Hi all, I am on day 9 post op and let me just say it has been a rocky road for me. I have a couple questions for people who are already recovered: I think my scabs started falling off on day 5. They are not gone yet. Is this normal? How much longer will it take for them to be completely gone? Another thing that is bothering me is that it hurts really bad everytime a piece comes off. Did anyone else experience this? This is by far the most painful day yet. When does the extreme pain really start to go away?

Hi im a 19 year old female who had her tonsils removed on the 30th April due to tonsil stones. This has definitely not been a pleasant experience.
Day of operation - spent the night in hospital and everything seemed fine. No nausea, no huge pain and I could eat pretty normally
Day 1 - I went home from surgery and was prescribed some morphine substitute and to have panamax. It really didn't hurt that much and I was walking around. I had toast for breakfast even but by dinner i had to have some soup
Day 2 - Pretty much the same as day 1. Drank a little less water though which couldn't have been good. I even went to pancake manour and got two pancakes down i felt so good.... Saw some blood in my saliva after i brushed my teeth
Day 3 - i started coughing up mucous and this got me a bit worried since i was worried the stress of the coughing could damage my stitches. Food stared getting stuck at the back of my throat which is SO ANNOYING and is still friggin annoying because it makes my breath pong! I slept for a good portion of the day and had no trouble sleeping at night thanks to the morphine substitute- i lost a kilo since the day of the operation
Day 4 - let the nausea begin! I woke up and went outside to have weetbix and I was so close to vomiting. I ran back to bed and slept until 6pm after having my morphine substitute medication. Could only eat soup. After I brushed my teeth I coughed up maybe around 1.5 teaspoons of blood? It was bright red so i was worried but when my mum checked down my throat my scabs weren't bleeding so she just told me to go to bed. I didn't have much water at all
Day 5 - Woke up and had some water and in doing so swallowed all this white sh*t which i believed was some little bits of scab...NOT A GOOD IDEA!!! Vomited up my last night's dinner, my morphine tablet and the one spoonful of pumpkin soup i got into my mouth before i chucked. It was hell. I thought my stitches were going to break. I can never tell when I am nauseous or just starving. I got it wrong that time.....and same at dinner. Vomited up the one spoonful i got to eat of my soup, my second morphine substitute tablet and my lunch. woohoo! my sister kept telling me how much my room stank because of my bad breath caused by the combination of food stuck at the back of my throat and the scabs. That was by far the shittiest day of them all - I lost a kilo since day 4
Day 6 - I didn't have the nauseous feeling as bad but it was still lingering there....I  decided to come off my morphine substitute since the panamax had been working pretty well and I didn't fancy chucking another one up. Room still stank and I refused to let my boyfriend come visit me because I am so self conscious of my "god-awful" breath which causes my room to pong. I didn't really eat much soup but i started sucking on ice and drinking more water. I managed to keep some jelly and beef stew down :D - i lost another kilo
Day 7 (today)- Woke up to nauseous feeling which sucked ass. i thought i had recovered since day 6 wasn't that bad but ohhh no it came back today. Once again i was confused as to whether it was because i was STARVING or because of a bug or something....I've managed to keep down a bit of jelly and a little bit of beef stew. Every time I stand up i feel dizzy which made me nearly fall over in the shower. I'm gonna try to get some spaghetti down tonight since everything gets stuck at the back of my throat anyway and I lost another kilo since day 6 so my mum is getting worried at the drastic weight loss. Most of my scab is still at the top of my mouth which is so goddamn annoying because I'm sure it's a major cause in my bad breath dilemma and I can feel it every time I swallow. I'm so scared about it gradually falling off though since when i swallowed some of it in day 5 i puked up every meal...
I really hope the rest of you heal/ed well and that your experiences took a drastic change for the better :)

Im on day 7 after my tonsil & adenoid removal. How has recovery been for you so far. I have that white stuff in my the roof of my mouth behind my uvula too. I have a horrible gag reflex so this is a nightmare for me. I think my scabs started falling off, was it painful with each piece for you also. I really regret going through with this, is there light at the end of this horrid tunnel?

I am 19 years old and got my tonsils and got something done with my nose at the same time. Im on day 5 and the pain is getting better but I am not sure if my random stomach aches are from the scabs falling off or from me trying to eat food. This was the first day I was able to actually eat food like mac & cheese. Then I had the worst pain in my stomach and it was so bad and my mom said it was from the creamy ness of the cheese but now im not sure if it is from the scabs falling into my stomach. If this is how it is going to be with the scabs Im really scared because I do not know if I will be able to go through it.

absolutely disagree about dairy products, drs. recommend it becuz it coats and keep the tonsils moist and it feels heavenly to drink a shake.

My 6 yr old had her tonsils out 2 days ago and she gets severe headaches. She doesn't complain too much about her throat. Her doctor said dairy was okay after the first day, I try to stick with fat free though so her stomache doesn't get upset. They also told us no tomatoes, orange juice, anything with high acidity. They said basically anything else we can mash up she can have. She was eating mashed up mac and cheese, on day 2, we gave her chicken salad on a tortilla mashed in the blender, made her smoothies, homemade vanilla shakes with lots of fruit (I used fat free ice cream),  lots of popsicles and sherbert (nothing red though), gatorades, 100 fruit juices (white grape, apple). If the darn headaches woudl stop she would be pretty good. My one concern was they gave her a narcotic elixir with 3 refills, are you kidding me. This morning I gave her regualr liquid tylenol to see if that helps instead. The white spots are also normal.

I'm 23 and on day 5 of recovery.

It's bad :( My girlfriend and my family dont wanna come near me due to the smell from my mouth, which is also annoying to me thanks to this horrible taste all the time. I've been drinking about 2-3 litres of water everyday, and eating pretty normally. I actually had fish&chips on the night of the operation. Eating isn't too bad s long as you chew like hell and wash every mouthful down with water. However...CRISPS (chips for you americans) are the best - they go to a warm wet much in your mouth and slide on down, tis great. Was also told to chew chewing gum by the hospital to help ease jaw pain.

The worst thing by far, and something I wasn't told about is the uvula... omg could it be bigger? Everything I lie down it blocks my nose forcing me to breathe through my mouth then boom...9 hrs of sleep with your mouth open = a bone dry mouth and makes the first hours or so in the mornings absolute agony. Gooing to try and sleep with my head elevated tonight, see if that helps.

A piece of white stuff came off when brushing my teeth today, no bleeding and seems to have eased the swollen feeling thats there.

Taking paracetamol+ibuprofen every 4hrs or so. Pains not too bad, mornings are the worst.

Best advice is to eat normally, sleep elevated, and drink rediculous amounts of cold cold water. Just hope my uvula will go down eventually and I can breathe and talk normally :p

I posted this yesterday...that night at 10pm i got a bleed...the whole left side scabs fell off in a piece and i was bleeding for 2hrs straight. Went to the emergency room straight away of course and they tried to stop the bleeding with hyrodogen peroxide gargling but it didn't work. They called in the on call ENT surgeon and I had to go back to emergency theatre before I bled out :(

I lost nearly 3 pints of blood, half of which they had to suction out of my stomach!

I'm okay now and back home after a day in hospital again but i'm am serious when I say that was the scariest night of my life. Choking and drowning on my own blood. I don't mean to scare anyone but it can happen, I was one of those 1-2%. I'm told it was caused by a small local site infection which loosened the scab. I'm on more painkillers and a course of antibiotics and they say I should be fine and it won't happen again. Left me shaken and scared though. Everything was going great, little pain and eating nicely, I did nothing wrong, I was just unlucky... good luck to everyone

Omgosh that's so crazy. My boyfriend had his surgery on the 1st of Dec and he ended up going in for emergency surgery after having crazy bleeding too. They had to pump his stomach also. He hasn't had much pain since. Now I got mine out on last week wed, but I'm about to post about mine.

You weren't unlucky- you ate fish and chips-- you're not supposed to eat solids for the first two days of the surgery and that's why you bled out.

I wasn't able to eat until day 4. Now I've been eating mashed potatoes, pasta etc... the scabs in the back of my throat are already started to fall off I've been hacking them up since day 4. My jaw and tounge and uvulia are all still swollen and painful..can't wait to be compltly healed!!

I am a 19 year old female who just had my tonsills taken out 4 days ago. So far day 2 was the WORST day for pain. I woke up at 3 am vommitting and that made my throat even worse. Now as I go on to day 5 I am gradually getting better. I've been eating mashed potatos pasta yogurt and jello. Howver I wassnt able to start eating until day 4. I've also been drinking plenty of ice water it feels soothing on the throat. My jaw and tounge are what is bothing me the most now I've been putting an ice pack on my jaw and neck and that has helped a lot! The hardest thing is watching everone around me eat watever they want and not be in pain like me. When I'm able to eat normal again I'm definetly going to feast! Lol I've also started hacking up small pieces of scabs..totally gross! My breath also is so nasty but I found swishing mouth helps out a little with the foul taste in your mouth and the bad breath!

Listen ar1987 mabye you had nasuea and vomiting because you ate a hamburger after surgery.Your doctor should have informed you that         there is 2 days of just liquids and after that soft foods for a weak. And if you have to chew on it its not a soft food. How the f***k are you helping people keep your idiotic comments to yourself.

Hey, I'm also 19 and I'm on day 6. Mix a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water (just from the tap will do), take a mouthful and gargle for a bit, then spit it out & repeat.
This helps with keeping it clean, and any bits of scab or old food that come loose will be rinsed out :)

(This is for people who find the thread now, I guess it's not useful info to you personally anymore :P)

Hiya, i am 12 years old and i had my tonsils out 4 days ago. I had to stay in hospital for 3 days and 2 nights. When they sent me home they gave me  list of things on the days that i had to eat. The first day i was home, he said if i could eat something then the best thing would be yogurt. But i had to drink. That was a deffinet. The second day i could start to eat a little. I had to have crushed cookies and warm milk. Over cooked plain pasta, soup (chicken is best),fruit juice (pineapple is best because that is an antibiotic). Those foods went on for the 2nd 3rd and 4th day. On the 5th day i was able to have some meat ( chicken was the best thing to eat ).  I am having to go back to the hospital to have it checked. If you have white bits at the back of your throat , it is nothing to worry about.  I had it the first day i had my tonsils out but the doctor came in and checked on me and he said that it is nothing to worry about and shouldnt keep on looking in my mouth. Ice cream is good to eat and very cold drinks. Ice pops are better than ice cream because ice cream leaves your breath with a funny smell. Could anybody tell me if i am aloud to drink chocolate milkshakes? Thanks
