I had my surgery on the 25th so I guess I am on day 8. Up until day 3/4 I thought I was in agony then came days 5-7 now THAT was agony, I was waking up every night for at least 2 hours in agony taking tramadol to try and make the pain go away and was worried I was going to run out of codeine! I'm on day 8 now and still have like 6 codeines left and the pain seems to have eased away overnight apart from having woken up this morning coughing up rust coloured phlegm/blood which I guess means I must've had a slight bleed during the night when some more of one of the scabs came off? I can feel the pain going into my ear just as I said the pain seems to have eased off so must definitely be paracetemol and codeine time (I've been mixing my meds...a lot). Oh yeah and food wise I ate jelly on day 1 which took like an hour then 3/4 of a piece of toast on day 2 and since then have had toast every day even though it takes me like half an hour to eat one slice! I've also had: scrambled eggs, ice-cream, potato, omelette, jelly, a bit of a slice of pizza, some pasta and soup (lentil and chicken broth). The hardest bit thing to eat was the bits of chicken in the chicken broth and pasta with pesto!

I'm 19 and had my tonsils taken out 6 days ago and this has been the most pain I've ever been in in my life, and I've gone through my fair share of broken bones and hospitalizations. The first day back was okay, was still pretty out of it from the pain meds from the hospital. The second and third day were pretty awful, but as long as I had my meds on hand the pain was controllable but swallowing was nearly impossible, I put up a huge fit about it and nearly cried after every swallow. The fourth day was by far the worse, I woke up feeling nauseous and spent half the day with my head in the toilet puking up blood and bile since there was nothing in my stomach to throw up, was from the blood and the meds so I switched to extra strength tylenol and I've been taking that since. Yesterday and today (days five and six) have been better, but now the scabs are starting to fall off and it stings to take the medicine or even drink room temperature water.

How have other people fared with talking? I really haven't spoken at all since my surgery, save for a few whispers. I have my boyfriend and parents taking care of me so since there's not much of a reason to talk I just save myself the pain. Mostly just hand gestures and writing stuff down on paper. My tongue is just so swollen and numb it doesn't even function it's just like, there.

I'm also amazed at what some of you have been able to eat. The first few days I stuck to Jello and Freeze pops, yesterday I had some tomato soup and I made a smoothie, but they're still very difficult to swallow. I couldn't imagine trying to tackle some actual food right now.
The pain in my ears has been one of the worst parts, besides the insatiable hunger and thirst. Everything I see on tv I crave, mostly pizza (every other commercial is for pizza, legit) and root beer. I've even been craving a burger and I've been a vegetarian my whole life so I don't know what's going on. I've lost a lot of weight but I'll probably eat it all back as soon as I can eat food again.

This experience has just sucked, overall. Worst thing ever. My doctor did not prepare me for the pain, he was like, "oh after about 10 days you'll be back to normal." Yeah, that was BS. Not only did I miss my Spring Break in order to have this lovely operation, but I haven't been able to get any of my HW done and I'm supposed to drive back to school in five days and I really just don't see that happening.

Overall, I'm just sooo glad I found this site. It was weirdly comforting to know that I'm not the only person who has had a near death experience thanks to these lovely tonsils. I wouldn't wish this pain upon my worst enemy. Worst thing that has ever happened to me, period. Good luck to everyone else who has gone through/will go through this pain.

I'm 20 years old, and I got my tonsils out almost a week ago. The first few days the pain was pretty bad but I fought through it and constantly drank water. Also, after a day or so I started eating regular meals and everything has been going really well, I stopped taking pain medicine and I feel almost no pain (except when I yawn). My doctor told me, despite what most doctors say, that eating and drinking normally after the surgery helps to heal faster, and comparing my experience to most people on here I think he's on to something. My only real complaint is my uvula is a bit swollen and black on the tip (anyone know why it's black?). It's a bit annoying but nothing bad.

I am 17 and i had my Tonsilectomy and my Adienoids removed last friday. The day i came come from the hospital wasnt that bad neither was the day after but day 3 & 4 were pretty painful. One mistake i made was having a milkshake if i can tell you one thing dont drink milk or eat anything with milk until u feel at least 90% better i almost choked the nights when i drank a milkshake or had cereal. Yesterday when i woke up i had to spit and i was spitting blood which for me is when the scabbs are starting to fall off that is until i eat some water ice then the bleeding stops. My tongue feels pretty numb the doctor said keep chewing gum so when i am awake i usually have gum in my mouth. My uvula is quite big but i heard in a few days it should be getting back to normal size. The pain med sucks the worst taste in the world they prescribed me with liquid Hyrdocodone APA it stinks no matter if u mix it i am gonna try to see if they can prescribe me something better today any thoughts?

I got my adenoids and tonsils removed on Wed 14 April. Today it is day 5 including surgeon day. For me everysingle day has been terrible. Right after the cirgury I saw the death cuz I was not used to the anesthesia and I tried to swallow and started spiting blood.

I made the mistake of eating ice creams and milk the firsts days. I wont recommend doing this as it will only create mucus and its freaking horrible. I also have not been able to sleep normally since the cirgury. I can barely sleep for an hour before I had to wake up with pain.

Yesterday I felt like flame and tried to spit it and I felt a big thing coming out of my mouth and it was my uvula, like a big ping pong ball on my tongue. NO kidding I have not been able to sleep, I am choking with this every time I try.

This is really horrible, and this can mostly happen to me. So if you are doing this operation, try to keep it cool after the cirgury, do not eat diarys and hopefuly you do not have a big uvula like me that is choking me to death.

I hope I can survive this misery. I cry.

now on day 6, im 18 and the pain has reduced a little bit. The worst thing that get to me is the scab things that build up in the back of your throat., and the horribleeee taste it puts out. I couldnt drink anything without throwing it up. Now that one gagged me and i spit it up, the other one is still there, im feeling better and the nasty taste is not so bad. As miserable as this is it will be better in the long run. Hope everyone recovers great and godblesss :-)

I'm 28, on day 15, and the scabs still haven't fallen off completely. Actually, they haven't fallen off at all, instead the scabs seem to be melting away very very VERY slowly. This is driving me crazy! I was supposed to be back at work yesterday, but I don't want to go back as long as I have this smelly white stuff in my throat. Why is it taking so long? I had a bleed on day 6, and I wonder if it made my recovery slower.

I'm 22 years old, and I’m on day 5 of my Tonsillectomy!
Day 1 was pretty bad for me. Woke up at the hospital feeling ok, not to sick just a sore throat. However, that night I started spitting up a few clots of blood and then the bleeding stopped. So I decided going to the hospital was pointless. Also, vomited that same night due awesome Loratab, or whatever.
Day 2-3 not to bad ate pretty well.
Day 4-5 extreme pain! The scabs formed around day 3-4, and now they look like a small hole where the scabs are. I don’t know what to do the scabs just dissolve? Or do you really spit them fully out? Because I feel like im gagging on them now, and what happens when the scabs come off? Is the pain somewhat better? Do you form another scab? The pain in the ears is horrible when eating and swallowing ANYTHING! I feel like I have needles in the back of my throat, im guessing it's from the scabs coming off! I'm completely and utterly disguised by this entire process! I didn’t believe it to be this horrible.

well, I'm only 14 years old but I thought I'd give my two cents on this topic. Today is um....day 7 since having my tonsils out. I'm feeling pretty good. Day one I threw up twce becasue of the anesthesia, but after that I mostly slept. Day two and three were such a blur. I know a few people came to see me, but I'm not sure how that smoothed over.
Day four however was horrible. I saw that all these people were saying drink only water, and I have to say this could be a bad idea. On day 4 I woke up feeling very dizzy and could barely stand up, and after hours of crying and forcing down a bowl of ice cream, then throwing it back up several times, my dad called the doctor. They said my blood sugar levels bottomed out becasue the water depleated it all out. Then said that I needed to be having as much sugar as possible.
So at that point my mom starts rummaging through the pantry abd pulling out all the foods that were soft and had high fructose corn syrup in them. We discovered that a crused up popcicle in a cup with a bit of gingerale does the trick wonderfully. Then within probably 45 minutes I was feeling fine, and went to the pool to see some friends.
Day five was better, still sore, not on as much pain meds, bored to tears, and hungry for some steak (which my family ate in front of me :-( )
Day 6 was great. Yeah, I was sore, but determined to get oiut of the house. So My mom took me shopping and I spent some babysitting money, and that made me pretty happy.
Then today, Not sure what's in store yet since it's only about 8:00, but it feels like it's gonna be a good day.
For everyone getting this done:
1: sugary foods/liquids
2: a COOL mist humidifier helps in the night from coughing and keeping scabs moist
3: Lots of things to do
Hope this helped a little bit :-D

This is my first time on here so I replying to everyone. I am a 44 year old woman that has had many surgeriers and has birthed 2 babies and i have never experienced anything like this before. It has been the worst experience of my life. I am one week out from surgery. I had to go back to doctor yesterday because I was having a hard time swallowing and breathing. My uvala was swollen and he immediately sent me back to the hospital and hooked me up to an iv and iv steroid. It helped the swelling almost immediately. I can now swallow and breath a whole lot better. I am not able to eat very much at all and drinking is not coming so easily for me eihter. I cannot find anything that taste good to me. I am a Propel drinking girl and that taste like i am drinking something so bitter that I can't stand it. I had a terrible weekend. I have been in bed for 7 straight days now. That is not my nature. I get up to use the bathroom and been back to doctor twice. I go back again Friday because my steroid iv should be wearing off by then. If he sees any sign of it it swelling back up I am insisting that he send me right back to the hospital for another steroid iv. I had a crying meltdown this morning because i can't get releif in any form. I don't know if this is scabs coming up but i am coughing up clumps of this gosh awful looking stuff and when i wake up in the moring i feel like my mouth has been left in a bowl of mud. It is extremely gross. That is when i lost it this morning. I couldn't talk without gaging on that stuff and I couldn't get it all out and so i just had a melt down.

I know i am rambling, but I have to say i would never wish this on anyone. I am telling anyone that is an adult, unless they tell youit is a mattier of life or death I would seriously think before having this done.

I am 17 years old and am on day 4 of recovery (including the day of surgery, since I had my tonsillectomy in the morning).
The first two days were pretty much pain free, and I'm still not suffering too much from throat pain. My ears and jaw hurt more than my throat does. The most annoying thing is definitely the mucus and scabbing; the permanent taste in my mouth is absolutely disgusting! I'm not on any pain meds because I am allergic to codeine and a few other things like that, which is okay because I would rather not get the nausea that accompanies medication as I already feel sick enough from the taste in my mouth. I have found that chewing just peppermint flavoured gum helps with the taste, but you do have to put a fresh piece in as soon as the flavour wears off for it to be effective. Also, mixing some baking soda with warm water and just 'slooshing' it around in your mouth (do NOT gargle) can get rid of the taste for anywhere up to three hours I have found. I have been eating solid foods since day 1, and anyone who says that you shouldn't eat things like toast is TOTALLY wrong. While soft foods are good, hard foods are better. I have been eating toast for breakfast every day, and yes, it hurts a lot. But it's honestly the best thing you can do for yourself. And there's no saying you can't have something soft and cold to soothe your throat afterwards! So for example, with every hard/solid/scratchy meal I eat, I follow up with an iceypole or some custard or something like that. The sooner you eat normally, the sooner the scabs will form, and the sooner they form, the sooner they fall off, and the sooner they fall off, the sooner you are all healed up! I think my uvula is slightly swollen, but nothing too major. I'm just gagging from the scabs more than anything; it is very hard to speak because they rub together resulting in me dry reaching. I am praying I don't have any bleeds or need to vomit at any stage, ouch! Good luck to everyone, and try and eat as normally as possible!

I'm 19 and I had my tonsils removed 4 days ago. I have no idea what sort of crazy things the doctors were telling you, but my doctor was extremely knowledgeable. First of all, no dairy products; it coats your throat and it makes it worse due to phlegm. I'm on day 4 and I feel amazing. I was out playing soccer today.

The first 3 days consisted of me drinking protein shakes (powder mixed with water, not milk) and eating jello. On day 3, I had some tomato soup that was water based instead of milk based. I also had some steamed eggs and that worked well. I've been taking liquid oxycodone/acetominophen, and that works somewhat well to dull the pain. It's still somewhat painful to swallow, even on the pain meds, but by no means excruciating. I never threw up or felt nauseous nor have I experienced any bleeding either. No infections so far.

The only thing that was really annoying about this entire procedure was that my uvula was very swollen for the first three days, and that was impeding my ability to fall asleep. But I've been sleeping soundly; 8-10 hour nights, and I'd wake up periodically to go to the bathroom and then drink a bottle of water.

In order to not get depleted of electrolytes, I've been drinking an isotonic solution. I add about a teaspoon of sodium chloride and potassium chloride to about a liter of water. I drink about 6-8 liters of this stuff per day, ensuring that my throat is always moist, even at night.

I think the reason why everyone here is having these huge issues is that people are trying to do too much, too fast. That, or they've received terrible advice from their doctor. But so far, on a scale from 1-10 on awefulness, this procedure has been a 3.5. By far one of the easier surgical procedures I have endured.
