day. Has anyone else had problems with severe headache after their tonsillectomy? Its in the back of my head too.

I am praying that my turning point is coming up. Im am so fed up with this recovery. Honestly so far it has not been worth it. But I really hope that will change when I am fully healed. But parents I will say that if your child needs to have this done..do it when they are young..please. My parents said the docs have been sayin since I was little that they should consider doing it and they never did and I really wish they had. I would not have to go through this right now if they had.

hey in response to your neck pain, i've experienced the same exact thing. i'm not sure it's entirely avoidable. i had it because i needed to hang my head low in order to relieve the strain on my throat and scabs in the back of my throat. however constantly straining my neck like that resulted in my neck pain. my neck felt a lot better when i let it roll back but then i could feel my scabs starting to stretch which was definitely not too comfortable. can't say the same for your headaches, i'd have them but they would come and go without much discomfort to me, everyone reacts differently.

Hi,

I'm a 21 year old girl and currently on day 6 post-op!
Day 1: Slept in hospital and had an IV on my hand, that hurt me more than my throat. Managed to eat icecream/yogurt.
Day 2: Same as day 1.
Day 3: Massive jaw pains, super swollen uvula which made me feel like i was suffocating. Major ear ache. Managed to drink a lot of water. Tried to eat mashed potatoes but failed as it got stuck to the back of my throat.
Day 4: The pain increased so much, i called the Dr twice that day and increased my pain killers. I also took another pill called voltaren, that's the best of them all. (although u must eat or else u get mouth ulcers...i ate a lot..but 3 little ulcers showed up:s) I took one before i went to sleep and slept straight between 2am and 10am. Obviously i woke up in agony, my throat was super dry. Ears were pounding big time!

Day 5: WORST DAY SO FAR! i didnt sleep a lot from day 4 to day 5. I had at least 3litres of water today and lots and lots of liquids. The pain was excruciating but drinking and eating icecream really helped. Later in the evening the pain increased..between 6pm and 12pm i felt like i was dying. I took voltaren at midnight but by 2am the pain was back and intense...so basically i havent slept tonight. Eventhough i had minimum 3 litres of water my mouth is dry every 5minutes:S
Part of my scab fell aswell, only a little bit, and OH MY GOD...that was painful..it felt like my ears/throat were burning...there's stll a lot of scab to fall off...hopefully it wont always be this painful. The smell is horrendous.

Im so tired, but worried to death if i fall asleep as when i wake up the pain is terrible!
Oh and i sound deaf when i speak....i havent really spoken for the last few days... i made a huge effort to speak on day 3 and started bleading:s

Good luck everyone!

Hi all, I'm a 19 year old guy, and just had my tonsils out on Tuesday, 9/8/09. I don't know where all this pain that people are talking about comes from because I definitely haven't had it.

Day 1 (after surgery) - Woke up in the hospital with a dry mouth not being able to swallow. Got released from the hospital after most of the anesthesia wore off. Felt like c**p for the rest of the day.
Day 2 - Not able to eat anything because of the throat pain, did manage to drink a half bottle of water.
Day 3-4 - More water intake and a few cups of jello and a few popsicles and use of the ice collar really helped.
Day 5 (today) - Ate scrambled eggs followed by a bottle of water and went down with ease without much pain, not using painkillers.

I'm assuming my scabs will be falling off soon reading everyone else's stories, so we'll see. I've lost 8 pounds so far. I can talk after i take my tylenol w/codeine and it's much easier to eat something during then. I've had 3 full nights of sleep, only waking up maybe once or twice a night to take a quick drink of water and to spit. Managed to brush my teeth for the last 2 days, and used mouthwash sparingly.

Hi. I am a 23 yo woman. I had my tonsillectomy on the 17th. I ate half of a burger right after the surgery and felt fine. I do not handle medication, especially anesthesia very well so hours later it was not so fun. I vomited profusely for the latter part of that day. The next day I felt surprisingly a little better. I ate some broth and a few saltines and had a jello cup and a popsickle. I experienced a little nausea. The third day felt not so good. I felt horrible and nauseous the entire day. The fourth day felt a little better and then fifth day a little worse again I ate chicken bits in chicken broth both days. The sixth day and seventh days I had a little improvement with the nausea and continued to eat solids although really didn't eat much the seventh day but broth(food just seemed awful). All of these days, I relied heavily on popsickles and jello in order to take my meds and keep them down. I drank tons of water from day one. I also had some gatorade to help with the limited eating. Today is my eighth day which was not so good I again didn't really eat anything and started to have a lot of pain on my right side of my throat (I believe on my soft palate right next to my uvula which is still huge and def in some pain). I think maybe my scabs are coming off and it feels like my throat is being dry shaved. I have been gargling with salt water for the past few days because I read it helps. I don't think i am going to get much sleep. I really haven't been really getting more than 3 hours of sleep at a given time and for past 4 days I am in pain when I wake up due to a dry throat. I also experienced some weird back pain on the 4th? day. I think it's because I have been sleeping on the couch. I also feel pain in my jaw and on my lower right back molar. I am not sure if a nerve was irritated but it makes me a little nervous. Has anyone else experienced this? The pain I am feeling is bad but its not the worst I have had. I had an oophorectomy last January because I had a basketball size mass twisted around my ovary and fallopian tube so I try to remind myself of that whenever the pain gets really bad. It helps to get through it when I put it in persepecitve. It also helps to read everyone's post and know I am not alone. thanks everyone!

I'm 19 and on Day 5 of my recovery.

I've been reading all over the internet about tonsillectomy post-op, but my experience hasn't really been like what I've read.
It definitely hurts to swallow, but I've eaten a sandwich today. I'm thinking this is the down time before it starts getting really bad. I had a peritonsillar abscess over the summer that put me in the hospital for a few days and my Doctor said I probably experienced the same or more pain with that, so maybe I'm just used to it?

I can't open my mouth wide enough to see all of the back of my throat, but I saw some of it and it looks white.

My problems are that my ears definitely hurt! I sleep with my mouth open which dries it out and makes my lips bleed. I taste blood a lot and this bad taste when I'm eating solid food, but not so much when I eat soft foods. Weeiirdd.. My nose is stuffed up, but I have no idea if that's because of the surgery.. doubt it. Hydrocodone makes me want to vomit every time I take it and its felt like I was going to throw up the back of my throat a couple times. I haven't done anything for the past 5 days except watch movies and facebook.

I'm over it, but I know its going to be worth it and not having tonsillitis every 3 months is going to be nice.

I'm 23 and on day 5 of recovery.

It's bad :( My girlfriend and my family dont wanna come near me due to the smell from my mouth, which is also annoying to me thanks to this horrible taste all the time. I've been drinking about 2-3 litres of water everyday, and eating pretty normally. I actually had fish&chips on the night of the operation. Eating isn't too bad s long as you chew like hell and wash every mouthful down with water. However...CRISPS (chips for you americans) are the best - they go to a warm wet much in your mouth and slide on down, tis great. Was also told to chew chewing gum by the hospital to help ease jaw pain.

The worst thing by far, and something I wasn't told about is the uvula... omg could it be bigger? Everything I lie down it blocks my nose forcing me to breathe through my mouth then boom...9 hrs of sleep with your mouth open = a bone dry mouth and makes the first hours or so in the mornings absolute agony. Gooing to try and sleep with my head elevated tonight, see if that helps.

A piece of white stuff came off when brushing my teeth today, no bleeding and seems to have eased the swollen feeling thats there.

Taking paracetamol+ibuprofen every 4hrs or so. Pains not too bad, mornings are the worst.

Best advice is to eat normally, sleep elevated, and drink rediculous amounts of cold cold water. Just hope my uvula will go down eventually and I can breathe and talk normally :p

Hey, 22 yrs old female, tonsillectomy.
I got my tonsils out wednesday, dec 2, 2009, I am currently on day 5. Right before I went into surgery, my doctor told me that I will have to force myself to drink water after I wake up, no matter how bad it hurts. Thats what I did! I threw up 4 times the first day, from the drugs I had in me. I was shaking, and in pain, it was definitely not pleasant. The doctor told me to exercise my muscles by my throat, that will help the healing. So I've been talking (albeit very softly), moving around, drinking plenty of Gatorade, eating ice cream, jello, pudding, applesauce as much as possible. I am only taking Tylenol for the pain, and I am still doing fine. I think the scabs are starting to fall off, but I am not sure about that. Don't have anything warm, and if you shower don't use too hot water, the steam is not good for your throat. Although it still hurts, I think I am doing pretty well. After all, it was a very invasive surgery, so you have to take things slow, but a positive attitude helps! :-) Taking it for what it is, instead of really concentrating on the pain just makes it worse. When you are hungry, starving, think you can't go another step without solid food, think about people who fast! Its not pleasant, but if you set your mind to it, it is doable. Of course, I can not wait to eat normally, but the more you hold out now, in the long run it will pay off, and you will heal faster.
Also, I am a big coffee drinker, and had a hard time not drinking my coffee in the morning. What I did instead, is that I got starbucks coffee ice cream, and that's what I have for breakfast :-) My roommates are so jealous of me for my 'diet' right now, haha :-)
So for everyone in pain: hang in there, it will get better. Remember not to loose yourself in your pain, otherwise it will consume you! Swallow a lot, and with time, the pain will get better.
All the best! :-)

I posted this yesterday...that night at 10pm i got a bleed...the whole left side scabs fell off in a piece and i was bleeding for 2hrs straight. Went to the emergency room straight away of course and they tried to stop the bleeding with hyrodogen peroxide gargling but it didn't work. They called in the on call ENT surgeon and I had to go back to emergency theatre before I bled out :(

I lost nearly 3 pints of blood, half of which they had to suction out of my stomach!

I'm okay now and back home after a day in hospital again but i'm am serious when I say that was the scariest night of my life. Choking and drowning on my own blood. I don't mean to scare anyone but it can happen, I was one of those 1-2%. I'm told it was caused by a small local site infection which loosened the scab. I'm on more painkillers and a course of antibiotics and they say I should be fine and it won't happen again. Left me shaken and scared though. Everything was going great, little pain and eating nicely, I did nothing wrong, I was just unlucky... good luck to everyone

17 year old female. Got my tonsils out last Friday (12/11) and have been miserable since. The first day or two were easy and I thought everyone had been exaggerating the pain. The on day 3 up till now (6), it hit me. My ears are pounding (i found that over the counter ear pain drops REALLY help) and I basically have had to settle into a little routine of sleeping for two hours, taking my vicodin, sucking on Popsicle till the vicodin kicks in and then trying to get some broth down.
The only thing I'm worried about is for the vicodin, the doctor said 1 to 2 pills every 4-6 hours, but on the bottle it says don't take more then five a day. I have to take the 2 every 3.5 hours to get even a little relief. Is this dangerous or does anyone have any recommendations for a better painkiller?

Omgosh that's so crazy. My boyfriend had his surgery on the 1st of Dec and he ended up going in for emergency surgery after having crazy bleeding too. They had to pump his stomach also. He hasn't had much pain since. Now I got mine out on last week wed, but I'm about to post about mine.

I am a 30 year old woman and I had my tonsils and adenoids removed 9 days ago. I am still on prescription pain meds and today was the first day I had "solid" food. I had spaghetti with butter. I have been living on Jello, yogurt, sherbet and ice cream and of course drinking like a mad woman. My ice pack was my constant companion fro days 1-7 and on an off on days 8-9. I am getting frustrated at not being able to do anything. My husband has taken over all of my responsibilities as a housewife/mom of a 3 and 4 year old and I am grateful. I do what I can, but I am so weak from not eating and so nauseated and dizzy from the pain meds. I tried to go without them, but so far it's too painful for Tylenol to touch. Perhaps tomorrow I will try again. I wish my body were the type to heal in 5 days like I have read with others. Just have to push through this and do a lot of praying!!
God bless all of you

Hiya im an 18 year old and i had my tonsils removed 6 days ago.
The day of my tonsilectomy i didnt feel extreme pain, however when the nurse offered my toast and tea i became nauseous and very hot, i tried a little bit of the toast but couldnt take it- mainly because of the sick feeling in my stomach. That evening i couldnt eat my dinner either however the nurse encouraged me to eat my pudding- which was custard and found this to be suprisingly soothing. Also at the corner of my mouth there is quite a lrage slit and this prevents me from opening my mouth very much, im guessing this is where the instrument was to keep my mouth opening during surgery. The day after my op and the days to follow went really well, too well i thought as i was eating bacon sandwiches and i even had a chinese.
Today i woke up and my throat had like a throbbing sensation mostly on the left hand side, when i swallowed the pain was unbearable. Throughout the day the amount of pain in my throat has came and gone but about half an hour ago i got another throbbing pain in the left side, with pain down my neck and jaw. I find it really difficult to move my neck. When i look in my throat i see like a white creamy texture at the back but i cannot see any scabs as yet. Ive heard that scabbing should start after 5 days or so, and im a little anxious that mines hasnt. Any similar stories?
Anyway all the best to everyone, we're all in the same boat i guess.
