I'm 23 and on day 5 of recovery.
It's bad :( My girlfriend and my family dont wanna come near me due to the smell from my mouth, which is also annoying to me thanks to this horrible taste all the time. I've been drinking about 2-3 litres of water everyday, and eating pretty normally. I actually had fish&chips on the night of the operation. Eating isn't too bad s long as you chew like hell and wash every mouthful down with water. However...CRISPS (chips for you americans) are the best - they go to a warm wet much in your mouth and slide on down, tis great. Was also told to chew chewing gum by the hospital to help ease jaw pain.
The worst thing by far, and something I wasn't told about is the uvula... omg could it be bigger? Everything I lie down it blocks my nose forcing me to breathe through my mouth then boom...9 hrs of sleep with your mouth open = a bone dry mouth and makes the first hours or so in the mornings absolute agony. Gooing to try and sleep with my head elevated tonight, see if that helps.
A piece of white stuff came off when brushing my teeth today, no bleeding and seems to have eased the swollen feeling thats there.
Taking paracetamol+ibuprofen every 4hrs or so. Pains not too bad, mornings are the worst.
Best advice is to eat normally, sleep elevated, and drink rediculous amounts of cold cold water. Just hope my uvula will go down eventually and I can breathe and talk normally :p
I posted this yesterday...that night at 10pm i got a bleed...the whole left side scabs fell off in a piece and i was bleeding for 2hrs straight. Went to the emergency room straight away of course and they tried to stop the bleeding with hyrodogen peroxide gargling but it didn't work. They called in the on call ENT surgeon and I had to go back to emergency theatre before I bled out :(
I lost nearly 3 pints of blood, half of which they had to suction out of my stomach!
I'm okay now and back home after a day in hospital again but i'm am serious when I say that was the scariest night of my life. Choking and drowning on my own blood. I don't mean to scare anyone but it can happen, I was one of those 1-2%. I'm told it was caused by a small local site infection which loosened the scab. I'm on more painkillers and a course of antibiotics and they say I should be fine and it won't happen again. Left me shaken and scared though. Everything was going great, little pain and eating nicely, I did nothing wrong, I was just unlucky... good luck to everyone
Omgosh that's so crazy. My boyfriend had his surgery on the 1st of Dec and he ended up going in for emergency surgery after having crazy bleeding too. They had to pump his stomach also. He hasn't had much pain since. Now I got mine out on last week wed, but I'm about to post about mine.
You weren't unlucky- you ate fish and chips-- you're not supposed to eat solids for the first two days of the surgery and that's why you bled out.
Listen ar1987 mabye you had nasuea and vomiting because you ate a hamburger after surgery.Your doctor should have informed you that there is 2 days of just liquids and after that soft foods for a weak. And if you have to chew on it its not a soft food. How the f***k are you helping people keep your idiotic comments to yourself.
This helps with keeping it clean, and any bits of scab or old food that come loose will be rinsed out :)
(This is for people who find the thread now, I guess it's not useful info to you personally anymore :P)
Hiya, i am 12 years old and i had my tonsils out 4 days ago. I had to stay in hospital for 3 days and 2 nights. When they sent me home they gave me list of things on the days that i had to eat. The first day i was home, he said if i could eat something then the best thing would be yogurt. But i had to drink. That was a deffinet. The second day i could start to eat a little. I had to have crushed cookies and warm milk. Over cooked plain pasta, soup (chicken is best),fruit juice (pineapple is best because that is an antibiotic). Those foods went on for the 2nd 3rd and 4th day. On the 5th day i was able to have some meat ( chicken was the best thing to eat ). I am having to go back to the hospital to have it checked. If you have white bits at the back of your throat , it is nothing to worry about. I had it the first day i had my tonsils out but the doctor came in and checked on me and he said that it is nothing to worry about and shouldnt keep on looking in my mouth. Ice cream is good to eat and very cold drinks. Ice pops are better than ice cream because ice cream leaves your breath with a funny smell. Could anybody tell me if i am aloud to drink chocolate milkshakes? Thanks
